The Italian parliament has just passed a law on the right to self-defence, submitted by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. The bill broadens the definition of legitimate defence, allowing a homeowner to protect his or her property with the use of a firearm without fear of being prosecuted. But some critics are concerned by a possible rise in gun ownership in the country. Our Italy correspondents report.

@@FinalLugiaGuardian Problem with US is that lot of our policies are being written in based on feelings. In case of gun rights, it's being created based on hollywood. Silencer/suppresor does not make the gun shoot whisper quiet, 99% of the folks including LEOs will not be able to one tap an armed suspect in the gun holding hand or shoot them in a non-lethal spot in the leg. Amount of mental Olympic these people go through to think their gun laws are unjustified.

@@FinalLugiaGuardian Thanks for pointing that out, I never knew that. Definitely explains why their rights are much more intact that many other places. I definitely weep for New Zealand though. Although things have always been regulated, you had always been able to get pretty much whatever you want once you jumped through those hoops, until the last couple decades... It's nice Italy isn't so bad.

@Luis D. most hispanic people that I know and had the pleasure dealing with were usually very conservative and rightwing, probably because most of them have seen what liberal policies will lead to in their native homelands and so they do not make the mistake to vote for these same policies in countrys such as the US. Unfortunately there are more than enough progressive white liberals who have never experienced the true horrors of a socialist state and keep voting for people who're trying to take away all of their rights.

There’s always that one guy that has to complain about other people’s business. I’m originally from Romania, but now live in the US. I love the fact that I can protect myself and my family in case something happens. It is our right, and it’s not the governments business to know what we have, and to say what we can have, and what we can’t. Gun crimes are much higher in places that have strict gun laws here in the US. Some people can argue that they are the same as in places that are more relaxed. Like Texas. But even in that case. How come in a place where guns are very regulated, there is the same gun crime rate, as in places that have more relaxed ones? Do gun restrictions work in that case? Chicago, NewYork, and California have a pretty high rate, even tho carrying a gun there legally is almost impossible. Criminals can take advantage of this, since they get their weapons illegally. They are also, not that hard to make. It is fairly easy to build a gun, and even make your own ammo. I saw groups in Europe making their own guns, and ammo. How does gun control work in that case?

"no automatic weapon is permitted because they are considered weapons of war", they are illigal in every nation of the world, America included, becase automatic weapons are banned since 1982. I guess people make a lot of confusion between semi-auto and automatic. It's kinda of a shame that we are constantly talking about gun regulations but the overwhelming majority of people has no knowledge of firearms, even basic vocabulary related to them. This leads to completely useless debates because people simply do not understand each other. You can ask a dozen of people if they are ok to ban AR-15, they will answer "sure, nobody needs such weapons". Then you ask them what makes AR-15 so particular. They will usually talk some gibberish, then say "now i don't remember" and be quiet for a while, and then tell you "that is not the point". It's so annoying, nobody wants to learn, nobody wants to challenge thery opinions for real, everyone just react as the people around them tell them to in order to appear "good" and completely riddiculous or useless laws are approved without anybody even knowing what they say.

If you're gonna be a pedant then you can at least try to be correct. Fully automatic firearms aren't technically illegal in the US, they're regulated under the National Firearms Act of 1934 (which classifies them as and refers to them as machine guns) in the same manner as silencers, short barreled rifles, and short barreled shotguns; which are all almost practically banned given the expense and hoop jumping associated with purchasing and owning them. All NFA regulated items have to be registered when they're manufactured, but the machine gun registry was closed in 1986 with the Hughes Ammendment. Thus no new machine guns can be registered. Only machine guns that were manufactured and registered before 1986 can be legally owned or transferred. tl;dr US gun laws are stupid and if you don't believe me look into the all the stupid "totally not a stock" stocks there are out there for "pistols" so that you can shoulder a short weapon without becoming a felon.

Crazy how even in places like Italy with strict gun licensing and narrow self defense laws there are STILL anti-gunners who want to impose more and more restrictions on decent people who want to defend themselves. Just goes to show us in America, even if you make concessions, they will never stop.

The bad thing about Italy's gun regulations is they aren't laid ou in a way that's really all that easy to understand, but as I got to gradually understand them I found out for them to be well-reasoned. The "sporting license" is kinda abused to own more guns without added licenses, but I think that's way more a matter of nomenclature than actual "exploiting the system", if an unauthorized person enters your home at night and doesn't respond to verbal warning you have a clear-cut case of using self-defense so I don't see the need for a license for self-defense for use of a firearm at home like the anti-gun guy seems to imply.

I try to explain this: the license for self-defense is for going around with a loaded and ready to fire firearm, the sport license is for use them in a competition, HOWEVER, you are allowed to own ANY weapon you can legally buy and keeping it in your house. The number and the type of weapons is the same. And the law says that you can use ANYTHING to defend your life, but the aggression must be actual, someone who's menacing you from outside wuld not be considered a actual aggression. I don't if I have been able to explain this, in case, just ask.

castle docrine was in the legal side of things since the middle 90's. this one steamlined the white weapon side of things. in truth, about 90% of the law is a copypaste of the previous iteration (2012) with some nominal steamlines for licence owners. but hey, less paperwork.

People always have a natural right to self defense. No government has the authority to interfere with or modify this in the slightest. Governments can only interfere with or support it. In the U.S. , the right to armed self defense is unquestioned, some states and localities have attempted to interfere with this. They lose and will continue to lose in court. Armed people are Free, Free people are Armed. The Italian government recognizes this indisputable fact. May it always be so.
