    Really enjoyable video. What grade of sand paper do you tend to use on the sander? And then when hand sanding? Thanks

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    Hi Tony. I use two grades on the sander. 120 for the initial sand. You don't tend to see it on my videos, but I generally use 2x 120 discs. The first one often fills with some sticky residue if you move to sanding before getting all the sticker left overs. Then 240 to smooth it off. By hand, I start at 240. Some suggest it doesn't make sense to use the same grade again but some of the time you still have some small swirls from the random orbital sander. The 240 hand sanding gets rid of these to give you as close to perfect a finish as possible. Then to 300 to finish off. If I'm looking for a really shiny finish on a bat that is staying natural, I'll go to 600. The 300 and 600 grits are wet and dry, but obviously no 'wet'. Hope this helps.

    Depends on how much you like you bat mate, and how long you want it to last. 95% of bats I see are too dry. This allows them to be bigger, but they break easier. Most manufactures recommend taking a protective facing off your bat at least at then end of every season, oiling it. Then get it out for pre-season oil again and apply a new protective facing. Most people apply a facing and leave it for multiple seasons, and only do 'maintenance' when there is visible damage to the face or edges. Oiling it, helps to prevent the visible damage.

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Simon. Sorry for the delayed reply. For years, I didn't use any polish until I got a buffer. Probably the best thing is bat wax to be honest (depending on if you need put on stickers or protective facings). Put a small amount of bat wax all over the bat, then let it sit for 10 minutes and buff it off with a clean rag. You need to get a bit of heat into it to get the wax to shine. Stickers and facings won't stick to it because of the linseed oil, so do this after you've put on stickers and facings. On a side note, the big hardware stores here in Australia sell polishing/buffing kits relatively inexpensively that you can mount into a power drill. This is what I did first off before going to a bench grinder set up. Hope this helps.

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Ratna. For really dry bats, you'll need a number of coats of raw linseed oil. If you check out this video at about the 11.20 mark, you'll see the process I usually follow to apply. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaaTzLmOXZmxns4.html I apply directly to the face. Leave it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off the excess. If your bat is really dry, best to leave it horizontal overnight and follow the same process the next day.

    Loved the video mate Just wanted to say couldn't u just put the fiber tape all round rather than cutting it into parts as the grip of the tape on the damaged area might be a bit weaker.. Just had a thought.....

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    4 жыл бұрын

    Mohammad Ahmad it is weaker because your splitting the fibres. But a good tape has good adhesive so doesn’t make a huge difference for bat repair. In 20 or so years of using fibre tape, I’ve not had damage to a bat using this method that wouldn’t have happen had it been wrapped all the way around. I prefer this way as is neater (you don’t get the tape folding on itself) and it’s easier to replace the tape on the face, without replacing the tape on the back, making for a cheaper repair and easier replacement in the future.

    Is it okay if I apply bat wax after polishing it, before putting the scuff sheet and the other stickers?

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'd always put stickers on before putting on bat wax or oil. You have to be careful with bat wax the same way you do oil. I had a set of stickers completely wasted as they wouldn't stick after putting on bat wax. If you wait long enough after oiling/waxing they will should stick, but most people are time poor or too excited to see the finished item, so want to put the new stickers on as soon as possible. When it comes to a scuff sheet, same thing. If you wait a few days after oiling/waxing it should stick. Hope this helps.

    What did you use on the toe of the bat to close the cracks ?

  • @BatandBallCricket

    @BatandBallCricket

    4 жыл бұрын

    Casimar Wright just a cheap super glue mate. If you put it on and let it sit for a few seconds and then hand sand, the still wet super glue mixes with saw dust to fill the crack. Just be careful you don’t go too slowly as the sandpaper will get super glued to your bat. Yikes!!!!

  • @BatandBallCricket

    4 жыл бұрын

    Casimar Wright if you use super glue, put it into the crack and let it sit for a few seconds. Not a lot of glue and for another 10 to 15 seconds. Then hand sand with 240 grit paper. The glue should still be a bit wet and will absorb the saw dust, appearing to close the crack. For bigger cracks, you may need to do this three or four times. Couple of tips: 1. Have a rag or paper towel ready. You will spill out more glue than you intend. 2. Don’t rest the sandpaper on the glued section, you will stick the sand paper to your bat. 3. Try and use sandpaper you’ve used a bit already. The super glue out of the crack will rest on the sandpaper and dry hard on it, killing the sandpaper.
