I would have setup that uke with a low g string - you’ll get a seriously wicked tone out of it without that weird high pitched string at the bottom end lol.

Just as an idea, can you possibly get a uke that has a pick-up built in, maybe it's possible to make a kinda uke distorted crunch effect. My mandolin has a pick-up built in although it is rare that I use it, and I'm just a 45 Yr old beginner
