Localizada no norte de Portugal, a cidade de Guimarães é considerada o berço da nação portuguesa. Lá nasceu D. Afonso Henriques, que em 1128, enfrenta e vence as forças leais a sua mãe, conquista a fortificação e posteriormente inicia uma campanha militar, unificando as terras que irá dar origem ao que hoje é Portugal. É reconhecido como o primeiro Rei de Portugal. O Palácio, por sua vez, foi mandado construir pelo primeiro Duque de Bragança, no século XV. A 13 de Dezembro de 2001, o Comité do Património Mundial, na sua 25.ª sessão, inscreveu o Centro Histórico de Guimarães, na Lista do Património Mundial da UNESCO.
Located in the north of Portugal, the city of Guimarães is considered the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. D. Afonso Henriques was born here. In 1128, he faced and defeated the forces loyal to his mother, conquered the fortification and later began a military campaign, unifying the lands that would give rise to what is now Portugal. He is recognized as the first King of Portugal. The Palace, was built by the first Duke of Bragança, in the 15th century. On December 13, 2001, the World Heritage Committee, in its 25th session, inscribed the Historic Center of Guimarães on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
