GWM Tank 300 Hybrid 2023 review: China's new petrol-electric 4WD off-roader takes on Jeep Wrangler!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Emerging Chinese brand GWM continues to make waves, this time with its new Tank sub-brand of 4x4s. The first to launch in Australia is the 2023 GWM Tank 300 mid-size SUV, which has the Jeep Wrangler firmly in its sights.
But unlike its American rival, the Tank 300 has a trick up its sleeve: a self-charging full hybrid powertrain. With a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, it produces a combined 258kW of power and 615Nm of torque. In this segment, those are formidable outputs.
That said, the boxy-looking Tank 300 still comes with a proper ladder-frame chassis, a low-range transfer case and a locking rear differential. So, it means serious business off the beaten track.
Speaking of which, in this expert review, experienced Contributing Journalist Dave Morley takes the Tank 300 off-road at its Australian media launch, to see if it has what it takes to elevate the GWM brand to the next level.

some americans says tank300 is a copycat of bronco....... but comparing ford bronco sport which is manufactured earlier, it's doesnt looks like tank300 or vice versa, bronco sport launched at 2020 oct, while tank300 launched at 2020 dec, ford bronco launched 2021 july which the face is really looks like tank300, so who is copying who? what do u think?

IT CHECKS TYRE PRESSURES AND JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING AUTOMATICALLY, ALL CONTROLLED FROM THE LARGE SCREEN ON THE DASH. JUST LOVE IT.

He just told you that you can drive this car on pure EV and regenerative braking will extend its range. This is comically wrong. It’s an HEV, like a Prius, the battery will move you round a car park and give you a torque boost under acceleration but that’s it.

@@Harrychambers1 Yep, I had to chuckle at that. He was reading directly from the CCP script, required or else no invitation to the "test". Absolutely the regen will not add to the range, any more than charging the battery with the alternator while the engine is running. And for what it's worth, the electric boost won't last long while you're climbing Billy Goat's Bluff either.

  • @Harrychambers1

@@Harrychambers1 Flat running and short hills maybe, but Billy Goats is a 7-800 metre steep ascent so I very much doubt the alternator can keep torque boost going or that long. It would be petrol only, so I guess that's why they still put low range in it. But anyway I'll keep my GU Patrol rather than dropping $70k on a Chinese anything :)

Not likely to see too many towing or travelling thru the outback. Hybrid petrols aren't exactly renowned for efficiency in heavy off road work or towing conditions. You 'might' get around the 9-10l/100km on the hwy but you Won't if you've got extra weight behind you in the way of a van or trying to negotiate the Simpson if you're crazy enough to tackle it in one of these, plus good luck trying to find supplies of petrol in more remote areas. The vehicle might look capable, but its only really suited to a little more rugged fire trails rather than a full outback expedition. There are currently no certified aftermarket parts in the way of suspension, bull bars , snorkels etc , though that probably will eventually be catered for. I wouldn't be taking it thru any water that's no more than a few mm over a causeway crossing. Hybrid drive trains getting soaked sometimes don't seem to end well.

They are selling crazy in China so at least in 3 yrs reliability is holding up. Look, today, companies hire designers engieers from all over. This is probably desgined by an italian, hybrid engine from a tesla shanghai engineer lured by 1M salary, and offroad from you guess it, Indian's Range Rover. Correction, designed by a Jeep engineer no way Italian.

You certainly won't need a snorkel for a 600ml wading depth or beyond in this vehicle. The air intake on a snorkel would be at a height that no normal engine would operate without serious water incursion into the vehicles' electrical and mechanical components. Snorkels are an absolute gimmick unless installed on a totally modified fit for purpose vehicle.

  • @jerrymyahzcat

Personally I disagree about the first thing you do is put a snorkel on it. 1) In all but the most extreme conditions (driving through water deeper than the manufacturer’s stated wading depth) you don’t need a snorkel or RAI and it does Nothing. 2) If you do intend on driving through water deeper than the manufacturer’s stated wading depth, there’s a whole many more issues you face such as will it float and would you have to flood the cabin to drive deeper (my vehicle is water tight and floats if you try to drive too deep) and there’s all sorts of other waterproofing especially with the electrics of a petrol or petrol/hybrid that you’d have to deal with to make it safe? A very expensive undertaking. 3) RAIs and Snorkels for 99% of people in 99% of use cases are a joke and a waste of time and money. They just create more drag and thus noise and fuel consumption without any meaningful advantage. And No, you don’t really get any better air quality intake at the high level. And in the few cases you might, slightly, the extra drag the air has as it travels through the intake pipes (look up fluid dynamics) isn’t worth it.

This is the 3rd Australian review I've watched on this car, and no-one has mentioned the payload! Seems to be a critical point. And from my readings it is a pathetic 394 Kg. That's ~80Kg worse than a Jeep Wrangler which has has a pretty hopeless payload of 470Kg.

All the positive comments for a review where the reporter tells you that a HEV with a 1.8 kWh battery can extend its range through regenerative braking? This reviewer is a clown. Cars Guide fired Matt Campbell and he’s now got his own KZread channel where you see a proper review of this car. They seem to have replaced him with Grizzly Adams.

I'm very happy that this GWM/Lada look-a-like, will increase competition so that Toyota can be pushed to do even better. (Toyota still have a lot of room for improvement on many levels) The true test of success of ANY car is always in the resale. Conclusion: talk to me in 10 years about this model Lada...oops... GWM

Hate the stolen Mercedes dash vents, made more gauche by a factor of 4 or 500%. The rest looks OK. No comment about the lack of all terrain tyres on an off-roader.
