Most deaths by gun are also suicide. Things can get messed up, but the real issues just aren't being addressed and it's not the guns.

In just the last two months I had two of my 13 year old students witness gun violence in their home. One’s mother is incarcerated and the other’s is dead. Both traumatized, missed tons of school and had so much of their lives uprooted. Now one is in his grandparents’ custody with his biological brother, but his younger half-siblings have been separated from him. The other is in the custody of a sister who was injured herself, just turned 18 and is still in high school. She now has custody of 3 younger siblings and is terrified that the youngest with a different dad will be taken away. She now doesn’t get to go out and live her life because she has to care for her siblings. I’ve spent the year terrified of school shootings and am glad the school year is coming to a close. My door doesn’t even lock and the whole entrance is glass. We’ve tried multiple drills and we wouldn’t stand a chance.

As a Canadian, I just can’t even imagine this as a reality. I know it is their reality and for that I’m so sorry. I have known of targeted gun violence to exist in my neighbourhood and around here but have personally never been a witness. I couldn’t imagine what it must be like to be an American and experience these things. I was just talking about a recent mass shooting in the US with my work colleague (a Brit) and he told me police don’t even carry guns in the UK, so to them this is unimaginable too. I know many family members who advocate for guns and for “looser gun restrictions” in Canada, and I just can’t wrap my head around how you can hear a kid talk about her experience being shot at school and think that’s a good idea to do. I cry thinking about the kids who have lost their lives to gun violence because what if that was my daughter? What if that was me and my daughter lost her mom that way? It’s just so heartbreaking to me.

This episode was very well done. Everyone was so respectful of each other. One thing I noticed though was that it was a common assumption that if the victim wasn’t involved with drugs, or violent upbringings - that they must not have been shot. It really shows the victim blaming complex is so deep seeded, even within incredibly respectful people.

First of all, I love that Cut videos seem to have gotten longer again recently instead of the 5 minute best of edits and I appreciate it. Especially of course on heavier topics like this. I liked all three guessers, they really were the right persons to talk about this but I always love to see Raymond and V. Just the love for people and appreciation of life. It's sad that many need to go through horrible stuff to find the good in themselves and appreciation for life because of how quickly and senselessly it can end but I'm glad for anybody who turns their life around. And yeah, everybody could do with some therapy. We all have stuff to unpack and work through, even if we aren't aware of it right now. And it's really different than talking to a good friend or family member.
