GUITAR TONE - Gibson Pickup Shootout: 57 Classic Plus vs Burstbucker Pro
Музыка
Two very popular humbucker pickups go head to head. Very light tube distortion used on the Marshall amp to highlight the pickups.

How much do you wanna bet someone out there will say "This demo isnt correct. The guitars are not exactly the same. One is missing a pickguard, which means the tone will be off."

+Sam Moon All true, but 90% of what you're hearing is the pickups. There is obviously a difference. And I like the jangly 57 Classics better. Crank it up and I might like the others. That's why guys have more than one guitar.

57 Classics my favorite pickup
There's nothing to dislike about the 57s
I've just swapped Burstbuckers for a 57 classic and classic plus. The Burstbuckers sounded a bit muddy to me, and I wanted a crisper cleaner sound. The Classics are sharper. The bridge pickup is something I can now use.

It should be the opposite, crisper pickups are burstbuckers, while 57classic are softer...did you look on pickups when you mounted them?:) maybe you have burstbuckers still
If I had either in my guitar I wouldn't switch them, but if I was buying a new set of pickups I would go with the 57 Classics for sure.

I think the point is to show the upper range. The difference will reduce as the treble is turned down.
I thought the BB Pros sounded better for that particular song.

All the tone comes out once the pick guard is removed. When you take off the pick guard you get a more open tone with tighter lows and a better mid range bite with clearer more articulate highs. Try it!!

Funny joke, but the rest of the guitar absolutely does matter. You can hand the same mic to Homer Simpson that a singer with a good voice uses and expect the same results.
Huge difference to my ears, and that's just from listening over youtube. Imagine being there in person, and actually playing it. How was the feel? I like the burstbucker better myself.

+Human Steve The burst buckers are slightly hotter than the Classic 57's which means for leads or power chords the burst buckers will sound amazing, but for that jangly distorted classic rock sound the 57's work great.
Good comparison of two of the best and most common pickups Gibson makes!
Yes, and i prefer the 57 Classic
57 classics all the way for me, a touch brighter, much better articulation! Great vid
Great comparison - 57 Classics will give you solid mids and more clear highs while Burstbucker Pros give you paired mids and lows. I can appreciate the 57 Classics, but I'm partial to Burstbucker Pros in my Gibsons
I'm happy to have both.
Too much treble...was surprised the BBP's were darker though. They are brighter than my 57C's in any of my LP's
57's seem to be brighter and more open sounding, while the burstbuckers sound much darker. burstbuckers for me.
Thanks for the video man! 57 classics all the way!
Can't beat the 57's. Work really well wired 50's style. Just move the capacitor lead on the volume pot from the end lug to the center and enjoy
Excellente démonstration (joli jeu en plus). On entend parfaitement le grain des deux micros, merci.
I can definitely hear the difference. I'm not good with words, but the 57s sounded like guitar to amp and the humdingers sound like it was echoed through a hall. 57s win.
57 classics
57s always win for clean and light overdrive to me so far but I am open to hear any gibson pickups!
The Burst Bucker Pro's break up quicker than the 57's. I'm getting a Flying V with the 57's and just wanted to hear the difference. My LP Standard has the BB Pro's and its a little to much, might change them. Thanks!
I have 57 classic and classic pluses in my LP Traditional and SG Standard.. They are how classic rock should sound and do blues well too. I love em!
Definitely hear a difference. Still love the 57/57+ combo over anything that's not a custom built pickup. Got them in my Epi LP Standard with RS Guitarworks electronics
57s janglier and bbp rounded. you can also get this by subtle playing differences, so next time 'blind' yourself or another player to which has which pickup . also play clean then distorted, and include lead play obviously.
I liked the BB. I have Frampton copy and they sound great but I've wanted an LP with the 57 for a long time. But trying to find one in the Honeyburst without coil splitting is impossible. The best I could find so far is one that Bonamassa speaks highly if that I think is called the Normburst.
Both are great!
hi is it possible to have a warm tone (Clapton woman's tone ?) with the bb pro in the neck positon ? (think about john Sykes with his classic 57 or Gary Moore with Peter Green's guitar) because the bb pro has alnico V and not II or 3
Yes the 57's sounded more open and less muddy. Both sounded good and your playing was really great!!!

Classic legendary Les Paul sound is first of all a NECK pickup! Then, both and in the last order is the bridge...
Great comparison, I know burstb as a friend here in Brazil has a Gibson Les Paul fitted with burstb, but personally I prefer the 57. In my humble opinion the 57 is more flexible adjustments to the player ... But I can also assure you that if I got a couple of burstb I equip my frankestein brazilian LP without any remorse ...
Boy, the 57 classics is the clear winner here for me. I really expected the BB Pros to be a little brighter given they have an Alnico 5 magnet, but not the story at all!
Hey thanks for the video. Seriously, you make the most straight forward comparisons of gear. Your videos are the most helpful. Honestly though, I didn't like either. I thought both sounded weak and harsh. I was not expecting that outcome. I honestly expected the 57 to blow away the BB Pros. Thanks again!

Useful, thanks. Both great, just a matter of preference ...... like Speyside vs Islay...
57 Classics were clear and kept each string at the same volume. The overall sound quality of the 57s was noticeably better.
57 classic sound best to my ears
i like both for different songs... ;-)
I don't know if I should go for the 57 classic plus or Seymour Duncan Phat Cats on my epiphone les paul standard especially after actually hearing the Gibson 57s
Best comparison I seen so far. I kind of liked the burstbucker, and it must be nice with some fuzzface and univibe. Hope you make a new video, where you try to alter the sound to match each pickup best. It would just be nice to listen to how that will affect the tone. I'm sure we can see each of the pickups best sides, and maybe the views of the '57 fan will change, or other vice.

Red Rot Thanks man. Yep, Zeppelin... "Four Sticks".
Very well done and this produced exactly what I am experiencing. I have three Gibson's and three very distinct tones. In short - 57 Classics are Brighter with defined Mid tones. Burstbucker Pros are Darker with Mid to Low Tones. 57 Classics have s very distinct chime, where the Burstbuckers offers more muted deeper tone - as some commenters here are saying - sound like Mud. Except I prefer the Burstbuckers because of the bite at higher volume. Now, compared to 490R/490T, these are even deeper than the Burstbucker Pro. I'll even add this. I have a Fender Telecaster Deluxe with Fender Wide Ranging Humbuckers (stock) - and they sound very much like Gibson 57 Classics. If you read into the backstory of Fenders WR Humbucker, you'll know why.
I prefer the 57 classic, they just sound very traditional to me. I'm going to replace the 490/498 on my studio for the 57 classic set soon. Also I love your Les Paul traditional, looks like mine haha

***** Ya, the Traditional is nice, but freak'n heavy! I'm a fan of 57 classics.
BB Pro = more fuzz less jangle. '57 Classic Plus = less fuss more jangle.
Can you hear a difference? Yeah, I can. One is clipping and one isn't. lmao But thanks for making this. Would love to see another with the levels even.
I’m about to change out the BB Pro's in my 2009 GLPS because the sound like they were potted with mud. Then I shall proceed to the nearest mud puddle and return them from whence they came.
Supposedly the 57 Classic has more output than the Burstbuckers go figured.
I like the raunch of the BB Pro...always have.
57 classics for me
Classic 57 gives a rich sparky sound. More Middle tone/high end, more bites. Burstbuster gives a deeper/darker sound. More bass (less medium/high end than 57). (more muddy some says !) Should gives a fatter sound on overdrive. Different sounds, different mood. 57 I love it : for the expected ultra classic tone Burstbuster Pro : I loves it for the different character, darker and fatter sound.
Four Sticks is the song for those wondering
in my experience the 57s sound much muddier and the burstbuckers have crisp jangly highs.
sounds like the Burstbucker is clipping your mic a bit. It also sounds a lot duller
@jAMMAN798
9 жыл бұрын
Lothar ThirtyFour Surprisingly, it did sound like that just before I recorded it… in person, with no clipping. :) The Marshall Vintage Modern has a clean channel that you can overdrive with Body & Detail controls to give a vintage tone. Which in my opinion sometimes does sound like a blown speaker if too much Body is added. Since I had no choice but to leave the amp settings exactly the same to compare both sets of pickups, what you're hearing is that the Burstbucker Pro's have a bit more low & midrange to them as well (in my opinion) more dynamics. Great pickups if you hit a series of notes along with power chords. Thanks for watching & commenting.
Hello, what do you recommend to get closer to the sound of Gary Moore, between BB's and 57 '?

Only good finguers. Un overdrive TS9 et beaucoup de travail. A mon sens. Car gary Moore a eu plusiuers sons différents dans sa carrière. Je vous souhaite de trouver "votre" son.
God damnit, now I need to get my self a les paul traditional as well
57's for dirty, Burstbuckers for clean.
hi sg with burstbucker pro vs sg with classic 57+ ? :)
these are the 57 plus vs the burstbucker pro... any significant difference between these and the regular versions? To be fair, you need to compare clean and heavier distortion. That's where the differences will show more.

ken masters I have not tried the different burstbucker pickups, only the ones in the video. I would guess, like most Gibson range of pickups that are in the same category the difference would be in the highs when doing leads... either bright or less bright & more rounded. Most Les Paul players like the "less bright" for general rock & the "more bright" if playing tight rock/metal rhythms.

jAMMAN798 Cool thanks for posting this
57 classics are Alnico 2 magnets nice compressed mids. Burstbucker pro's are alnico 5 magnets. Tight bold top and bottom tones.
Por supuesto que se escucha la diferencia. Las 57 son más vintage mientras que las bursbuckers son más musculosas, con más medios. 👍🏻❤️
Hear more low end with the BB pro. It's a good pickup and the '57C+ is too. That was the difference I heard.
Kindda funny how perceptions change just by hearing both pups compared in a solidbody and semihollow body guitars. The same test in a 335 style guitar sounds extremely different from the sonic ánd tonal point of view.
00:37 into the video and the 57 sound so good!
I think you miked the amp wrong. The Burstbucker demo sounds like you're red-lining the input level. Hard to believe the pick-up itself would create that 'red-lined level' sound.
Secrets Of The Sound...
The burstbucker sounds actually closer to the LZ recording..
Interesting but just showing one tone example dosen't tell me if I would want them... Which of the Burstbucker Pro Pickups are these, Burstbucker 1,2, or 3's? I wondered so much I already had a Les Paul with 57 classics, and bought an Epi Florentine Pro with Burstbuckers. I like both LP's. But I don't know if the Epi and the Gibson Burstbuckers are the same... and more importantly, where are the coil tapped comparisons??? I would like to hear a comparison of both of the pickups played clean, then with a little grit, then nasty, then all three tones once tapped to single coils. Is that anywhere?
@jAMMAN798
9 жыл бұрын
Sargent Pepperland To be honest, these are just old Burstbuckers, so probably the first gen. As for coil tapping, that became a somewhat standard feature on some model Les Pauls. The Les Pauls in this vid don't have coil tap, they are your standard true natured vintage old school Les Pauls models.
I say BurPer is a better pickup. In my experience it was always very transparent and definitely sounds like a guitar it is in. 57s feel loose for me. BTW, is this a standard 57 or a 57 plus in the bridge?
@jAMMAN798
9 жыл бұрын
AnalRectum You are correct, a 57 Plus in the bridge.
I've watched this video numerous times, BUT this time, I watched and listened to it through F150 Shaker stereo. ...........news, lots of news. From this video, it seems like that BB have more lower end and sound fuller. Well..... As a 16 studio faded owner with the bbs pros, I must question things. How similar are the pickups in both of those guitars are raised? Do both of them have same brand, gauge and age strings? Reason why I started watching BBs pros vs other pickups, I for some reason wanted 57 classic plus in my studio vs BBs, but after watching this, I dont know anymore, BBs pros are wicked
I like the 57's.
IF IT WERE ANNOUNCED AS (INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCE) OF THE SAME MODEL, I SHALL AGREE WITH IT. MAY BE GIBSON WOULD LIKE TO PROMOTE THE LINE UP PF BURST BUCKER 1,2,3, AND PRO. BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCE TO PROVIDE THEM WTH WHOLE BRAND NEW LINE UP. SO DECIDED TO USE OLD ONE WITH NEW NAME
The BB Pros sound better except they break up too much. If I had that guitar, I would try lowering the BB Pros height or adjust amp.
Notice how EVERY amplifier has a bass control adjustable feature? So if your pickup is making the sound of MORE bass than the other pickup in a shoot out video, the BASS PROBLEM is caused by YOU plugging the pickup into the wrong product for those pickups. Cause it doesn't matter where you put the amps EQ controls, you won't ever be able to remove that sonic problem which causes the extra/ reduced bass sound. The problem is caused by electrical miss matching of signal types. Somewhere along the signal chain, your pickups signal got converted into DC instead of AC. Maybe your problem is caused by you not using the Gibson cable. It could be the BB pro pickups predate the Vintage Modern amp. So that means 1 of the coils in the pickup is clashing with the custom circuits built into the amp head.
My LP Standard has stock BB 1 AND 2. I changed them for CL 57, but went back to the BB 1 and 2. BB has richer tone for an LP. On the other hand , for hollow body guitars the CL 57 sounds better.
the Gibson 57s sounded a lot brighter than the burstbuckers they were almost like single coils
are they classics or classic plus? You seem to not differentiate between the two.
@jAMMAN798

I believe they are classic plus.
もちろん聞き取れる。高温に重心があるのが57、全体的に均等にパワーがあるのがBBpro

I've never had 57s I'm sure I'm missing out
57 for the Win!
from my perspective 57 has less bass and outpu...a little bit more cleaner sound, burstbucker has boomy...bassy sound...
BB Pro for me. More attitude.
almost no difference....anyway i prefer BB pro
