The main actress in this series was recently victim to this, when this series came out and she posted a picture of a historic Korean citizen that rebelled against the Japanese occupation of Korea on her social media account and there were calls by Japanese netizens to have her canceled because of that.

Simplified cheat sheet for non-Koreans to help better understand scenes during this kdrama: 1. As people said, the villains are based off of the real Unit 731, a secret biochemical warfare division of Imperial Japan who experimented on living human prisoners of war (basically the Asian version of Germany's Josef Mengele). 2. The time period is in the last year of WWII. Korea, then called Joseon, had been Japan's colony for 35 years. It would be liberated in August 1945 when Japan surrenders to the Allies. This drama takes place in spring of that year. 3. Seoul had multiple historic names throughout its existence. One of them, during this time period, was Gyeongseong (hence the title). 4. During occupation, all of the signs on the streets are written in Japanese. Besides the imperial Japanese army, Japanese merchants and their families have also taken up root within the city. That explains the ladies in kimono casually walking/shopping in the background shots. 5. I've never seen a kdrama before where so much non-Korean is spoken. Basically, Japanese characters speak in Japanese to other Japanese. Koreans speak Korean to Koreans. But oftentimes Japanese will also speak in Japanese to Koreans (expecting them to understand). The main Korean characters speak back to them in Japanese. Occasionally the Japanese will speak Korean to Koreans only because the Koreans can't understand their Japanese. 6. Josenjing is a Japanese slur for ethnic Korean people. 7. Many ethnic Korean men were forcibly drafted into the Japanese army. You'll know when a soldier is Korean by the way he is bullied and holds low status within his unit. 8. During occupation period Koreans had to adopt a Japanese name. That's why the Korean mistress of the Japanese police commisioner has both a Korean and Japanese name. 9. Two main Korean characters get off a train from China but they're not Chinese. Manchuria, China in the north was a popular region where Korean resistance fighters and others looking to escape Japanese persecution would flee to. You'll hear references to "the righteous army" which were Korean guerilla fighters of the times. 10. Finally, not all Koreans resisted their occupiers. Some willingly collaborated with them for political favors and economic advantage. One of the secondary characters is the son of such a collaborator.

한국인은 선량한 일본국민은 증오하지 않습니다. 다만 일본을 싫어하는 이유: 일본이 독일처럼만 인정하고 사죄해도 용서하고 싫어하지 않을 것입니다. 하지만 일본은 사과는 커녕 잘못을 인정하지도 않고 오히려 역사를 왜곡하고 영토까지 자기땅이라고 우기죠.

One day please checkout Mr Sunshine (similar to the gyeongseng creature in time period but different type of story), Twenty Five Twenty One (deep and layered story about letting go of your youth also excellent balance of comedy and deeply emotional moments) and Revenant (excellent thriller). They are all critically acclaimed and award winning. The main actress is so good. More people need to check these out! All of these dramas have great endings. The kdrama youre starting is also great, but please checkout the cult classics too.
