It brings back so many memories. I was born and grew up in Pretoria. I studied at the Pretoria Onderwyskollege to become a teacher. The students believed that if we walk under the Jacaranda trees in October and a flower falls on your head, you would pass your year-end exams. It was such fun being a student in the late sixties!

Makes me homesick watching this, but a spring in my heart at the memories of the views, I grew in Arcadia, a stones throw from Loftus. Thank you for showing it.

Thank you so much for this video!! I did my general nursing training in Pretoria at the Andrew McColm hospital and midwifery at the Old Moedersbond! I moved to Sweden in 1986 but my roots are still strong as I grew up in mining communities on the Rand and near Witbank. ♡

Born and raised in the suburb of Rietfontein. Now in the rainy UK. Such fond memories. Had some really good times in Hatfield square. Remember when Sunnyside was still an awsome place....

Nice video, Shannon... I'm British but love South Africa, its history, landscape etc. Yes, troubled at times, but what nation hasn't been, in its formation, etc? Even though the Boers gave we Brits a pasting as well as the Zulus, funnily enough, this made me want to learn more about South Africa. wonderful place, I hope it can one day sort out the problems it wants to.

For many of us - I´m sure - Pretoria will always be Pretoria ! A pleasant and colorful city, founded by Voortrekkers in 1855 ! Changing its name really makes no sense for reasonable people ... Although cosmopolitan, its genuine character is Afrikaans, and so it should be kept in the Future, no matter the political trends ...

What genuine character precisely? You should have said "For many of us [white afrikaans] people , the city will always be pretoria." I prefer the name Tshwane and it's what's going to be in the future. This is not Holland, if you want a genuine 'afrikaans' character holland is the place you should look at. We are in AFRICA. Always bear in mind that also.

I have lived in Pretoria all my life, and this city (like most cities in the new South Africa) has gone downhill very, very badly. Insane crime levels, filth & poverty everywhere, rampant unemployment, beggars at every turn. Not to mention the fact that there is basically ZERO to do in Gauteng at all. An utterly, utterly boring place that gets more boring by the day. The footage of Fountains Circle at the end of the video implies that you can get out to view Pretoria from there. The truth is, that is one of the worst hot-spots for crime and hijacking in the country. And, its all only getting worse.

Its name will eventually change to reflect the country it is in. [Btw we are not in some european colonial outpost] You can still learn about the history of your people where it matters, not so much now. Everything that does not reflect the heritage and history of the people of this place or this continent at large should not be prominent in the city and gradually we will get there.
