Sounds like my sewing journey! Started off with bare minimum and low end Singer and it was just enough to get me started and to the point where I figured out what I wanted. But I always tell people, start off with something hard. Totally start with your dream garment! That's what I did and it was so awful, but I did it! I sewed my dream garment! It was just really motivating.

Same! The second garment I ever made was a pair of pants (pattern from KZread) AND I LOVED IT ❤ I still wear it. Is it structurally sound? Absolutely not. Did it take me forever and a bit of crying? You bet. But I learned so much along the way, I made it and I'm still incredibly proud of it. Never made a pillowcase like, ever haha

Great tips ! My two cents as a sewing teacher: Step 2: A lot of dollar store scissors are awesome for beginners. Step 3: practice not forgetting to put your sewing foot down before sewing and then get thread nests !!! Step 4: a skirt is also an easy first pattern. Step 5: Do a muslin first ! Especially if your fabric is vintage… I learned the hard way.

I am a 54 year old man that was gifted a singer heavy duty classic 4 months ago. I watched videos for about a 7 days before buying fabric and a pattern. Every beginner video for beginners said to start slow with practice and simple and blah blah blah. I have done metal work, wood crafting (custom cabinetry, furniture) and such, and saw that sewing is simply engineering with cloth. I purchased 3.5 yards of material, a few other sewing tools, and thread. I made mistakes, I corrected them, and a month later, wore a custom made dress shirt to my nieces wedding. She has been sewing for 14 years, and recently graduated with a degree in fashion and design. When she saw my simple first attempt shirt, she was astonished to say the least. I nailed that shirt and as a result I wanted to say the following... You, I , and everyone else do not need to start small. If you want it bad enough...go do it and do not fear failure. Replace the failure with a desire to succeed and you will. Starting small is for the meek. See it, know it, and do it.

Great advice! I never went bougie. The most expensive sewing machine I bought was $500. I started sewing young with my mom and grandma. In about five or six years I was able to make a suit for interviews. College was almost over. This was back in the 80s. I sewed for my children, the kids at school, mother of the bride dress...thought I'd seen it all until I discovered altered couture. One thing to remember is to not force the fabric in the machine or hold it down too hard...let it take it. Good luck everyone! It's a great hobby to have your own original.

A tip from a person who didn’t have the internet nor a class to learn how to sew… you need to be real with yourself. You need patience. Lots and lots of patience. Patience to tear things apart and start again perhaps more than once. If you have the attention of a gnat or just tend to give up things after the first time because it’s not perfect, then don’t try. You’ll spend time and money be very unhappy. Also spend the time and create what is called a toile or a mock up. It’s worth the time especially if you’re trying a new step like buttons, darts, zippers with hidden panels, top stitching, etc. also she forgot one very important thing. An iron. Doesn’t haven’t to be an expensive one. You need to get use to sewing seams and then ironing them open or to the back or whatever the pattern indicates. That’s one trick to help your homemade clothes from looking, well, homemade.

However my vintage Singer is my favorite machine and the one I use mostly b/c it will sew anything or almost anything. I actually inherited the new machines from family members when they passed. Some of them were only a year old and never been used.

As for the scissors, be sure that if you do spend the $ on a good pair of scissors, they are only used to cut fabric. If you start to use them for paper, plastic, what have you, they will never cut your fabric the same. I cant tell you how many times my kids used my good sewing scissors ( and my wallpaper scissors) for random stuff and i had to go buy new ones. Because, even if you have them sharpened, they still dont cut the same.

For me there is something to be said about getting a machine that will be reliable and not need adjusted or fixed every time you sew on it. For a very long time I had a antique singer that was great when it was working but I had to deconstruct it and fix it constantly and then I got a used “modern” brother machine that was the same way. A few months ago finally got a machine that works and it has made sewing so much more enjoyable. I can finish a project so quickly when I’m not fixing the machine all the time. So at least spend enough money to get a machine that will be reliable so you don’t burn out from fixing it constantly.

I agree. I have a fancy sewing machine that I bought from an estate, however, it was still a lot of money. Had that one not come available, I think I would’ve spent about $1500 on a machine just so I can have a machine capable enough to handle everything I might want to attempt, within reason. It’s definitely nice not having to do much to the machine, and the features are awesome.

My adult kids and I were planning to have a little family vacation last year for June, which included a weekend renn fest. Growing up, I'd always made Halloween costumes by hand so I offered to make some simple Renn fest costumes. They were asking for more complicated things and I offhand said "I could do that, but I'll never get it done by hand-sewing in time; I'd need a sewing machine." Sure enough, Mother's Day, I was gifted a sewing machine lol. I hadn't used one since using my moms as a child so I played with it and practiced by making costumes, hemming things, making some simple stocking stuffers like pouches and arm warmers. Now I'm starting to sew myself a new wardrobe this year. I narrowed it down by deciding to sew a couple things for spring/summer, the upcoming season. I guess when summer hits I'll make something for fall, and then winter. And every year I'll just build on it. This video gives some good advice.

Lovely look on you in this vid! ❤ I'm the type of person that changes focus often, so I've been a beginner at sewing for a few years as I do just one or two small projects a year (with other crafts in between). But this advice is great for other crafts, too! I got a few cheap crochet and embroidery bits for Christmas, and have been able to try both out (I suck atm, lol) without spending unnecessarily. Definitely love the idea of redoing that first project. One of my early projects was turning trousers into dungaree shorts. They weren't great, so I'd definitely do better with the next attempt. Great tips! 👍
