The cactus variety is called Cholla (pronounced choy’-ya). They are beautiful and appear almost delicate. They are quite common in the Arizona desert where I first encountered them with much the same result. It is often referred to as a Jumping Cholla.

Within that, I found a similar looking Teddy Bear cactus variety. That page mentions the reproductive process. The answer seems to be yes, if I understood it correctly. There is also a linked reference to Jumping Chollas.

I learned a new word today :)

As kids, my older brother and I were playing around, chopping up large cacti with axes on our property, he swung and chopped off a foot off the top and it flew and impaled straight into my thigh and stuck to it. It took all night of my family pulling the needles out of my leg. The burning and pain was unbelievable
