  • @Fernwald84

To my ears the spruce vs cedar top follows the old rule of thumb: the spruce is brighter, punchier, more focused. The cedar is darker, rounder, more diffuse (but not in a negative sense). The spruce favors the Bach and other highly contrapuntal works. The cedar, with its warmer color, is perfect for the Spanish romantic repertoire. However, these differences are not huge and either instrument is, in my opinion, perfectly suitable for any repertoire. My favorite? The spruce on MWF and the cedar on TTS. For Sundays, it's a toss-up. :-) Very beautiful, musical playing as always. The technique makes the guitar and not the other way around

George: the difference is not much, because both are Michele della Giustina's guitars, which are already very high end vintage guitar (though i would really prefer Ramirez's ones).. however, for beginner and intermediate players, i think this video may also help them to choose which type/kind of guitar they want to continue with.. I would really say, don't waste money on spruce ones for beginner and intermediate guitars.. a solid top cedar guitar nowadays always comes with higher quality woods for other parts of a guitar.. the overall playing experience is totally different.. a cedar one would make people more pleasant to continue to play..

The different scales are going to contribute a big difference in the sound as well the wood choice. The spruce is a 630mm and the double-top cedar is a full size 650mm scale. That said I prefer the cedar in this demonstration, but both sound amazing due to the playing of a masterful teacher.

The spruce sounded way better to me: clean and precise... The cedar has also its own advantage: warm and fuller sound, but I think with the cedar basses are a little bit blurry and it becomes much more difficult to emphasise the bass lines when one wants to do so. Both are much better than my own instrument anyway... So, enjoy playing them :)

Definitely one of the better comparison videos and the player is a pro so it is just the sound of the guitars we are hearing that is different. I have always been a cedar man but the spruce just had a bit more definition and the trebles were really sweet. The cedar was nice too but the bass was just a bit less defined. As far as the back and sides, well, I have known a couple of great builders and they would challenge anyone to tell the difference based on back and sides as long as they are solid wood with the possible exception of maple which should only be on a flamenco guitar or electric really. I'm going to have to go out and buy a spruce top guitar now...

Thank you, yet again for such informative video with great playing as well. If anyone is thinking of getting a Spruce or Cedar top guitar, please, don't make the mistake I have made years ago. DO go to the shop or where ever the guitar is and listen to its sound. There is no right or wrong as regards to which top the guitar is made of. But you can waste your time and money by getting a guitar of which the sound you don't like. Please please please, listen to the sounds of the guitar before you invest your hard earned cash. The spruce top sounds a little more masculine whereas the cedar is more gentle. Each produces wonderful sounds and as demonstrated here, they seem to sound better with a certain type of music. So, for personal choice, I may go for the Spruce.

The cedar double top has more carry and a richer overtone package, hence the "warmer" sound. The spruce has a more "direct" , hence the brighter sound both because the tone wood is spruce but also because of the influence of the walnut back and sides

Both sound wonderful, but to my headphone ears the double top is confused in sound. It's not sure if it's spruce, or cedar, something in between. So when I'm listening for specific details in your passages, the double top looses something in the definition. The new guitar with walnut is surprising to me as I've never considered walnut in this context. The sound from this guitar should be something when it opens up after a few years, as it has the sound to start with. Between the two - in a blind test it could give the double top a run for the money. The spruce top just sings and is balanced with the walnut. Great projection, and the presence from it lets you know it. The double top is a bit shy by comparison. Just my opinion.

A very interesting comparison, but also a tribute to Michele in building these two fine guitars. It has always interested me in how the modern luthiers are "chasing" or searching for that sound. Personally I wonder about double or in you case - triple top as there is also balsa between the layers. Plus the glue be it hide or otherwise, now on two of the surfaces. How all this interacts at various frequencies? Back and sides made from laminate wood plus glue is typically relegated to 'lesser" guitars. So laminating a top, albeit with finer woods, and all solid? I would like to see further investigation of the 'tornavoz" which Torres used in his smaller bodied guitars to focus the sound. Mandolins would have a "Virzi" which would be a smaller sized top inside the body, complete with f holes and attached to the underside of the top at various points, but with a space between them. You could barely see the Virzi via the top f holes. Different ways to focus the sound. Combinations of methods to keep us all discussing and searching for the magic.

Now, I'll be professional: Spruce gives a more precise tonal projection compared to cedar, but that doesn't mean one is better than the other. The spectrum of projection on a spruce guitar gives more crystalline, more resonant sounds with a lot of timbre that maintains the same tone of a cedar guitar for longer. Finally, spruce sounds differently in Bach's repertoire than, for example, cedar, which is rounded and wonderfully romantic. While cedar has a seductive intimacy with those basses and mid tones. Generally speaking, everything has its pros and cons. I played in the professor's class at the classical academy in Zagreb.

Honestly cannot say one is objectively better than the other. Both sounded great. On the one hand the first piece is improved with the clearer note separation from the Spruce. And it would seem that at least technically the Spruce is superior but the Cedar when played right connects better with emotion. So I don't know I would call it a tie.

Your playing is beautiful. That being said, this is NOT a TRUE comparison, and I thank you for your honest disclosure, although the title is click bait. The "Cedar top", is laminated, (plywood), and not a "SOLID CEDAR TOP". The second fact is that the 2 tops are paired with different backs and sides. Rosewood, will never emulate Walnut. The densities of the wood are entirely different. And last but not least, the age, and amount of time spent playing each guitar, matters immensely, as does humidity, and other environmental conditions. The more the guitar is played, (and correctly taken care of), the tighter the wood becomes on a molecular level. Wood is a living thing. The more vibration it goes through from playing, the sweeter the sound, because the molecules are vibrated closer together. This is why a Stradivarius violin, (many now in humidity controlled museums) are worth so much money and the sweet sound it produces cannot be replicated even with modern technology. With guitars, even the amount of "scalloping" on the braces changes the sound of 2 similar models, to say nothing of the way they are braced, (Fan braced, "V" braced, etc.). Then, nuts, saddles, bridges, and their placement. I do appreciate that the body style was similar, and that both are "classical" guitars and from the same luthier. The nut width may vary, and intonation was adjusted for each. They both sound remarkable. But this is not, "Spruce vs, Cedar".

I'm loving that Cedar sound all the way. I guess the spruce will get better after a few years. Both great guitars obviously. Great playing!

If I could only have one guitar I would definitely buy cedar top. But if I could have more than one, I would have both in my collection.

Generally, the spruce would be louder than cedar if the cedar is not a double top. Can you make a comparison between solid top spruce and solid top cedar, so we can hear the true difference between the two. your playing is great.

Both sounds great. But the one with Ceder gives warmer and richer sound. For me as a steel guitar player, ceder is more like Gibson Super jumbo and spruce is like Taylor 814. I'm going to get one nylong, probably Ramirez. Thanks for this video and I'll get a guitar with ceder top.

And also the bracing will affect the sound and you didn't tell us, can you check if its a fan or lattice bracing. Thanks have a great day.

It is difficult to compare a new spruce top vs. a new cedar top. The spruce top needs some time to develop its whole sound potential in opposite to the cedar top.

Très beau test et un des plus objectifs. Il est difficile de trancher ; tout est beau... On devrait faire des violons en cèdre ! 🤔

The guitar "spruce" possesses a clearer tone and there an echo of the sound better held, But all this is difficult to appreciate on a video, even of quality
