Skidding is fun. It’s probably why you wanted to get into fixed gears because you watched MashSF and Macaframa. Here's your Guide to Skidding on a Fixed Gear.
The lower your gearing is, the easier it will be to skid. You can learn how to skid on whatever ratio you already have, but if you can, gear down to learn how to skid.
Skid patches are the locations on your rear tire your gearing allows you to perform a skid. Skidding will burn through your tires like nothing else. More skid patches will extend the life of your rear tire, so you can save money in the long run and skid for longer. Get a bunch of cheap tires because you will be trashing tires.
Foot retention is almost necessary for skidding. It’s possible to skid without it, but I can’t even skid without foot retention. If you want to learn fast, foot retention will help you get there.
Before the actual skid, there’s the setup. The easiest setup is the “ballz to stem” method where as you can clearly see, the rider’s testicles, in most cases, are put towards the stem.
To perform a skid, you have to lock up your rear wheel by pulling up on the forward pedal and pushing down on the rear pedal.
Practice, practice, practice. Everyone learns at different rates. Don’t get discouraged if you can’t skid and if you don’t feel like you’re making any progress. For me, there was a point where I couldn’t lock the rear wheel no matter how hard I tried, and then I hit the tipping point. Soon after that, I was whipping out skids at every stop like a true Fixie Foo.

What are your tips that'll help people learn to skid on a fixed gear? Let me know!

Columbia SC Biker yep just piggy backing and simplifying some ratios have different skid patches if you skid left foot forward vs right foot forward so learning both can help extend your tire life. It’s also good to learn both feet because if you’re in a bind and your opposite foot is in the front and you use the pull technique for example you’ll end up having less time to stop (that’s if you ride brakeless) it’s also just good to learn both ways and feet it helps with bike control

You should also increase your tire pressure to the maximum recommended psi in the rear for less grip.
for bonus points try pedalling backwards to spin the wheel in the opposite direction. Looks dope and is easier than you'd think

@@palicar i skid by a small lever on my right hand
You taught me how to skid Bro!! Bought my first track bike 3 weeks ... an old skool Fuji. Took about 4 days to find a rhythm and now i'm skidding like a boss!!
More tire pressure makes it easier to skid as well. The less pressure the more tire surface is on the ground. The more tire pressure the less tire surface on the ground. On a physical brake bike more tire surface equals more grip, thus harder braking. But skidding is a problem because the the tire will cause the wheel to want to roll farther causing more opposing force to cause the tire to break loose and skid. More pressure and the tires grip failure point is lower, requiring less opposing pressure to cause the tire to break loose or loose adhesion.
Maybe it's just me, but when I was a teen riding fixed, skidding was just natural by using the push method. And it didn't require putting your genitals on the bike neck. Skidded standing up or sitting down. Especially around sand! Skidded so well it was nothing to do a 180 for a quick stop and turn around. Ahh, the days....................

Zach you are the best man. I've been riding fixed gear for a year now and I have improved on some sick speed and use a front brake. I have not tried to skid, but am now; thanks for the tutorial. I've watched others but your second method will work for me I just know it. next is to upgrade on my bike. #BestBikeguruever!!!
Good stuff, thanks for posting, getting my first fixed bike this coming Saturday.
Major improvements on the audio quality. Good work Zach. Loved the disclaimer.

I learned how to skid (longer) with 52-17 by doing the hopskid. It gives me more leverage to push down the cranks while horizontal and keeping myself on the saddle. Skidding while riding the toptube/ball2stem is dangerous for me since you have the weight infront which means... longer stopping time.. so I just sit down on my saddle to keep my whole weight on the rear and it's a plus for fixie points
well when i was introduced to fixed gear riding, i learned how to skid using pull and push at the same time, seemed easier! Also having some angle when you initiate kinda helps!
Thank you Zach.. very clear demonstrations...
"the riders testicles in *MOST CASES* " THAT LINE GOT ME DYING 🤣🤣🤣
Get a footstraps on platform ( BMX ) pedals, they offer way better support than road Pedals with Toe Clip. Jump a little, slightly to lift and twist rear wheel.
Very good tutorial. i watched this went down to my carpark and i started skidding in less then an hour . hope i can master is and also skid my wheel to the left and right
thank you for this! about to learn how to skid, this is massively helpful!
Been skidding for years now it’s so fun people recording me lol man I recently got back to riding track bikes man I already got use to it 4 days I’ve done around 60 miles
When I try to skid it's like impossible to stop the wheel I think my hearing might be too heavy like it's very hard to pedal and definitely impossible to Skid do you think that I should just get a new back wheel I've been trying for a really long time to skid and I just can't get it I really feel like the wheel Deering might be too heavy for me or something I don't know any tips
I took me a long time to skid cause I ride a gear ratio of 53-13. Got another Fixedgear at 53-15. Do t skid much cause I don't wanna burn through tires to quick. I can't use toe clips or clipless systems cause it will pop or brake. So straps have been my favorite and are the best for my gear ratio. Thanks for all the advice and tips. You have opened a new world of cycling for me. Not many fixed riders here in Tampa FL..They say I'm crazy but I go with what you say and that's what's comfortable for me. 🌀

Sir, can you do a video how to get the right frame size on fixgear
No love for Gatorskins? I'm a victim of unclipping during a skid. Still have the scars. It was kinda my fault, as I was new to clipless pedals and didn't have the tension on my M520 pedals high enough. Since tightening them higher, I have yet to accidentally unclip during skids. Once you go clipless, you never go back... even with the blood and scars, though I will say platform pedals and Holdfast straps served me well for years skidding. I run a 47/16 and 47/19 ratios and get 32 and 38 skid patched respectively. That includes ambidextrous skid patches.
I love this video about skidding
That's crazy that i recognized where you were riding your bike. It's the place in Elk Grove with the flaming grill place around there.
Hi everyone! I'm practicing how to skid, but the problem is my chain often falling down. Do you mind helping me out of this case? Thank you

What's the chainring with the silver sugino 75's?
what size of the tire is better for skidding?
Thx for the tip, learnt how to skid longer
3 days ago while I was riding I couldn’t stop in time because I took off the brakes and went flying off my bike. I had to get stitches in my face
Great vid. Now someone needs to make a good whip skid tutorial video. There’s none around!
After I past the point that Zack said, I manage to skid with the dominant foot, back, or front, but back feels more natural and less fatigue for the feet(and knees) Skid is totally useless if you have brakes just like me, but also the reason that I love my fixed, and somehow even if I can skid with the rear brake, doing it with the feet, is a new world I use 46x19 with 23c tyres, which makes it easier
Do I need straps to skid or break?
Hey Zach, i always wanted to get into riding a fixed gear bike but the one thing i hear from some of my friends that skidding can damage your joints in your legs (knee joints mainly) from skidding. So i was just asuming that getting hand breaks would help out, but my friends made fun of me for saying that, since it defeats the purpose of riding a fixed gear bike. What's your word of advise regarding that. Thanks.
Why can’t I skid every time I try my pedals just go down and it sounds bad then I makes me keep pedaling how do I skid or fix my bike I need help
is skidding better than breaking? the tires are slowing down a lot
Well dammit... I took everyone else's skid advice and fully ended my season on Monday. Totally forgot the balls-to-stem tech and tried the rocket-to-pavement technique. Do not recommed. RIP collar bone. Thanks for the new video Zach, I'll give it another shot in September...
hello im planning to buy a bike but dont know which one should i get.. for a newbie like me would you recommend a good brand like cinelli?
My fixie is tough to skid i cant control to pull the pedals up. Maybe the chain is too tight?
I’m a beginner skidding on a 54/17 gearing and I’m doing fine
My cog is for high speed and my lightweight ass needs a very small amount of back break pressure to do it. But only a touch of breaks and then quickly release. Unless it’s snowing and slippery, then I can skid without breaks :D
Life Changing
Keep straining my left hip flexor when pulling up is that normal?
Can you make a video on how to make a fixed gear bike step by step pls
The weather is shit today and i have ridden my bike literally everywhere within a 20km radius, so idk where to go
A compilation of brakeless stopping methods would be nice.
Great content. Thank you! Skid patches: At first I was picturing them evenly distributed 360 degrees around the tire, but they'd only be distributed across a section of the tire (noob alert). I guess I need to practice changing the angle of my cranks when skidding so I'm not skidding on the same part every time. I'm running 46/16 and I might have about half of the tire for skidding -- I marked the tire w/ chalk to check.

You have 8 skid patches. Odd number cog will increase skid patches. 46/16 = 23/8.
I love my tires. I run GP4000IIs on my road bike. And I live in a place where it snows and tires skid when you least want them to. I would never ever intentionally skid a tire.

just change the rear cog or just buy fixie wheel set... (sorry bad english)
That is a beautiful bike. What’s the specs?
Hmm, is it physically possible to skid by rotating the wheel in the backward direction (backpedaling) instead of stopping the cranks's rotation (skidding) such that your feet are backpedaling (moving in reverse)? Or would it take sick leg strength to even think about it? HAHAHSHA
but why do I have this loud clicking noise on my mtb? oh and I do not stop at all no matter if I push down..
When i skid on my fixie i can feel my pedals or crank? slipping it could be the loose cog but when my friend saw me skid, he said my rear wheel bends please if someone knows something about this, please let me know!

Try checking the cone nuts on your wheel's axle. Grab the rim and wiggle side to side and see if it has any play. If it wiggles, you need to tighted the axle a little. Also, wheck your chain tension and make sure it's not too loose. I hope this helps!
Nice video

cycling shorts are shit, unless you spend about $80+. if youre willing to spend that much they are sooo worth it. Cheap shammies are often adding no more comfort or actually make riding less comfortable.

Don't judge me, but when I wanted to learn to skid, I reasoned it must be similar to drifting in a car. I eventually got good at the lift or pull method but for awhile, I would literally try to skid by turning sharply and pedaling as hard and fast as I could to try to simulate wheelspin in a car or motorcycle. It worked for awhile, especially on wet pavement.

lmao i actually love this video. but people gotta realize that fixed gear riding is full of opinions on how things should be done. If Zach's videos don't help then don't watch, if you think differently then be respectful. (unless you out here trolling lol. Have at it cause i love trolls) but still, its all opinion. i rode lipless, box with straps, toe clips and yadda yadda but i found what works for me
So what is a bar skid? Footage wanted!))
That godandfamous Benadryl water bottle tho!!
Two things it’s obviously better to learn to skid with both feet just to get more bike control and if you ride brakeless learn to skid while sitting or with your weight over the seat/more over your rear wheel it’ll be harder to initiate at first but it’ll actually help you stop relatively effectively

Why is it that when o skit it just makes mu bike jump... and also can sjitting brake the crank or the rotating thing inside the crank
@Daniel__Something
5 жыл бұрын
if you're bike is jumping it means there's not enough force necessary to hold the rotation of the wheel for a skid. start by applying more force through your pedals and stiffen your upper body a bit to lock in. also holding your weight more towards the front of the bike helps to learn but its a bad habit to keep. Now the cranks.... as a mechanic i have seen many crank arms broken but it can happen for any reason. just don't buy cheap components and you'll be fine
I first Learned by watching others and noticed how Smoove they moved and So Fluid in traffic. I rode a single gear MTN bk and never stopped pedaling using the brakes and peddling into a stop. Until one day??? BOOM FIXIE CLIPLESS NO BRAKES 4EVA
