Guineas vs Snake

The guineas are called over to investigate a chicken-snake. The guineas put some pressure on the snake to get out of their territory. (They have a nest nearby full of eggs.) The snake was not harmed; No eggs were stolen from the guinea nest. Good job, guineas!

Then one year the flock slowly started to thin out until there were no more. We think hawks or coyotes killed them all.

yeah, my own experience is that you have to have a flock big enough that it withstands the attrition. They might have good eyesight and be able to fly high up into trees, but predators still get them pretty easily if there aren't enough of them to keep up the population.

But when I got closer I saw it was about a three to four-foot alligator in my driveway! Our guineas sleep in the top of our peach tree at night, feed themselves in the summer, but fed some oats in the winter. They raise their own young without any interference from us. We get to enjoy less bad bugs (flea/tick/worm larva/june bugs/Japanese beetles. ) I can't imagine our farm without them.

They did an amazing job at keeping the ticks away. We lost the last guinea 3 years ago, the the tick count finally started going back to normal last summer. I need to get some more. They also survived in the wild without any care for about 8 years and raised their own babies, until wild pigs came into the area and made ground nesting impossible. We only bought baby guineas once and got 8 years of tick protection.

Our guineas aren't that friendly. We did have a wave of predators in the fall, eagle, horned owl, and fox. We are down to just 2 adults guineas. These have been living independent raising their own for 5 years now, with just an occasional feeding. I was worried they were going to go extinct, but I think they have a nest now. So, there's hope. We had 11 adults in the fall.

They love to eat ticks and fleas or follow me when I cut the grass to eat the little bugs and tiny grasshoppers that just out. They are excellent for tick control. We hardly have any near our house and our livestock have less fleas since we added guineas. I think they make the goats have less worms too, by eating the worms in their larval state. I love guineas. The wild pig have just found our area are making it hard to nest on the ground anymore.
