  • @timsamong

    6 ай бұрын

    I feel like instead of height, it probably depends on age and maturity, like even if you're short, you could still handle a 4/4 cello as long as your hands are big enough, like children are usually given smaller sized instruments because a bigger one would be too heavy to handle and their body isn't proportionally designed for the intonation of a 4/4 cello as it would throw her off when they grow. Also, smaller instruments I think tend to have a harder time at resonating.

    She should have said she plays a 7/8. Many smaller stature cellists play a 7/8 even as an adult. I believe there are even a few professional soloists who use a 7/8! That would have been very believable.

    "Who confuses vibrato with tremolo?" That's easy: electric guitarists, thanks to Fender. Fender put a vibrato bar on the first Stratocaster but called it a tremolo bar. They put a tremolo effect in many of their amps but called it vibrato. The electric guitar world never recovered.

  • @molekyyli

    Haha, yes, ”never recovered”. I know one luthier (electric guitars) who is so annoyed by this that he does call trems vibrato bridges. I can’t recall myself ever be confused about these two…

    Hello! Cellist here, didn't see anyone else respond with this info on a quick scroll (but like, I haven't read all 200 comments so maybe someone has): For people who are smaller or just have smaller hands, there are professional 7/8 cellos (sometimes called "ladies cello", though I strongly disfavour that term), and professional cellists who play them. They can sound absolutely excellent-it's not so small that you can't make one that sounds good. There are also short-scale 4/4 cellos, which just have a shorter string scale length (nut to bridge length), which can help with smaller hands. 3/4 doesn't seem impossible but very unlikely-you're getting into the size vs. sound/resonance tradeoff most people know about with fractional instruments. Although you can get good quality _student_ 3/4 cellos, I don't ever remembering hearing of anyone making intermediate or professional instruments (unless someone exceptionally had one custom-made to that size-I could certainly see a professional of _exceptionally_ small stature deciding to do this.) And for clefs, we definitely do not read alto clef. I occasional struggle with alto clef writing viola parts when composing/arranging, but cello music is always bass, tenor or treble clef.

  • @caterscarrots3407

    @caterscarrots3407

    Yeah. The only time I've ever seen a clef outside of bass, tenor, and treble for cello, is in a Bach cello suite(and not the super well known one just to be clear, I think it's no. 6 if I remember correctly that has that use of soprano clef). But certainly nothing after Bach uses clefs outside of bass, tenor, and treble.

    As a piano student, I can tell from round 1 that the supposed pianist is not a pianist. We would never have our fingers stretched straight like that, even when pretending to play. For us it's just nature to have our fingers curled up, the tip pointing towards the ground. Actually, even when I'm not playing, keeping my fingers straight is still super unnatural for me : D

  • @Skye0304

    @Skye0304

    And also to add, you would never allow yourself to slump over to play the piano to that extent. You'd have to adjust yourself to find a suitable posture when playing the keys, otherwise it's uncomfortable for your wrist to play too.

    I never would have guessed the "banker" was a guzheng player! I don't blame you guys for guessing it wrong; it was hard to tell who was lying in this one! The singer had me convinced she was the classical musician!

    If Brett and Eddie knew more about opera, they should have asked her what roles she'd sung. Mezzos usually fulfill supporting roles. The more well-known starring roles are Carmen, Delilah, Cinderella (Rossini), plus "male" roles like Romeo (Bellini) and Cherubino (Mozart).

    These are some masterful examples in avoiding to answer, especially in the 30 seconds explanation, "... ... .. ... oh, time is up" haha If there is a classical musician to detect I usually go with the one who is the most observant, not quiet necessarily, not a tormented, but mm a judgy look in the eyes in a way haha Great episode, great guests!
