@D Moll Mmhmm. I get the feeling a lot of people didn't really read between the lines of what Guts does. He's not really the Doomguy/Doom Slayer archetype where he just slaughters demons. If that was the case, I guarantee you the God Hand and Femto would be a non-factor. Narratively, he's a struggler. He just so happens to be better at it than most in his verse.

Also to anyone confused as to why Nightmare's Soul Wave didn't kill Guts immediately by devouring his soul and haven't read Berserk. I should tell you that those who have read Berserk will know the rather terrifying reason why; Griffith, upon becoming Femto, claimed ownership of Guts' soul with the Brand of Sacrifice, so Griffith owns Guts' soul, and nobody else can take it or sacrifice it in any sort of way. Meaning that Griffith was one of the major factors in why Guts didn't die.

I think that's what makes Guts such an awesome character for me (even if I'm only on part 136 of the manga). He doesn't care who or what's in front of him. He just fights and struggles through it.

Guts does not hate the weak. Saying that he does betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.

@@bigmyke2008 Guts says that he hates Vargas in that arc because Vargas had his life ruined by an apostle, and Guts is disgusted with him because he sees his own failure to overcome the supernatural. You can see this when he reflects on his own metal arm while remembering Vargas' story. Guts does not hate the weak, he just hates the things that have been done to him and reframes them as weakness so that he can overcome them with strength. If you want to see someone who steps on the weak, look at Griffith.

Focusing on the nature of the characters and not their stats creates inaccurate results. Otherwise I guess Master Chief can beat Guts because his narrative is that his luck allows him to overcome the odds not matter how unfairly stacked against him they are.

4 months late but that’s mostly how using fighting game sprites can harm immersion, as they just flip the character the other way. I’d he was facing to the right of the screen he’d look perfectly normal. I don’t remember who it is but there’s a street fighter character with one arm that seemingly switches depending on which way he turns.

It's been going since 1989 and is still being made (albeit slowly) by one guy; Miura. I dunno where you're getting that the anime producer is basing Griffith from the anime on anything other than the manga. I don't think a sentence sums up Berserk more perfectly than that. It didn't hold back any punches, just like life.

This might be my favorite death battle ever. Watching this really brings back nostalgia for me, back when I first discovered death battles and started watching them all the time. Not to mention this is the whole reason I started reading berserk.

Funnily enough though “He’s just built different” works for Guts. Because of the brand on him, he’s constantly partially in the spirit world where thoughts can affect reality. In the case of Guts, simply thinking he’s strong can give him a combat boost.

Guts was literally destined for a life of torment. Sure he did find happiness in the form of the Hawks but look what happened to them. Gintoki Atleast found happiness and is content with it.

@@nameless0510 just the history behind why he was named guts already points to how more messed up guts backstory was. He basically fell out of his mothers corpse and was found by mercineries who taught him basically to fight till death, besides the early times of the band of the hawk, his life is largely downhill from the start.

Usama Zahid Kratos also has the Blade of Olympus. Maybe he could use that to combat Guts' Dragonslayer if any of his Blades of Chaos, Athena, or Exile seem to prove futile against that iron-slabbed sword

Awesome as Guts is, I’ve always wondered how exactly he manages to carry around a sword twice his weight (230 pounds with the sword at over 400), let alone swing it with such strength in the first place?

It's heavily implied that the eclipse changed him, multiple characters bring up his unusual aura and his strength seen as impossible even in his own setting. Keep in mind he isn't just swinging that thing around, he's extremely skilled and can swing it so fast that others literally can't perceive his movements. He even lifted the thing with his teeth. I even suspect he wouldn't have been able to use the Dragonslayer before the eclipse, my theory is that while Guts is still human, his willpower makes reality bend slightly around him, tweaking things like physics and probability slightly in his favour.

@@dreadknight-zi1gq not a demon exactly, the Skull Knight tells him he exists in the interstice, which is like the space between the physical and astral worlds. It changed or possibly corrupted his spiritual essence and is probably why he can survive blatantly impossible injuries and perform superhuman feats.

Doom slayer vs guts

It's an extremely Guts move to headbutt an armoured, helmeted and horned opponent just to get him to stop monologuing.

I was thinking what they said the entire time. “Guts has to fight beings like this every day” should be another dub haha Rest in peace Kentaro, we miss you.

It's funny because Guts really didn't even need his berserker armor in this fight, Screw Attack just needed to show it at least once.

Actually, it said that it bought him plenty of time. That’s not saying he needed it. The berserker armor is made to hold the body together when in severe condition. Meanwhile, you already see Guts leap through fire earlier in the fight. A couple seconds of being on fire does not change anything about the outcome.

@@gigaguy200 but it could technically make the fight longer as fire is pretty distracting and Guts could´ve missed the final blow. Because Fire that is basically in youzr eye prevents you from seeing stuff. Trust me, I would know.

I think my favorite part is that Dragonslayer isn't a sharp blade. It's completely dull. It just tears things apart due to its sheer weight and might.

At the start of this they said the true measure of someone’s badassery is sword size. Well Nightmare’s blade is 6’1”, and gut’s is 6’6”. So it was clear from the start

Guts is one of those characters that I can’t help but feel awful for despite not existing. And I don’t even know the guy. His strength is earned, but he didn’t deserve to earn it the way he had to struggle for.

This video introduce me into Berserk and the creator, Kentaro Miura. Later, I learned others like Hidetaka Miyazaki were heavily influence by his work. Without Kentaro Miura, we wouldn't have Dark Souls, etc. He was 54 and this is heartbreaking. Kentaro Miura is a man of legend and he'll be missed.

I love the use of "Forces" when describing Dragonslayer. so badass and appropriate.

Somehow the funniest part of Guts no selling Nightmare was the fact that Inferno was represented here with Cinder sprites lol

So Guts has “unstoppable will power”... so if he had a green lantern ring he would basically rule the universe with and iron fist.

And since I’m 20 right now, it’s leaning towards the latter option. Right now it’s at volume 41, so it might get into the 50s or 60s

@@sirisgunplabuildsandmanga9240 I don't know if I am correct, but I think Miura(author of berserk), has the ending somewhat thought up and has it on stand by if something were to happen. I know how you feel though. If something were to happen to him and we weren't able to get the proper ending for berserk I would be pretty depressed.

This death battle is what helped me discover Berserk, and man I couldn’t thank the guys who made it enough. Berserk means so much to me now it’s crazy.

Thank you death battle for helping to convince me when I was younger to read the manga berserk. I had already Watch the 1997 anime but this video is just the tiniest little bit more that convinced me to find a way to read berserk. It was one of the greatest decisions I will ever make in my life, thank you death battle and thank you can Kentaro Miura. Hope to see you in the next life!
