Gypsy Horse Fair 1993 Stow

A mixed bag of travelling types meet at Stow on the Wold twice a year at the annual horse fairs.
This is a fantastic opportunity to rub shoulders with a community that for the most part lives outside that of settled folk.
Here is a mixture of ancient tradition, of a people at society's edge laced with dodgy dealers, opportunists and hangers on.

Old Bob Braddock used to own this fair ! Bartley Gorman God rest him, had a pitch here for 20 odd years, where he would skip rope and hit the bag, with a tape playing with Bob's voice saying "This is Bartley Gorman, The King of the Gypsies, He will accept any challenge from any Gypsy or Traveller man from England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales for £1000 a side winner takes all" Of course he didn't get an awful lot of takers ! He would offer any man £100 if they could last the distance in a 5 minute round in the ring they had rigged up there !
Who would have thought the 90's could be described as "the good old days" Nice to see very little or no rubbish. Not like now. They leave the place looking like open land fill. Sadly, the days of trading livestock and the related stuff seem to have gone. It's almost like a cheap, tacky market now with not many attending.

You know thers about 30000 gorges go who throw rubbish everywhere we help clean it up
He used to cold shoe cause he didn't have a furnace. He was horse drawn and shod everything like this.

You could clearly see the stem before the commencement of the 'trick', and the woman who had the feather lodged down her top aids the woman pulling it out by lowering her head to obscure the trick part ! Then of course, once the feather has been miraculously pulled out, the white dot which is the stem of the feather is no longer visible lol. In all intents and purposes it is just a gimmick intended to draw attention and interest to their stall, nothing more nothing less.

Travellers always seem to dress 20 years in the past. Like here they are all dressed like it's 1973 and now they all dress like it's the 90s.
