Gwilym Lee, Joe Mazzello & Allen Leech Talk "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Ойын-сауық

"Bohemian Rhapsody" traces the meteoric rise of Queen through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. Actors Gwilym Lee, Joe Mazzello & Allen Leech discussed the film.

First off, I just want to pay a compliment to the gal conducting this interview. She did an excellent job! A good mix of humor and serious, and she asked good questions and then QUIETLY zipped it, letting the actors speak. How refreshing! I hate when interviewers make it about themselves and interrupt the guest. Nice job! Regarding what Allen said about finding the humanity in playing a character like Paul Prenter, the line in the script that gives insight into that for me is when he shouts to Freddie, "I didn't mean it." Wow, as much as I was so angry at him for blocking Freddie from the people who had his best interest in mind, I must say, when Allen Leech spoke that line, I pitied Prenter. What a great scene... so well-written and so beautifully performed! The other line that he played great was when he chimed in about how "MacArthur's Park" was 7 minutes long. The way he said that line was so multi-faceted and clever. Seeing an opportunity to champion Freddie's song... slightly sycophantic, slightly schoolboy crush AND very music biz savvy and astute!

I agree. There's also another subtle moment that stuck with me. When Freddie is saying how all of them have families and he doesn't, Deaky answers "you have 4 million dollars. Perhaps you could buy yourself a family". Allen played Paul making a face so clearly meaning "if you just knew what it's like" that was heartbreaking

I mean, that dirt was still part of the life and career surrounding the band, is it not? I certainly don't want a film that paints any of them in mostly or purely a negative light, but being true to history and rounding out a person by showing their good and bad side isn't necessarily, "wanting dirt." I do love BohRap, but it is a bit romanticized through a certain lens that doesn't do justice to fascinating historic events (or the timeline, given how squished it is). You are right though; it is a film celebrating the band, the music, and the four people at the top of it all and we deserved a film like that. The actual music performance sections were my favorites.

It's weird that critics think that the movie tip-toed around Freddie's sexuality. What movie did they watch? It was very clear, at least to me. I remember watching Live Aid when it was on telly, and the concert was kind of boring, until Queen came on, and then wow. I became a fan that day and have remained one ever since. The movie handled everything just fine. Yes, they do take some huge leaps in creative licence, but it all made the movie that much more entertaining, so I can see why they did it.

Screw the critics this movie is as timeless as the band itself... if they can’t suspend their disbelief and enjoy it for what it is then I feel sorry for them this movie isn’t a documentary just as the cast and crew keep saying it’s a celebration and ultimate tribute to Freddie and Queen. As a note for note fan, I would have loved to see their fights (which were many) dramatized. I always wanted to see what the dynamic of that was. There is ONE video sequence where you see the other three banding against Brian during recording of A Kind of Magic. Then they go behind closed doors to argue so you can't see it! Freddie took most of the heat for being a diva - and he was and he caused a lot of issues - but they all had egos - even John. Brian probably was snippiest out of all of them. But damn, if didn't want ot know more about their arguing. Freddie used to say - and it's in the movie - that their fighting was what propelled him to solve issues. He needed that creative tension. There's an interview where Roger talks about "some thought they were too important to be in the group." Then another where Freddie talks about the fact that none of them could leave, "because if you leave, it's like being a coward." Interesting ironies: Freddie had buck teeth, and Roger was a dentist. Paul Prenter died of aids before Freddie, but was NOT the one who infected him. Peter Freestone tells who that most likely was in his book. He and Freddie figured it out together, and it seemed to be accidental - the guy didnt know at the time - which was more prevelant back then. Fuck. I could go on foreever. I Met Brian in 87 at the fan club. He came out in his socks after a business meeting and it was just me and him on the doorstep. The ONLY time in my life someone "took my breath away." Four years later, I hope lightening would strike twice, so I went back to the club to see if any of the other members might be there. No, but Jackie Gunn, their secretary let me come in and hang out. I was sitting in the fucking office with all of there gold and platinum records!!!!!!! I asked her about Freddie's health. She said it was just a bunch of bad pix from parties. Three months later, he died. I cried my eyes out and did again during the sequence where his dr tells him in he movie.

Great interview. Loved how they got to talk as long as they wanted/needed about each question without being rushed or cut off. And they perfectly explained/described exactly what I've been feeling about the content of the film. That everything is there, the drugs, the relationships, the crazy parties, you know what it all means and you don't need it to be explicit or overly dark and depressing. They wanted a film to ultimately bring joy to the audiences and fans even though there was a very tragic outcome. I'm not sure why it's so hard for some to understand that and I think people are just so desensitized these days nothing gets through to them unless it's graphic. All I can say it I love what that band and these actors and everyone have done with this film. It made me laugh and cry. I only want to see more of these guys as the band members. They're incredible.

I have never watched the same movie or read the same book twice except on one or two occasions and many many years later. I saw this twice and now want to go and see it again. You can absolutely feel these people were not just playing the characters, they were Queen. They put their solid into this. Incredibly impressed that they took on the biggest event ever and up close and personal too. It blew my mind relight from the start and I am not usually at all happy to see people playing my fave bands. They were outstanding. Rami to me was the only one that looked and sounded nothing like his character so I am not sure why he was chosen however he totally put his heart and soul into his performance and almost made you forget this.

What i can take away from this is that critics don't speak for everyone. I've seen movies where the critics have a movie 5 stars and after seeing the movie I asked my friend "What was THAT all about?" His answer was " About an hour and a half too long!" That is when I lost faith in critics. Bohemian Rhapsody was a confirmation that critics can't always be right, that recording executives are out of touch with the people and that Bohemian Rhapsody defies the critics and speaks for the people. One of the best films I have ever seen. Emotionally moving and musically entertaining and characters engaging. Loved it!!

The Build Series interviews that I've seen are intelligent and well-conducted, and I'm glad Gwilym, Joe, and Allen were given this opportunity to talk about their roles in BR. I also appreciated the final question from the audience to Allen and Joe about how they transition from a well-known role to something brand new. I didn't even realize Allen Leech was portraying Paul Prenter until the credits rolled, and his performance is an excellent example to how an actor should immerse himself in a character. I knew Joe Mazzello as the kid from Jurassic Park and Radio Flyer, but I was unfamiliar with his adult roles until I binge-watched The Pacific (the companion series to Band of Brothers) and was blown away. Joe Mazzello's performance in The Pacific is absolutely brilliant, must-watch viewing.

Another interview of Joe being called John. This is the third time for me to see it. Hope somebody makes a compilation of it. 🤣🤣🤣. More⬇ Something that I learn from this interview is that part when Allan Leech said that there were so many happy accidents that happened in the journey of Queen that when those were slightly different, you'll not have the Queen that we have today. Like that accident that John Deacon didn't plan to make his talent on playing bass to be his career, it was just for fun but then he ended up being part and the perfect bassist of Queen. 🥰
