Parrot Paradise Yes! My aunt has a flock of (pet) ducks and two guinea fowl to alarm them to bobcats, coyotes, ocelots, mountain lions, ocelots, jaguars, wolves, bears and snakes! They live in the country near forest and mountain terrain so there are many predators but fortunately only smaller ones visit during certain seasons. Still, the threat is always there. The ducks and other birds are able to take shelter should a predator arrive and the guinea fowl sound their alarm !

I remember that when I was a child my grandmother had many of these birds. They are very interesting for several reasons: They all lay eggs in a single nest and they don’t hatch their eggs, so my grandmother took them and placed them to the chickens when they were hatching eggs, the chicken would raise them as her own chicks...

I miss my guineas. Mine a soft songbird like sound when not squawking. They’re keeping in touch with each other. When I gardened they would stand and wait for me to finish planting, all the time making this soft whistling sound that was inquisitive. They were asking “Is this human safe? If this human moves we’ll take off, but if not, we’ll wait and rummage for bugs after it moves on.”

Oh god this brought back memories. So a few years ago, a stray Guinea rooster made his way to our yard. We had no idea where he came from and no one ever came looking for him, so he hung out in our neighborhood for a while. Every morning. Every morning at exactly 7:00 am. He would hop on the chain link fence and crow at the top of his lungs. While I was trying to sleep. I adored him, but it was suffering for a while until he was caught by a family friend, and went to live a good long life on their farm.

We have a couple of guinea hens that showed up on our property a few weeks ago . I don't know where they came from... unless they came from one of the farms near by . Maybe someone let out here . I was afraid our cat or the 3 dogs would hurt them , but so far they haven't. Thank God ...!! They are so funny !! We got them some corn to feed them and this morning I gave them some pumpkin, because we carved pumpkin for Halloween last night . I hope that's okay for them to eat pumpkin .

I've heard they generally ignore corn. They eat insects, simple grain sometimes, grass, ticks, spiders, mice, and occasionally snakes. Most important thing to put out for them is fresh water, grit (for the gizzard), and a sheltered area so they can warm up in the winter if it gets down below 40°F in the winter in your region.
