Guide to Fishing Pymatuning Reservoir in Pennsylvania

Спорт

My goal with this video is to help you all find and catch more fish on Pymatuning Reservoir. I provide basic information about the lake such as size, water depth, forage, structure and fish species. We also get into an in-depth conversation about several hot spots from the north end to the south end of the lake. I talk about the species in these locations and provide tips on how you can catch them. This is a true lake breakdown that will hopefully help you guys catch more fish.

Ryan, I really appreciate your videos. In this COVID lock-down winter, all I can focus on is getting out there to fish. I am contemplating putting an electric trolling motor on my kayak and am targeting some new approaches on Pymatuning, Lake Arthur, Glendale, and Cross Creek County Park (near home for me). Thanks for your detailed advice. Into my seventh decade, I am still learning. Peace, brother.

However, I learned a lot about this lake and will try different area now that I see the bigger picture and maybe try fishing catfish. Thanks!

Awesome break down of Pymatuning lake. You hit on all the major spots of the lake. I fish in and around stocker island. I live just up from Snodgrass launch. There is a real shallow point just south of that launch that produce just about any if the species. I just picked up a nice eye there fishing for channel cats. I posted a short video of it. Great video! I wish I could find one of these for every lake I fish! So me and a buddy fished there the spring of 2019, launching out of the Jamestown boat ramp and fishing down south all around ackerman island and a lot of the coves on the west side of the lake (down south). We did o.k., catching maybe 10 bass apiece each day (all on top water, whopper ploppers), but nothing to write home about. We are headed up the first weekend of October and i'm wondering if you have any tips for for areas and techniques for this time of year. I don't usually go out of my home waters this late in the season, but with this covid stuff, I haven't been able to take my normal summer trips. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep the video's coming!!

I plan on heading to ice fish the lake for the first time this season, focusing on Walleye off of Ackerman (setting up on the edge of the river channel) or the humps just north of Jamestown campground point. (setting tip ups with minnows just off the bottom) Can you recommend any pointers/spots for ice fishing the lake? Thanks!

Patrick Finnegan , hey man thanks for the comment, glad you like the videos! I’m looking to get into ice fishing this season, so I am not real knowledgeable when it comes to setting up. Those fish may setup in the channels though so I’m thinking you got the right idea! Dead sticking minnows or cut bait seems to be solid options and the tip ups should produce fish. I would try to focus on the structure points like humps too. Let me see what I can find, I’ll ask around for you and get back to ya!

Summer fishing is tough, fish move deeper, I would focus on main lake points and vertical jig. I did alright on the perch and crappie last year off of lake points in deeper water, using harnesses and worms. Wind drift drops off those points may help. Otherwise I find myself beating the shoreline for bluegills lol you can always fish early and late when the fish move back shallow too.

That’s awesome! It’s really tough for me to pick one spot but I’d stay in the north end of the lake and look for shallow bays next to deep water. Always fish your structure like humps and flooded timber. I usually go with a 6 inch grandmas or Wiley’s 5 1/2. I would fish those shallow bays and maybe the weed edges in the adjacent deeper water. You can always vertical jig too...

So I watched your video in the car with boat in tow this morning. We set in about 7am and fished the north section, west of Clark Island, We really didnt go that far down past the sailing club. I was using fishbrain (the app) and Navionics. I was the only one out of three that caught any fish. First catch was a 6 inch perch. Then I started to catch Catfish (all using a crappie rig with 2 worms) I used spinner baits, weedless jigs, crankbaits, floating frogs, stickbaits, Erie Dearies with worm and without. Only thing we got hits on were crappie rigs and I caught about 6 decent sized catfish. Everyone else got nothing. Torwards the end I got a white bass (small 5 incher) So is there some kind of seasonal difference here? We got there as the sun came up and we were the ONLY people on the lake. Come 9:30 there were pontoon boats fishing with bobbers (we think). Would love to get some bass and some muskie but.. boy the water is super murky and Im just not convinced? Any thoughts? Maybe we are fishing in the wrong month? i am starting to believe that might be the issue.

There are a few coves up that way with Lilly pads , you will find bass in there for sure. You could head south and find the stumps and try that as well for bass. Guys have been getting muskies all over the lake, if you wanna catch a musky you gotta fish for musky , I’m talking full on trolling gear , running baits where the baitfish are in the column, grinding all day for that bite window. I was out on Chautauqua today and got blanked...

Yeah man, you can still catch them up there they are just deeper. Depending on the thermocline , you may be able to find them suspended. If not try bottom bouncers with harnesses in deeper water. I fished late June last year and we found a few fish in 25ft , but it varies. I think it’s sometimes a chess board trying to figure out where they are at in the deeper water. If you mark fish at 15ft suspended, run your baits at that depth and see, otherwise depending on the thermocline you may need to go off the bottom. So many variables it’s hard to say sometimes...

  • @FishingPAwithRyanRead

    5 жыл бұрын

Hey Hank, the best lakes that PA has for Small-mouth are Lake Wallenpaupack and Lake Erie. However, i feel as though that the rivers here in PA hold the best numbers and biggest Smallies that you will find. I would mention the Allegheny River, Clarion River, French Creek, Youghiogheny River and the mighty Susquehanna River. I think our state record is 8 lbs and 8 oz. I usually do not target Small-mouth however on occasion i will on days that are few and far between. The biggest Small-mouth that i caught was around 4 lbs, and when i catch them, i usually get them around 1-2 lbs. When we go on vacation to Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, i usually catch more Smallies than anything. I know that some of the waters i mentioned hold 5-8 lb fish and especially Lake Erie. You can get out on Erie and just smack them certain times of the year. Hopefully i answered your question!

I had a day last year I caught 9 smallmouth in a few hours between 16 and 19.5 inches long. Off the shore.

You have a few options , you can go out to 13-15 feet of water and put on a bottom bouncer with the harness or you can simply put a few split shots on to get the harnesses down, just wind drift and see what happens!

  • @FishingPAwithRyanRead

Catfish will eat harnesses too , or you can go with minnows on a size 2 or 4 hook with some weight and drag it on the bottom wind drifting.

At pymatuning? That’s a good question I would tell you just about anywhere , the spillway is illegal but you may wanna check the regs out and see how close you can fish to it , thats a high percentage area lol other than that there’s Carp all over the lake ...

Brian, Fish right beside the spillway where you are permitted. Use 🍞 bread. If you really want to have fun use an ultralight and set your drag. I used to do it for years up there when I had a camp up there. I miss it😁 Good Luck and happy fishing.👍🏻

Anywhere there is weeds , there’s allot of back coves that are good in the spring , in shallow like 5-8 fow , summer gets tough , sometimes you’ll find them schooled up in deeper water , similar to crappies , fall I think they go shallow again , I don’t ice fish so I’m not sure other than to focus on points,

PECE Mast3r Race , are you fishing Pymatuning or just looking for a spot in general? I would say that allot of the fish move into weeds this time of year just to try to find heat. But the warmer water temps is where you want to start looking now. I like the north end of the lakes in November because they get warmer quicker.
