Guided Reading | How to conduct a Word Work lesson during a Guided Reading Group

Conducting a word work lesson during your guided reading groups gives you the opportunity to see your students manipulating sounds in words, showing their ability to blend phonemes together, and focus on auditory listening skills as well.

Great video, Anna. For my kiddos I first isolate each sound so they are conscious of the number of sounds in each word. i.e. b-r-ai-n. Then I have them blend the first two consonants. br-ai-n. This helps with spelling and also with sounding out unknown words independently. Marsha

I totally agree Marsha. I always segment each sound during the first half of the school year. But now that's it's the end of the school year and we have already worked on blends and vowel teams we blend parts of the word together.

Could you have THEM decide what letters to change? (Ex: "Use 4 letters to spell RAIN. Add one letter and turn RAIN into TRAIN. Change one letter to turn TRAIN into TRAIL..." ) That is how Patricia Cunningham explains it in Phonics They Use, and seems to demand more thinking on the part of students.

Curious why prior to the word "paper" you blended each sound, i.e. for pay you sounded out /p/ and /ay/ then blended /pay/, but for paper you didn't sound out each phoneme. This video is very helpful.

Hi Anna! I am new to your channel but I am loving your videos and I am learning a ton! I was wondering if you can clarify some things. In your lesson plan video you said you teach M-W guided reading and Th-F close reading. Your guided reading templates and videos for early, transitional, and fluent readers show word work as being a quick 2-3 minutes of your group. When would you conduct this word work minilesson since it takes much longer than 3 minutes? Also, in your freebies and a separate video you mention you focus on word work and sight words on Mondays, then read/comprehension strategies throughout the rest of the week. Since this schedule is different than the guided reading templates, when would we focus on word work as a full guided reading lesson like in this word work video, versus a quick 2-3 minutes? I teach 2nd grade if that helps. I am trying to figure out a good schedule to start next year confidently. Thank you in advance! :)

Hello Anna! I'm new to your channel. I have really enjoyed everything I've watched. You are an excellent teacher! I was wondering two things...first, do you do WTW and do you do Whole Brain Teaching? Thank you so much. 😊

Hi Anna, I am following your guided reading schedule and structure but I have a question. You have three or four different reading groups depending on their abilities. Do you do the same Word work lesson with each group each Monday, or do you do something different with each group? Thanks for your help.

Hey there Cynthia, so sorry for the delay, Yes.. I do the same word work for each group because it aligns with my spelling/phonics skill for the week and all of my students take the same spelling test. Hope that helps :)
