Gulfstream G-IV Flight! HECTIC Departure, Startup to Shutdown

We’re back with another G-IV flight vlog! After almost a year in maintenance getting some heavy work done, this awesome bird is back in the skies. In this episode, we take her up on her first flight in months brining her back to her home base of San Jose. These flights must be approached with extra consideration and caution in case something goes sideways. I’m lucky to be flying with my long time friend Paul, who was also my sim partner during our initial Gulfstream training in 2020! Thank you for the continued support and there is much more exciting content on the way.

49 year old guy here. Went through hell and back(6 years and 15k) to get my 3rd class medical. Yesterday, I got my 2nd class medical. Currently, sitting at 425 hrs with ppl and instrument rating. Doing my commercial training right now. Bought me a C150J to build hours. I am hoping to leave my Currently well established career in hopes of making it in aviation. These videos are inspiring.

@juicelover69 Went to my MD for a routine check up. I told him I was dealing with grief (my brother had just passed away). The MD casually prescribed me a low dose of Xanax and said take it if it helps. I took maybe 3 out of the 60 prescribed. Two years later I applied for my 3rd and disclosed this obviously to the FAA. I didn't think it would become a nightmare. The faa asked for all kinds of psychological, psychiatric evaluation and cogscreen. Those cost 2-3k each. I had to take the cogscreen twice. Also had to go through random urine test monthly (which till this day I still have to). I even had my doc take possession of the 57 pills I never took and dispose it and vouch that he did. it didn't matter. I almost gave up twice because it was taking so long and costing so much. Somehow I didn't give up. After 6 years and 15k I got a special issuance for 3rd class last year. 2nd class upgrade was easy surprisingly thank God.

Those displays are strange. They are cathode ray tubes but they update the screen elements individually instead of the normal line scan. It draws the white lines separate from the color fills. Called random scan or vector scan. But must have been quite impressive when launched in the 80s. Almost looks modern still. When this came out it would have been a real technological feat whereas modern avionics is 25 year old tech level that costs 25$ to make and sold for 50k.

Owen I do like your videos, however I have to call you out on that approach and landing. Dipping below the GS (3 GS calls from the GPWS) the TCH for that RWY is 70'. Going through a 100' you have at least 500' or more before you get to the threshold, then floating to the 1000' marker is bad JUJU. Do that at KSFO and you will drag the gear through the seawall. In airline parlance that would be an unstable approach requiring a go-around. Honest question, Do you dip below the GS on an ILS to minimums reaching the DH and approach lights insight? I sure hope not. Train like you fight, fight like you train. Keep the blue side up.

@@FlyWithOwen That would be a good reason - now that you mentioned it, we weren't hearing it when you were talking to the towers either. I was just making sure, because I thought all airplanes had to have the numbers.

Owen - maybe the vid jumps ahead but at 6:28 you get 16R CFTO and you are holding short 16L. Did you take off 16L or 16R?

He crossed 16L and took off on 16R. 16L is typically utilized by piston aircraft doing pattern work, etc.

Hi Owen.Been following your channel for quite a wilde, though just became a subscriber recently. Started back with J.R channel. You guys have the most seriously lightand fun aviation videos? So, even though I understand you won`t be answering me (that`s not the point anyway, & you surely have other things to do), just wanted to tell that it`s frustrating that after 20 years + of flight simulation pilot (MSFS since the 80`s) there was never a single (valid) Gulfstream ADDON for flight simulation. On one of the most outstanding private jet ever . What a pitty. Well, luckly we have your videos, so good winds and happy landings from Portugal

Back in 96, when I got out of the Army with 2000 helicopter hours, I went to a helicopter charter service. I flew with the owner and he wanted to hire me. He said do you want the bad news? He told me I would be earning 17K per year and I would be on call 24/7. I didn't walk. I ran away. I got a job making auto parts starting at $17/hour. Never thought about aviation again.
