GWR 1st Class, is it any good? Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington

A little over a year I reviewed a GWR service from Penzance to Paddington - something broke and the only thing offered was a bottle of water on the 5 1/2 trip.
Today I am back on GWR trying out their 1st class product again on a Class 800 to see what differences have been made on a trip from Bristol Temple Meads to the capital - London Paddington.

OK Pal. Nice vid and a fair appraisal of this trip. Had my first experience of GWR a few days ago, I must say was thoroughly impressed with rolling stock. The Hitachi 800 fleet is wicked and cannot praise it enough, living in Sheffield and having been thrown all over the 4ft on a 45 year old HST to Bristol TM. I found the Hitachi stuff smooth, comfy, speedy and all round 100% better. Great stuff on your part keep em coming pal Regards IAN

Another great report, mate! The last time I was in BTM must have been in 1984, getting the 21.24 up back to Carlisle! A 45 from Btm to Birmingham (plus a couple of 37's banking over the Lickey incline) followed by an 86/0 back home! Also, the underpass to the far platforms at the time was very dark and dingy, and the toilets that were there were awful!

Hi mate, thanks for watching - always appreciate the support. I can only imagine what the underpass was like, they all were awful back in the day.

As you stated, First Class is ok on GWR, although what strangely confusing is you get the exact same seats on LNER Azuma's and with the Intercity 225 Sets operating to, a Leeds to London is 2 Hours and 16 Minutes, about the same as going from Bristol to London, but on GWR you don't get much in terms of catering offers as you do on LNER, where you get hot and cold refreshments, Alcohol after 12 o'clock. Personally I think the LNER first class service is better than GWR.

I took first class with GWR to Cotswolds last February when my trip coincided with Storm Eunice. Because of many cancellations that day and the chaotic crowds, I bit the bullet and paid the high price just so that I get better chance of entering the train and to be able to sit. Luckily,my gamble paid off. The seats however were lacklustre, the only consolation is that I can get a solo seat and use the recline function. During normal times though, I wouldn't even think of 1st class unless the price difference for an upgrade is less than £10. Just not worth it.

I'm about to do Newport to Paddington tomorrow with my mother as a birthday gift to her (we're going to spend two nights in London and go to the theatre). I've got standard tickets, which cost £25.60 each way per person, but I'm using Seatfrig to see if I can get a cheap upgrade for the trip. I mean if we don't, it's already an uograde from when we went to London last year, where we only stayed one night and had a coach from Cardiff to Victoria and back. The coach journey took twice as long and the train from Cardiff to home is about as long as the bus from Newport to home, so we've got a better journey regardless this time. Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Louise, thank you for watching. Enjoy your trip and good luck with the upgrade, I use Seatfrog as much as I can.

@@TheGeordieTravels It was a good trip, but we missed out on the upgrade. However, the journey was still pleasant in standard class. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for watching. The air con was a saviour - the temperature breached 34 degrees that day and it was a welcome break. London though, was worse.

To me it seems that the service levels have gone down over the years but then again compared with say the West Or East Coast lines it is a short trip. On the stock I understand the pragmatic approach in using a hybrid, I just wonder what long term reliability will be. The big downsides of hybrids are of course complexity and weight.

I love first class travel, but only if the value is there. The value for this ride is appalling. But thinking about it, which operator actually has decent first class value in the UK these days?

Hi mate, thanks for watching - appreciated. I think the best first class is offered by LNER if you can grab their ‘Dine’ menu, hot breakfasts amongst others items and Avanti West Coast also offer hot foot on their services although prices are quite high.

First Class on GWR is poor in comparison with LNER. Service is variable and the food offer meagre. GWR management should buy season tickets on LNER and learn how things should be done.

Hi thanks for watching - you’re right, I had a para to add but forgot 😣 along the lines of GWR could have a good product but no where near as good as LNER’s dine menu or Avanti West Coasts product.

I can find NO evidence[ive looked on their website and asked] of complimentary alchohol on their services in First class after 5pm-------so your claim is a mystery.
