Gutted: Fighting for Survival in Europe's Fishing Crisis

What are the consequences for a small community when the white fish industry collapses? This poignant film tells the human tales of fishermen and their families.
Fishing is one of Britain's oldest industries, and Fraserburgh is a community significantly dependent on it. This documentary charts the community's reaction to swingeing quota cuts and consequent drastic reduction in the industry. Filming at sea is extensive, and includes a trip to a breakers yard in Denmark and to the EC in Brussels.

This is an old documentary. I would love to know how these men and their families are doing now. My hearts go out to them all. The wives did a wonderful job. I hate to see that generations got destroyed. These families have my total respect. This was a very good documentary although very sad. They should do another one of where they are now. God Bless these families and all that are struggling now financially, physically and mentally.

As much as i feel we in some ways need to better stewards of our seas and what we remove from them and we should never put into them things at could be harmful; i also really do hope that for those who have lost so much more than the rest of us kknow (the fishermen, the families, the communities, and the industries who touch or are touched) will be hearing from those who never have even touched the seashores on knees begging the fishermen to come back. I hope the fishermen are needed so badly that boats, gear, complete set up will be the sign on bonus for them at zero cost to return to the seas. If you want people to govern ovef an industry...they should have a minimum of 10 years experience in that industry.

To all of you who show no empathy to the fishing families and the local industry who lost their small businesses: Just imagine if you had your livelihood stripped away from you without fair compensation for everything you had invested in it, and had neither help nor an idea how to start anew! As to fish farming: Can you farm cod, herring, or other whitefish, and if, how? To the vegans: I am not a vegan, but have many friends who are. However, I respect their decision and they respect mine. I personally believe that all who believe that their lifestyle or philosophy should be forced upon everyone else are dangerous. I also believe that all creatures should be respected, and if they are killed it should be for consumption only and that the rules regarding the preservation of a particular species, endangered or not, should be obeyed.

There are a lot of reasonable arguments contained in this documrntary. Many cities and towns all over nation and the world are dependent on certain industries. London is the financial city of the nation, it could be steel ot car manufacturing in others. Many industries face hardship when that soure ofn income is effected by curcumstance as in the case of Frazerborough and the EU policies on their industries. However, I do feel that greed plays a terrible part of fish stocks becoming depleated due to over fishing. I accept the EU rules and the CFP is grossly not to the advantage of many British interests and the communities it affects, however, over fishing in general is to blame in the end. Maybe it's time to learn another skill or trade as hard and as unjusrt and as hard to accept that may be.

Isn't that the way of the World. The big guy is so big, the little guy can't touch him, but the big guys never happy, they want it all. How can the little guy stand a chance against the big guy. Then the fisherman are given just enough that the bank gets there's and the fishman zero, but whenever the banks go under, they get a full bail out. Funny how that works.

First, they came for the dockers in the '70s and 80;s the car makers, rail workers, shipbuilders, miners, and steel workers. Then the fishermen in 85 and then the farmers with BSE, Then it was the farmer's turn again with the foot and mouth outbreak in the '90s and then back to the northern fishermen and now they are coming again for the farmers with the tail of global warming and nitrogen pollution. The farmers need nitrogen to grow their crops. They are completely running the UK into the grown, we are no longer able to feed ourselves and this is by design as it's happening all over the EU and the rest of the world. It is fuckin sickening and nobody can see it happening, global warming is not a threat, the threat is the people in command of the ship and their agenda to mass euthanise the masses.

I have sympathy for them but the fact of the matter is they are beating a dead horse, overfishing has caused so much problem in the seas world wide, so many species are endangered and underpopulated, you can't possibly be mad when we all knew this would be the outcome of fisheries when you overfish to meet quota for more money. The reality wether its British borders, Italian borders etc, everyone is gonna need a new way to make income because the fish populations won't last another 20 years if this keeps up

Alicia Marie but the problem is that they are doing this to the other EU countries, in fact they are giving them more ground to fish in and quotas and grants to build ships...they are deliberately destroying the UK ' fishing industry in order to protect other countries fishing industries....if over fishing is truly a problem then why then is fish not more expensive to buy or a harder to get? It's not because it truly isn't a problem especially with so few now fishing and the amount they can fish and how often getting less and less each year.

Quipplelop7788 I'm not joking. Fish feel pain. Why inflict pain on a fellow being just for the temporary relief of hunger? Ever notice how fish flees when you approach them? Fish fear death. Why not grant fish the same autonomous liberty we humans each expect to be granted? Leave the fish alone.
