Gurkhas - Part 1/2 (HD)

Gurkhas have been part of the British Army for almost 200 years, but who are these fearsome Nepalese fighters?
Part 2: • Gurkhas - Part 2/2 (HD)

I'm a US Army veteran and had the pleasure of meeting a company of Gurkha, wow, what tough little warriors They humped ruck all over that mountain at a pace that we just couldn't match. I'd love to have a few pints with them out of respect.

My dad taught me about the Gurkhas when I was a young kid in America. He said they were the most capable soldiers in the world. I knew I would never have the ability to join since I'm not British or Nepalese, so I joined the US Marines. It's the closest I could get :-) Much respect to these guys!

Krize Bhattarai You're mental, right? I mean, I've got serious issues with their pay and benefits, but why the immediate, laughable jump to "slavery?" Have you the slightest clue about these lads in their home country? Have you seen the abject poverty they live in? The total lack of opportunity? These boys want to be Gurkhas from the time they can walk, because they're natural warriors. It's in their blood, and it gives them more purpose than a soft, complacent type like yourself could ever hope for. They would laugh in your silly little face for spitting that nonsense around them.

They used to get less pay while outside of the UK and while in the UK they got extra money for higher cost of living etc, now they get the same pay as a british soldier, and when you think that 1 months pay in britain is prob over 1 year in their own country, they are pretty rich when they go back home. So i'll call that respect.

Gurkha were hired because of bravery. Not just the warrior that fight in war. There civilian will fight to death. In a village of 600 British East India company declared war with 4000 plus men armed with rifle and canon they charged. The village used gorilla tactic and wan killing 1000 plus and injuring many. Village made up of children adult and elderly that were of 600 wan with stone. Stick. Arows and kukari. Against a might that was far advanced in military weapons. a reason they are hired for over 200 years by britan. There is a saying that Germany even tried Nepal to be on there side in ww2 mainly because of there previous encounter in ww1. As Nepal was a independent Kingdome and not part of Commonwealth. They still joined Britian. Loyal they truly are

I heard a song sung in villages as follows: GAI TA PALEY BANAIKO BAGALAI XORA PALEY ANGREJI RAJALAI It is sad for the Gorkhas loosing substantial part of their own country to the British that were uniting Indian states together. Having lost their land/home Nepal continues to lose her sons for little necessities in life. Hope some day they get what is their legitimate, rather than mere respects which lacks seriousness.

Parachute story is aprocryphal, and mistold, at that. The original tale, from several sources (still aprocryphal) is that the debate was about what height they would leap from the airplane, they tried to talk them down to 100 meters, the officer suggested that was not high enough for the parachutes to deploy... Gurkhas, then realizing there were parachutes involved, volunteered en masse.

I would like to say that the British Gurkha are the most loyal, dedicated, humorous and deadly soldier in the world. I am British. Ask an American soldier who's served with one.....they'll tell you

At least - Hong Kong hasn't been a British colony since 1997, and they appear to be carrying SA80s in the video, which were introduced in 1985, so the video must be from that timeframe.

Best soldiers on the planet, ironically, they work for another country, lol. They are just perfect soldiers: smart in the battlefield, can withstand a lot of stress both physical and mental, and most important... naive and poor enough for not realizing that they are willing to die for a country that isn't theirs and more likely than not pays them shit. I give an standing ovation to the cheeky, astute British.

Bass, check my comment above. Yes we were very astute back in the 1800's to get them on board, but now they love fighting with us. They are very much British military personnel. Nice post though Bass

It's Fek The First You are right on that, by now I bet each party has assimilated perfectly its counterpart, and well... poverty and extreme necessity pushes you to do your absolute best in order to survive, and in this case Gurkhas pulled the trick brilliantly. Regarding your previous comments, just have one doubt, Did they actually got to fight in the Falklands?? the Argentinians shat themselves when Gurkhas arrived. That's what is heard in my Latin America... actually the legend says that when Gurkhas captured Argentinian 18yrs old army reservists, they raped them before slitting their throats with the kukri... geez, don't know if that's true but damn, it sounds pretty gruesome even for war standards.

Half much respect. You Gurkha get alot of respect. A living, welfere, benefits, have your own regiment and get to join overseas. But what for. Martial race hereos are forgotten. Brave Sikhs, Bermudans, Kenyans, Fijans, Hindus, Muslims and Jamicans. These don't get the respect your getting. Commonweath army was not made by one gurkha race. Bravery. Please just remain humble
