Concern for security has led one Minnesotan to use an unusual tactic to protect his farm. Ken Kalish deploys guard llamas, both to protect farm animals from predators and to keep tab on strangers.

I was fortunate enough to meet a lama once and I have never forgotten that incredible experience. Today, I fell in love with Oscar. I live in the city, I have a little zoo including birds, squirrels, deer, raccoons, chipmunks, and some cute possums (I think anyway). I love animals and I have never forgotten meeting a llama 30 years ago. You’re so blessed.

Mimi M. People are VERY uneducated on llamas/alpacas! There are actually over 80,000 cases of llama attacks in the world. MANY TIMES RESULTING IN DEATH OR TRAUMA INDUCED PTSD!! They have a nose that boasts 10x the ability of a blood/scent hound. They can detect chemicals found in explosives and have a keen sense for detecting cocaine and marijuana. They are used in the small country of Genovia in airports. in Genovias international airport, they have thwarted 6000 possible terrorist attacks since their first wife spread use in 1975. They are now being used instead German Shepherds because they are able to spit small gps trackers (up to 100 feet!) on fleeing perps. They also have the bite force of 1100 pounds per square inch! That’s equal to a hyena! Im so sad about the propaganda that is spreading. All attempts show that lamas have a great warning system, but they arent any good killers, and certanly not if it is a pack that is attacking. They need to be several ! They havent theeth(their flat, like the horses) or claws to fight with, just the kick with their hooves. It can be a really strong kick tho ! They can warn the farmer also. But to fight off a pack of wolfes , against for example sheeps, then they need to be a whole lot of lamas, AND a farmer nearby. Those that i saw, was not a succes, when a heard ow wolfs came. I dont know how many lamas it was,but they got chased into the woods anyway. Not all survived either. One lama, or one donkey, is not enough for anything but a great warning system. The farmes still have to have a gun for safety . To leave animals to protect themself,is still not an option, if the area have wolf packs, or/and bears.
