Food for thought! At the next opportunity I should coax my sluggish, ignorant brain into sorting out the ukulele version of this. Meanwhile, I shall express admiration for the sounds and images of the video as well as the painstaking task of systematising these facts and explaining them for the benefit of others. Long live music nerds.

I recently broke away from fret based patterns to associate pattern with the root. This requires that you have to know where each root is. First I learned how to drive from root to root with the pentatonic scale forwards, backwards, vertical, horizontal, diagonal. It becomes like driving a car. Then I fill in the notes to whatever notes I want to play. I don’t think too much in modes anymore but rather what chord I am playing over. Fret based patterns requires you to know two things, the key and the fret. If you know the notes on the guitar and how to drive from root to root in any scale and in every direction it becomes automatic like driving a car. I do use frets when thinking about inversions for example the diminished chord every four frets down the board. I am attempting to improve my chordal understanding using Pat Martino’s Diminished Chord Approach.

Thanks for commenting. Not sure what you're referring to when you use the word "root" ... I suppose you might mean "tonic" ...chords and intervals have roots. Keys and scales (major and minor) have 'tonics' and modes have 'finals' ... This video is about simply mapping the structure of the diatonic keys. It's all about knowing where the notes are in that respect regardless of what you play. This doesn't tell you what to play ... simply a way of seeing where the notes are in each key. I consider key structure essential even when going outside a key or moving from one key to another. The relationships between chords starts out as a 'key-based" idea ... this is where things like ii-V-I come from ... etc ... Not sure what you mean by "fret based patterns" ... but of course you should know the key. Pat Martino's diminished chord method is great! Thanks again ... take care.

Thanks for directing me to this video. It is so clear and concise, what an eye opener! As I said I am a bassists and for us there is another axis on the vii, no boomerangs. There is so much that became clearer. This is fretboard mapping and diatonic gold. I am truly looking forward to the modes. And also your insights on the melodic and harmonic minor, maybe. 👍🏾

@dawnnwilliams2946, Glad you like this video. Some years ago I started a blog for bass using this method, I've only made a couple of posts on it, but it does include a map which highlights the same basic landmarks on bass (without the 3rd rail of course) and with the additional 'axis' position ... bassfretography.blogspot.com ... you might find it interesting. Let me know.

Yes, thank you I found it quite illuminating. I had missed the second void in my translation to the bass. I practice scales everyday and now I have a new and better way to practice them, as well as mixing them with fretboard navigation. Doors are opening because of you, so thank you and best wishes.
