He doesn't look very well at all in this concert; even more remarkable then the beautiful music he manages to produce; such a great loss to music; we've lost too many characters like him.....Rubinstein, Ogdon, Cliburn......now the music colleges seem to turn out mechanics who can play the notes but don't all produce the music. Andre Previn said at a Leeds Piano Competition years ago that "It's discouraging that technique is now taken for granted...." Part of the music-creation experience is overcoming the technical challenges to get inside the composer's intentions. If it's too easy then the piano can just become a musical typewriter.....

I dare an opinion (that might be completely wrong). Maybe, there have always been just a handful of great musicians, but, as we look back, we see them all together; but in a century, how many giants could we name? Maybe, simply, great musicians are rare, and it's that rarity that makes them so precious. Gulda is probably my all times favorite. But as I'm listening to a complete different technique by Angela Hewitt, It makes me think, music is infinite, and so, hopefully, great musicians will be.

And fools continue to mock the gods. Who said that? But really, art is about INTERPRETATION. Isn't it? So who's to say Rubinstein & Cliburn weren't musical typewriters? Someone besides you with a differing OPINION? Please try to remind those who read your words that, "this is my opinion!" (IMO) Oh, and didn't you forget Horowitz and Kempff? Listen to Kissin, Wang, Lang Lang (just listen and ignore the hate critics), and how can you not recognize the women: de Larrocha, Argerich (you know Gulda taught her)! THEY are typewriters? REALLY! So many new bright burning beautiful stars on the piano horizon! IMO, they stand on the shoulders of those giants you named, among so many other stars in the pianistic galaxy, and I say they honor them, not desecrate! If you can not hear their gift and beauty I feel sorry for you and conclude you must be deaf! That said, this is about Gulda - I agree he doesn't look well, but dear Lord, could he play!
