GUYANA: KARASABAI

It has long been said that using a spell called “bena” the indigenous peoples can trap a man or a woman or accomplish other purposes. In this second episode of the series called GUYANA, the News Room’s Neil Marks travels to Karasabai in the South Pakaraimas to investigate this mysterious practice and is shown a mountain called Bena, where it is said you can find all the herbs used in the practice. Why, Karasabai itself is steeped in mystery! The village is named for a rock resembling a treasure chest; the story is that the chest was magically transformed into stone by Macunaima, a legendary spirit of the indigenous people. Later, we travel up the Ireng River on the border with Brazil to find the sun parakeets, an endangered species of parrots only found in this part of the world. The people of Karasabai are fiercely protective of them sun parakeets, keeping them safe from poachers.

Karasabai Village is beautiful. People should visit this place and ride a donkey for fun and promote awareness. I went there in 1980 and enjoyed every minute of my visit. Its more updated now and will be back soon.

I thought the people down in Southern Guyana would have a different accent due to the influence of their mother tongue and isolation, but they sound like any other Guyanese. My Mum is from East Coast Demerara and the accent is very similar.

Better Roads & Communications 'will' bring External Forces - not necessarily Compatible. It is a Balancing Act which demands a Collective effort to Preserve Culture or they will be Over-run. The Fruit resembling Ginnip, I believe I saw in Borneo called 'Crystal', one of the most Beautiful Tasting Fruit I ever ate on 4 Continents. Skin is Thicker than Ginnip with Firm Clear/White Flesh with one seed, I was shown to Slam the fruit on a flat surface to Break the flexible but Firm skin. If it is the same, it is worth Farming, they said it came from S America originally.
