    While he is mostly known for playing Gul Dukat, Marc Alaimo is the only actor in history of ST that had played the very first person of two different major alien races in history of ST. In TNG episode Neutral Zone he played Commander Tebok, the very first Romulan to appear on ST. In TNG episode Wounded, three years later, he played Gul Macet, the very first Cardassian to appear on ST. While these two were his most prominent of his appearances on ST, Alaimo also made several guest appearances in verious episodes. He played French speaking poker player named Frederick LaRouque in TNG episode Time's Arrow. He played character named Badar N'D'D in TNG episode Lonely Among Us. This was his only ST appearances for which he was not credited, however. Before he started playing Gul Dukat, he appeared in DS9 episode Far Beyond the Sun as Police Officer Burt Ryan. He was also directly involved in the creation of the look of Cardassians. Producers had trouble creating a brand new race which would play big role and had to look menacing. The problem was solved when Alaimo came to audition for a completely unrelated guest character. When producers saw Alaimo's naturally very long neck they made the decision to give Cardassians very prominent long necks. Naturally, Alaimo was the very first actor to be cast as Cardassian and his character Gul Macet was the first ever Cardassian to appear in an episode of ST.

    Alaimo is also in third place for most characters played by same actor in history of ST, with a total of six. Record holder is Vaughn Armstrong with a total of 11, while second place is shared by Jeffrey Combs, J.G. Hertzler, Randy Oglesby and Thomas Kopache with 7 each. Alaimo is also one of only six actors in history of ST who appeared on 10 different seasons, appearing on three seasons of TNG and all seven seasons of DS9. The others being Rosalind Chao, Jeffrey Combs, John De Lancie, Jonathan Frakes and Tim Russ. Alaimo is unique, however, for playing six totally distinct characters as he played a total of two humans, two Cardassians, an Antican and an Romulan. Despite his most famous character Gul Dukat obviously being a staunch nationalist and ultra conservative, Alaimo is a lifelong and vocal Democrat.

    Also, his character Gul Macet is very unique in history of ST in that he was the only Cardassian to have facial hair, as he had a distinct parted mustache around his mouth. No other Cardassian ever was shown with neither mustache nor beard.

    Commander Tebok wasn't the first Romulan to appear on Star Trek. That honour would go to the Romulan Commander in Balance of Terror, an Original Series episode all the way from 1966. He was played by Mark Lenard.

Sisko knows he is being played, but also knows he has to go along with it due to the hand he was dealt. This is very much like the dance that Sisko and Weyoun had about taking down the minefield, except they were on equal footing trying to play each other. DS9 had so much nuanced writing in which the words spoken were just camouflage for what was really being said.

    I think the idea is that after Ziyal dies and he loses the station Dukat loses it. Then he reveals his true evil when he and Sisko crash land and get honest - he wanted the bajorans to worship him and because they refused he wanted to kill them all. All the "charm" and diplomatic BS he spewed before went out the window and we see his real ugly nature. I agree that it would have been nice to have him more morally gray but that's not really the ending he deserved, he was a bad dude who revealed his true colors .

Even when you think the Guy for once is on the moral side chances are he is working you. In this case his main concern is to avoid a War between the Federation and Cardassia by stopping the Defiant. I really like this Dukat. I read somewhere that they sort of flipped on his character twice, originally he was meant as a straight villain but the writers did such an amazing job writing him as a grey character, the show runners started leaning into it, until at some point they decided to go back to the original plan. I really wish they hadn’t.

  • @fgdj2000

    @fgdj2000

    Flipped isn’t exactly it. In the DS9 companion, they say they always wanted him to be a villain, albeit a very complex one with complex motives, family live, kindness, but ultimately he believes in his own moral superiority and that of his people above all else. However, because of how well written he was and Marc Alaimo‘s amazing performance, fans actually started to sympathize with him and see him more as a heroic character. The writers did too good a job and so with seasons 5-6 they gave him more villainous things to do. Particularly the episode „Walz“ was the moment when Dukat truly grasped his own nature and quit deceiving himself - instead of that breaking him, this made him actually far more dangerous.

    Mostly a response to B5 which was meant as a bit of a space opera from the start. DS9 started episodic like every other Trek before it, but as B5 hit it's stride and started getting good numbers DS9 switched and started putting in story arcs that built on each other and didn't ignore what happened last week ( as opposed to TOS and TNG where previous episodes might get some mention, but mostly didn't matter and each episode was self contained ) Hell, IIRC JMS tried to sue, seeing as he pitched B5 to Paramount first before going elsewhere ( I forget who picked up B5 ). Made even stronger since DS9 went a bit off the rails for Trek ( as envisioned by Roddenberry ) and turned into a full scale war with fleet actions and everything....oddly, after B5 got popularity for the same and apparently people liked seeing ships blowing each other up. That being said, both shows had excellent actors who really owned their characters and made them what they were ( For the record I was always a Trek fan first, and I liked DS9.... but big B5 fan too and growing up watching both as they went on it was kinda obvious even without forums who was copying who for viewer numbers )

    The fact that a teleporter accident like this even CAN happen is terrifying to think about. They could probably do this on purpose if they wanted to. Make several Captain Picards to handle diplomacy in different sectors. Go even further and make an army out of one man. It also kind of makes me think that "teleportation" can be seen as murder. They are just disassembled and then replaced with an exact replica in a new location. If the teleporter can make copies of the datastream, what makes the first copy any more real than the second? But in the way that the two Rikers are different people, doesn't that mean that every person who comes out of a teleporter is technically a different person than the one that went in? In that sense, we've watched our beloved characters die over and over again on screen. I certainly don't LIKE to think of it that way...

    Star trek transporter tech is massively underused from a security/military point of view. Cloning is a nice use but just think about how to use it for security. Intruders aboard, beam them off the ship or into the brig. Need to disable an enemy ship, beam the crew off the ship or weapons aboard. Hell thinking about it properly, it's also a perfect medical device. Got a tumour, beam it out or just don't bring it with you. Infected by borg nanoprobes, beam yourself away, don't transport them. Loose an arm/suffer a bad injury on an away mission, use a backup of your last transporter journey to reset to an earlier state (you may loose some memory this way). But then star trek is occasionally dumb with its tech logic. Entirepises transporters are down, ok, it has a half dozen shuttles each with a transporter aboard, use them. Same with comms or sensors.

Before to me he was just kind of a self preening egotist, but this moment at 2:45 to me showed that Dukat was actually capable of big picture and rational thinking. And that the scenario he just stated was not all "Cardasia will not stand for this!" bluster but rather him going, "Yeah no, this situation is about to spiral beyond both our collective control and we need to do something about it now." I mean, Cardassia basically lost a war against the Klingons in a later season. If they were provoking a war against the Federation that would've been avoidable, the Klingons would've very likely supported the Federation if it was even in need of support. And against two AQ-superpowers, the Romulans would've kept to themselves very likely, so the Cardassians would be up against two powers while they couldn't even stand against one of them alone. Politically, they were between a rock and a very hard place.

    I mean, Cardassia did just end a war with the Federation that lasted for like 20 years. Neither are in a position to fight, especially with Cardassia dealing with internal conflict, and the Federation still recovering from the Borg attack, however there is so much bad blood and the peace is so precarious, that the slightest wrong move could result in a war that would probably not go anywhere new in the following 20 years, while weakening them both to an outside invasion - let's say something like the Klingons, Romulans, or even the Breen or Tholians picking off a good chunk from one side - not to mention the looming threat of the Dominion over their heads. Neither side could go to war, but both of them could be forced to really easily.

  • @jsnrvst

    @jsnrvst

    2 жыл бұрын

    Dukat was a villain. Sure, he had complexities to his character that made him feel more relatable than some other villains in Star Trek history. Gul Dukat oversaw the occupation of Bajor for many, many years. He still views them as an inferior race. He is pragmatic, and doesn't antagonize the Federation or the Bajorans unnecessarily when there's nothing to gain from it, but when an opportunity presents itself to retake Terok Nor, he takes it. In this particular scene, he knows there's nothing to gain by going to war with the Federation. The Cardassians and the Federation are too evenly matched. A lot of people would die and neither he personally nor Cardassia will profit. When he gets the Dominion on his side, and they offer him rulership over Cardassia, he changes his tune. Dukat is a savvy politician, he knows how to use leverage to get what he wants. Dukat, however, cares a lot about his image. He is a bit of a narcissist. He sees himself as a magnanimous despot. He believes the occupation was worse before he came in charge, and he believes that makes him a good man. He desperately wants Sisko and Kira to see him that way, and goes to great lengths to try to convince them, and for a time that kind of looks like a path to redemption. He is further humanized by his love for his half-bajoran daughter, Ziyal. None of which really makes up for his crimes. He ends up selling out his planet and the entire Alpha Quadrant to the Dominion because that will let him become the ruler of Cardassia, and let him retake Terok Nor. The failure of his plan along with the death of his daughter drives him to insanity, and he finally shows his true colors in the episode Waltz. And he makes a further alliance with the pah-wraiths in a bid to destroy Sisko and all the Bajorans. Is Dukat a loyal Cardassian? Eh. It depends how you define loyalty. Dukat certainly seems like a patriot most of the time, but patriotism takes many different forms. There's an argument to be made for dissidence in the face of tyranny and injustice. In the episode Second Skin, we are introduced to Legate Ghemor, an influencial cardassian politician and reformist who believes the Central Command and the Obsidian Order had to much power over Cardassia, and favored democracy and due process. Of course, some would call him a traitor, but opposing the government, especially a military junta with secret police, isn't the same as opposing the people/nation/planet. Ghemor is loyal to the Cardassia that ought to be. In a way, that makes him a patriot too, some might say more of a patriot than Dukat. TL;DR Dukat might have been a patriot, and a complex, layered character, but he was also a fascist, a racist, a narcissist and an opportunist. He definitely is a villain in the arc of the show, but he's not always the antagonist in specific episodes. Patriotism should never get in the way of your conscience.

    @Regalecus glesne A fascist is an authoritarian who believes (or pretends to believe) that there is an "us" (that includes the fascist) better than a "them", but that this "them" is taking up space, resources and power that rightfully belongs to the "us", and that "they" must be stopped, usually with force. This, by the way, should not be confused with the struggle of marginalized classes. The "us" in question is one that has historically had more than it's share of power, what it fears is having to share it with "them". Facts don't matter to fascists. It is an ideology driven by fear and hate. The "us" can be defined in many ways, but historically in America it has primarily involved straight white men born in the United States, but it can include others as long as they toe the line and support the US in a few issues. White women are in if they agree there's too much immigration. Latinxs are in if they oppose abortion and support traditional gender roles. Fascists are also hypocrites. They will call for free speech when they are banned from Twitter or get a speaking event cancelled, but they have no qualms about silencing climate scientists, bullying women off their platforms or arbitrarily censoring users on their social media platform who would criticize them. Fascists don't believe in free speech, but they will use YOUR belief in free speech to advance their cause. They don't believe in LGBT rights, but they will use your beliefs in LGBT rights to get you on board hating on muslims. They don't believe in helping the poor, but they will tell you the reason they can't help the poor is because there are too many immigrants stealing their jobs. Whatever gets the job done. As for Gul Dukat, he is a fascist because he is 1) an authoritarian who 2) believes Cardassians are superior to other races, specifically Bajorans. Is that not enough? The entire Cardassian Union is fascist. It is ruled by a military junta and propped by secret police. They have screens everywhere constantly spreading propaganda. The justice system is a joke, has no concept of due process. You are always guilty and sentenced before the trial even begins.

    Painting Dukat as a villain here simplifies the issue grossly. You have to consider what culture he comes from and under what influence he was raised. For a Cardassian of his time and of that culture at the time, he can justifiably called a fair and mild man when held to Cardassian standards. It is only later, when he utterly broke, thanks to a combination of grief and Sisko-patented gaslighting, that Dukat became actually irredeemably evil. But this was way before that. Making Dukat out to be some kind of Hitler is just simplifying the issue with a knockout argument.

    @@Archedgar maybe because the romulans are still embarrassed after their ass kicking at the Battle of Cheron in the romulan Earth war. @@attiepollard7847 That's a really horrible equivocation though. The Romulans are on par or superior to the Federation in strength and their empire is vast. N. Korea is a socialist shithole that struggles to keep from starving to death and making sure the nation will have electricity next month. That's either insanely generous to the socialists or grossly insulting to the Romulans.

    I’d agree although that may stem from the fact I always thought the federation was more compatible with the Romulans than the Klingons (was I the only one?) they almost added a few romulan characters there was the officer attache that was introduced when the defiant was given to ds9. There was the romulan prisoner of war in the dominion prison and more but they didn’t go anywhere with them

    If the federation and starfleet actually shaped up their internal security and end-goal war conduct, they would be terrifying. They have some of the best tech minds in the galaxy. No alpha quadrant power would stand against them. Even the dominion would probably be afraid to try and take them over because they're acquainted with so many powerful aliens (the Q, the Prophets, the Dowud, the Organians, and so on) But that would make them more akin to section 31, that tried bio weapons to entirely wipe out an enemy species.. The federation is the space hippies of the alpha quadrant basically XD

They may have hit a low population (eugenics war) and have access to space magic but their actions are those of a suicide based religious commune or lovecraftian cult, taunt and retreat until your competitors are both annoyed and flush with resources THEN screw up the diplomacy so you end up in a desperate war of survival, repeat as needed relying on Deus ex machina from 1-2 standout crews with divine providence to survive, smash your bow enemies ambitions and back to the taunting.

    Nobody should've been allowed entry onto the Defiant unless they were specifically cleared by Sisko. The vessel is a special purpose ship for a sole specific duty - to give a whooping to foreign powers. That makes it off limits to anyone, even admirals, unless they are cleared by the commanding officer; no delegates allowed to make that decision.

    I like this version of Dukat very much. I call him Sane Dukat. He is a career officer, a quick tinker and a pure professional who wants what's best for the Cardassian Empire. In this episode, that is keeping the peace with the Federation and not escalating the conflict. He works together with Starfleet Officers, former enemies to get it done. This will change later on and also make for an interesting character development. One of the best characters in all of Star Trek.

    When producers were creating Cardassians as new enemies for Federation and Starfleet, they had huge problem how to make them look different than all other races seen before. The problem was solved when Marc Alamo came to audition for various alien roles on TNG. Alamo has a very long neck in real life and when producers saw that they came up with idea of all Cardassians having long necks and having ridges on them. Naturally, Alamo was the very first actor who was cast in role of than still unnamed Cardassian leader, later to be named Gul Dukat.
