Gut check on the French Broad River: Section 9

It's been a minute since I've gotten Betty (my blue LL Flying Squirrel) out on the water but there's no time like the present to get back in the saddle. I was in for quite a ride today on French Broad section 9 though. Turns out it actually takes practice to be good at something....who woulda thunk it?? It certainly wasn't my best day but maybe it's the day I needed to learn a little bit about myself. Always good times!

    Amazing footage of these unfortunate events. Fantastic guys to help out especially the one that you never met. Great attitude that this is all an opportunity to learn lessons. They Kayaking community sounds much like the hiking community. You stuck with it and that is awesome.

    There are definitely parallels between the hiking and kayaking communities. There are just so many good people out there! Thanks for watching!

    Great video. I fear many similar days in my future as I just purchased my first hard shell kayak, Dagger Katana, and I'm certain the mistakes I've gotten away with in my Sea Eagle Explorer will not be tolerated and I'll be swimming too!

    The Katana is a GREAT boat! When I got in mine for the first time, I couldn't help but think "how am I supposed to go straight in this thing?" Swimming is all part of the experience 😎Enjoy!

    So I watched this after trying to run a local run at higher water levels and paddled well until the crux rapid of the run where I got absolutely destroyed. I took the weekend off to collect and hit it again this coming weekend. Thanks for posting this. I definitely was questioning if I should be out on the river myself.

    Right on! The way I look at it, anyone can get beaten up by the river. The only way to get better is to keep getting back in the boat even after you take one to the chin. It's certainly something that's easier said than done and I wrestle with it every time I paddle. Thanks for watching and hope you OWN round 2!

    Rough day, but we've all had them. Ran this stretch for the first time during WOR this year, and really enjoyed it. Hope to get back on it sometime in the future. Thank you for showing your mishaps. So many people edit those out, and I believe that is wrong. We are all between swims, and the time between mine is probably less than most who have been paddling for over 3 years, but I truly enjoy paddling whitewater. Maybe I'll catch you on the water one of these days. Great video.

    I'm right there with ya Brad. I think only showing the "good" days paints an inaccurate picture of our progression and could lead to some false expectations for those trying to get into it. I also have short breaks between swims but even with my limited experience, I've felt myself become a much more aware and potentially safer paddler on all rivers, not just whitewater. Hope to see you on the river and thanks for watching!

    Clever name. I've never done whitewater very much, just not a lot of opportunity to do it, however I have certainly had ays that I got paddled, instead of the river.

    @@SideTrailAdventures Thanks! Probably be working on the video tonight…trying to decide on making one longer (20-30 minute) video or a couple of shorter videos. I find myself suffering from ADHD and struggling to watch longer videos. What are your thoughts?

  • @SideTrailAdventures

    @SideTrailAdventures

    @@mountainsmoore3657 the short answer is...it depends. I've done videos from 1 minute to 1 hour. If your story makes sense to break up into smaller chunks I'd say go for it. At the end of the day, YOU have to enjoy your videos. I make videos that suit me, not someone else, and I've never been disappointed. Regardless, you'll always get a thumbs up from me my friend! 👍😎

    As P5 said at the end of the run...I need to work on "everything that's important"...kids and their honesty😂.. I've got some flat water practice on the docket to build in some better bracing...and obviously some roll practice. Little bit at a time. Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching!
