Hi Tatyana, thank You for giving advice. Some additional comments from my end regarding strings: 1. Different strings change intonation quality (deviation of tones from perfect frequency). The higher the string tension, the stiffer the string material and the lower the elasticity the bigger the problem. Nevertheless if intonation is bad, different strings can improve it. 2. Instruments that are not build very stiff (betwwen bridge and nut) will change string hight relative to fretboard if tension is changed. That can lead to string buzz or decreased playing comfort (strings to high). Note: Very stiff instruments are usually horrible. 3. The gaps in the nut need to fit for the strings. If strings are to thick it becomes difficult to tune, if strings are to thin it can buzz. 4. Points 1 to 3 mean, that an instrument can be normally only set up optimal for one type of strings. If somebody found his or her favorite strings, especially premium instruments should be brought to a luthier to be set up new. 5. If You like to experiment a lot instruments with adjustable bridge are a good choice. You can at least fix intonation there Yourself. Best regards Rainer

I’ve had a revelation lately with rectified nylon trebles. I really love them. Very strangely, they sound even better when I don’t buff polish the edges of my nails. they have a very sweet, crystalline warm, but not too warm sound. Vibrato and other Ornamentations sound more nuanced and feel more satisfying. experiences may vary but for my technique and taste, I think I’ve found my strings.

Hi, i prefer strings high tension it's because in from of my classical guitar has the tape of Pino abeto canadience and my tape of back plus the aro and the neck are a wood very well to be a concert's guitar. It' normal to buy a classical guitar into of a store of music but i prefer to send it to build. There are many types of classical guitars. It's comment to see tape of cedro in from of a classical guitar but only the luther has the last word in the end. Well, there are some strings with a sound very intresting and i'm very awesome for the form that your explaing. Now, i need to watch more vídeos yours about the classical guitar.

Pro Arte has strings excelents like normal tension, high tension, hard tension. Well, the strings of carbon are a little more expensive but they have a sound better that the of nylon i think so. The true that i use the strings of nylon because they're more cheap. When i practice too much i don't care so much her sound. Only when i have a concert or something like that i put the strings 3 days before.

Thank you so much for your precious tips. I wish better strings made me play better but I'm still a bad player so far. Anyway, why are hard tension strings not suitable for playing Bach? This makes me quite sad because I love Bach music and I'm currently using hard tension strings. The thing is I don't only love classical music but many other kinds of music. Still I wouldn't play metal on a classical guitar, and I'm not into flamenco either.

i bought recently a C40 for my niece. normal tension or even light is the way to go, considering that it is a total beginner guitar not suitable for long term studies. protip: consider to lower or to rise the saddle and then experiment and change to a tension you are comfortable with. to adults i always recommend trying to practice with hard tension first and then lowering till you hit your personal sweetspot. btw. dadarrio pro arte beats savarez and nearly just any other brands by the price-quality ratio and high durability. huge factor if you practice a lot.

Hi, not Tatyana here (and it's two years later, but someone else might like to know). I switched to guitar support after experiencing some back pain aged 19. Happily I only had it when playing football/running and stoped before it got to bad. I bought an Ergoplay because of Johannes Möller uses one and I am very happy with it. I think that is the one Tatyana uses as well. I actually think its better than foot stole now (without concidering back pain issues). I feel like i have more control over the guitar and it is much more comfortable.

Hello, My name is Mark. Before I comment, if you will allow me, I would like to give you a little information about me so that you may understand my perspective. I am one of many who play steel string guitar and have been playing for 50 years. I do not presume to imply that I am an accomplished guitarist or a guitarist who plays very well. I am not. I do , however , have a good ear, have studied music theory under a mentor in Nashville, Tennessee. That is to say, I consider myself a mediocre guitarist who loves music and have become interested in learning the classical guitar style as I have always enjoyed listening to classical guitar music when it is well played but have been intimidated by the challenges of the technique involved. This has led me to you and your performances; and also to your instruction and information videos such as the one I am enjoying now on the subject of how different string materials affect the sound quality of the instrument. May I say that I have become a huge fan of yours. I randomly chose to listen to you playing a J.S. Bach piece, although I cannot remember the title at the moment. I will say that I was captivated by your using a certain flow of the passages in a way that was very “appropriate”, if I may use that term, to the piece that gave an overall impression of beautiful melody in addition to an accompanying rhythm. I was hooked. I have watched a number of your informative videos in which you discuss nail shape, flesh and nail contact on the strings, practice skills to strive for, among other topics such the string material’s influence on tonal character. As I said, I am not an accomplished player but I have spent time in the presence of those who are and I do have a good ear for the nuances of the guitar’s sound. I would like to pay you a compliment, not that I presume to be a critic of the art, aside from the fact that you are indeed a favorite guitarist of mine and I enjoy all the works I have heard you perform online, but you are exceptional in your descriptions of the many times nebulous subject of tonal quality. I have heard many, many accomplished players attempt to describe such. Often their attempts fall short for what we hear in the way of subtleties in tone is, at best, extremely difficult to accurately capture in words. Also, I only speak English and the fact that English is not your first language is not lost on me. Your English is spot on in describing these difficult to capture ideas. I gain much knowledge from listening to your teachings and I thank you for making your knowledge available to students such as I. I plan to continue to follow your videos and I plan to contribute to you in my humble appreciation. Perhaps some day before I am too old, I will be able to attend one of your live performances. Even if I am not able to hear one of your live performances, I will always be a fan and enjoy your recordings, and practice following your instruction and inspiration. Thank you!! :)

It sounds like you actually long for the days when you had only one option of cheese 🧀 rather than having many options. Interesting. Having choices instead of no choice is a very good thing, however requires some extra effort and research. I am in Osaka Japan and I just received a classical guitar from a German friend who is moving back home and can not take it with him. His girlfriend is Russian, and she presented the guitar to me after we dropped him off at the airport. Now I am looking to put new strings on it. Thanks for your insights.

Ah Tatyana if only you had been around in Stalin's 3rd 5 year plan, when the women's clothing factory only produced high tension nylon g-strings.

    1. Bad news: You're not going to make a bad-sounding guitar sound good with an expensive set of strings. Likewise, a great-sounding guitar will sound good with most any set of strings. 2. The reality: The vast majority of what you read about strings from manufacturers about their brands is marketing hype. They're in business to make money...are you catching on yet? 3. To do proper A-B comparisons, you must put different brand/type strings on the guitar _at the same time_ and at the same pitch. 4. Use BALL END strings where possible and dispense with that tying nonsense. Of course the purists will tell you that that is an abomination and hurts tone and response, but their claims are likewise nonsense. 5. If you discover that a wound string (especially the 4th string) sounds dead, don't start cussing the string manufacturer, rather check to see if the string has become unraveled where it meets the saddle. The _slightest_ amount of unwinding will deaden the string. Solution: Make sure the saddle top is very rounded, smooth and polished, and put a tiny drop of some sort of lubricant where the string meets the saddle to keep it from binding when tuning it up to pitch. I use a small drop of KY jelly for this, as I buy the stuff in 55-gallon drums...hardee-har-har. 6. Make sure your saddle is _very_ snug in the slot and bottoms out fully. Use some mineral oil (NEVER use plant-based oils on a guitar) to gently remove it if necessary with a pair of flush-end cutters.

dimebag darrell and yngwie malmsteen said similar things that sum this up pretty well and it goes something like, no matter what kind of guitar or amp or strings you have, just start playing and find something that sounds good. if it sounds good to you then build on that and you will sound great no matter what setup you have. no two setups are the exact same, you have to find your own sound

couple of points: we are talking about classical guitars here. I have *never* seen any ball end classical guitar strings and I don't believe any are produced so your point 4 is bollocks. you clearly know sweet fuck all about classical guitars , their strings or their setup. Also the saddle top should not be rounded, It should be angled downward a little (away from the soundhole) so the strings vibrate off one spot. Of course the edge should not be sharp but smoothed slightly. (I have never known a string to become unwound at the saddle. it's just not the place that happens - maybe on electric guitars which I suspect you are talking about. though god knows why as this is a video specifically about classical guitars...)

@@seancassidy4812 fair enough but I know of no classical guitarist that uses ball end strings. I have never seen a classical guitarist using them. and I think it would be hard to find one, we just don't use them, simple as that. They are for metal strings on folk guitars.

Thanks for the detailed response on the matter of strings. I for one really despair when having to do so. A player wants to play...not change strings lol ! Anyway....I always fear the ball end strings will break at the saddle. The pop of a broken string drives me nuts lol ! I will pay more attention to the saddle.....making sure its clear of dust so the strings can have the best vibration.
