These two little amps got some of the finest clean sounds I've gotten to hear, and very nice sounding drive too. I can actually see that doing that even rather high gain stuff. AND an attenuetor that actually works like it's meant to. Judging from the video, these are just brilliant.

I have one of the Mk II and it's amazing clean or screaming on the lead channel. I leave mine on the lead channel with it at 10 and control the sound from the guitar's volume. It'll go from very clean and clear to singing. I swapped the tubes to some good vintage tubes and it sounds even better. My amp tech says it's his favorite amp and recommends Tone King to everyone wanting a boutique amp because of this amp.

I've had two Tone King amps: an Imperial MKII and a Falcon Grande. I eliminated both of them from my collection. Though they have some great tones and the Iron Man II attenuator is terrific, I experienced quality problems that are unacceptable in an amp in the $2,000 price range, among them: the Treble control on the Imperial stopped working when the amp was about 6 months old, and the Falcon Grande had an awful rattle (speaker or cabinet, not sure which) when playing the low E string at any volume higher than about 4 (this when the amp was brand new, right out of the box). Also, I had purchased these amps in pursuit of something with a lot of clean headroom. In my experience, and contrary to conventional wisdom on Tone Kings, neither of these amps came anywhere close to filling that space: they both started into a natural tube breakup anywhere north of about 3 on the volume control (and this with a Telecaster and a Stratocaster). A beautiful natural overdriven tone, to be sure, but that certainly didn't match the marketing on these amps and was not what I was seeking.

They both sound amazing! I'm in the market for something new and I've been considering the Imperial, using the clean sound, an overdriven rhythm and a pedal or two in front for leads. When you do a fair number of function gigs and you need to get a variety of sounds you need something versatile with a good clean sound. I get the impression from what Mick & Pete were saying at the end that this wouldn't be the best amp for that? Ie that putting pedals in front of it wouldn't be the best use for it?

I have an Imperial Mk II and a Sky King, both with the Ironman II attenuator. For most places I run the attenuation one stop down from full volume to avoid ear fatigue on stage and in the audience. Full volume is an additional 3db louder, which isn’t a lot but it’s enough to be tiring after a couple hours. And, there’s barely any difference in the sound at that point, except for the volume. I run on the lead channel on full volume, tone and mid-bite at noon, 99% of the time and control my volume from the guitar. All my guitars have treble-bleed caps so they clean up beautifully then scream when I go to to full volume on the guitar. They’re everything I’ve ever wanted in an amp. The amps sound incredible with single-coils and humbuckers. This is a good demo but doesn’t come close to the sound of the amps cranked live when you’re standing in front of them.
