Gypsy Rose: Lowrider Legend | Historic Vechicle Association Documentary
Southern California has a long history of developing automotive subcultures and then exporting them to the rest of the world, but no niche is quite as flashy or culturally iconic as the lowrider. And no lowrider is as groundbreaking as the Gypsy Rose, a 1964 Chevrolet Impala created by Jesse Valadez while he as a member of the Imperials car club in East L.A. Extravagantly painted by local man Don Heckman in pink, with hundreds of ornate roses and perfect pinstripes, this third-iteration Gypsy Rose has been turning heads on every street it cruises for nearly five decades. In the 1970s, it featured in the opening of the sitcom “Chico and the Man,” and in 1980 it appeared on the cover of “Lowrider” magazine.
Early in 2017, Gypsy Rose was photographed and documented by the Historic Vehicle Association for inclusion on the National Historic Vehicle Register. Under this program, the story and images of the Gypsy Rose will become part of the permanent archives of the Library of Congress.

Beautiful car and a beautiful story. WOW! That got registered and recognized by the United States Government. I don’t hear that much about modified cars being that lucky. Its like having a museum piece of history.

MAGA actually means Made America Great Already- You guys are a very deserving of the recognition- Worldwide
I cried when his son said we took the procession down Whittier. Great story. Thank you Hagerty!
First Lowrider mag I got as a 13 year old had Gypsy Rose as the poster. I hung it up n was hooked. A little scrawny white kid from Wisconsin. My grandpa's last car he built was a 60 Impala.... he asked me what kind of wheels n I showed him the story on Gypsy Rose... next xmas he brought me in the shop n their was 4 Dayton boxes. He says open up one with a chuckle. Crazy how a car can inspire n move people from all different backgrounds n areas of the world. Love the story the pride the family n dedication these car clubs do n represent.
Not into low riders but this was a beautiful doc. That coffin was gorgeous.
Wish I could like this twice.
Never have liked the whole low rider thing but this was a very special piece. Very well done.
Shout out to Don Heckman, the Talented artist who did the Gypse rose artistry......There would have been no iconic roses in gypse rose without him!!!!!!

That's Strange. I thought it was WALT PREY was the one that painted it! Am I wrong?
Thanks for sharing this part of history. I always admired the craftsmanship and style of lowriders and the beautiful paintwork.
Much respect being in low riding myself taught by my own dad cruising down Whittier Blvd in the 70’s in his 59 Impala 2 door hardtop I am his oldest son and sitting in the swivel seats bar in the back lights on ceiling A track going hitting carshows I new of Gypsy Rose back then because my dad was from Imperals at one time this story makes me appreciate what our culture has done I love the brotherhood that is going on till this very day and the low riding continues in fact I just picked up a 1960 Chevy Impala 2 door hardtop and I can’t wait to create my own thoughts and imagination towards it
This was an amazing doc, beautifully shot and expressed. I never knew how much positive history was behind the Lowrider scene.
That is a legend I’ve seen it at numerous lowrider magazine shows it’s a beauty.
Hagerty! Tx so much for presenting Cars and their history in such great documentaries.. LoVe It!
I got chills watching this all the way through what a masterpiece.
Thanks for sharing this video
Great video!
Really glad I got to see the full story of the car that I was always hearing about and seeing pictures of. I knew it had significant lowrider history, but this documentary really opened my eyes as to how much of an impact the car and these folks had on the lifestyle and community. I was a big time lowrider for years, and still have a project 1950 Chevy waiting to make it's debut. We joined other local clubs and participated in toys for tots, community service, benefit carwashes for cancer centers, and family BBQ'S at the park. RiverSide C.C. Spokane, Wa.
A well deserved honor. Congratulations to everyone that was involved with the history of this beautiful Lowrider.
I wasn't expecting to cry like this over a 64 impala
thank you, that was a great video, keep up the good work. !
Very touching story of an awesome, historically important car & the people behind it.

"Steward of the Gypsy Rose", an absolutely perfect caption.
That car is truly a piece of art
Very Cool. Love the life guys. Mike
That guy's hood isn't latched. Whoops! 1:15
Gorgeously done car
What a beautiful story.
Excellent piece on a part of American history and a culture that unfortunately most people aren't aware of. One of the most beautiful customs ever built.
This is great I’m doing a essay about lowrider and this was really helpful.

Nice report. His casket also well done and respectful.
Good video.
Coming from the UK I loved this story and gypsyrose is stunning, I wish this scene would hit the UK
awesome
Thats amazing,the impact that car had
This is what Makes America Great
The city I was a teenager and my 20's had great cruising.Downtown first street San Jose all around Saint James Park it was cool baby.
Oh, and at 2:56 that sure looks like one of the cars that was in Corvette Summer. Should be an early 70's Riviera? Had custom lights and grill.
"Gypsy Rose"...part of my conscience for over four decades.
Great people from a good man
When I was little in the 70s me and my cousins would cruise Whittier w the cars they worked on. Now I build odd ball cars. Volvo 240s,and the like.
In the past I was not a fan of lowriders, I am now.
This video made me tear up and I'm a white Canadian!!!
V13 Was it the SS with the 409?
❗ which I watched by Tokyo auto show was impressed. I try a lowrider hard, too! KZread river-klowriderでした!
I wish I had my own lowrider
to be considered a lowrider does the car have to have hydraulics or can it be a lowrider if it has airbags and not hydraulics???
GET IN DOWN @9:15 ORIGINAL GYPSY ROSE WAS A 63 IMPALA!! 👍💯🔥🔥🔥😎 NICE RIDE!!
How come the 1960 Gypsy Rose isn't brought up just curious
Funny how Walt Prey, the guy that painted it, is not mentioned. 🙄
Is it me, or is the title misspelled?

An Imperials club without a single MOPAR?
@styldsteel1
6 жыл бұрын
We can't say that for sure. the video doesn't show if there is one or not. The video says one out of every 3 or 4? cars in LA were a lowrider, there had to be a MOPAR mixed in

Why didn’t they just rebuild the 2nd car after the gangbangers destroyed it?
@styldsteel1

Maybe they downplayed the amount of damage done to the original? I don't know..I'm just guessing.

You make it seem as if that's a bad thing? Unlike you, I think it speaks volumes to the car culture that connected different races to build such a beautiful piece of moving art.
@realmaindrianpace

Unlike you, I know that Hispanic is not a race.

Maindrian Pace - I never mentioned the word Hispanic in my comment. Not sure where you got that from.
@mini_worx

Yes, I understand that we are all part of the human race, so it was my mistake to use the word "Race" on my previous comment but I still question the original intent of criticizing the fact that people, from different ethnicities, came together to build such a beautiful car.
