GTX 1080 Ti Vs RTX 3060 Ti - A Worthy Upgrade?

Ғылым және технология

I recently purchased a 3060Ti to replace my GTX 1080 Ti and after comparing the two graphics cards' gameplay performance, I was pretty surprised by the results, especially the continuous resilience of the older GTX card.

The jump from Maxwell to Pascal was INSANE. Performance and especially efficiency wise. After the 1080ti it went downhill in terms of improvements.

maxwell to pascal is 28nm straight to 16nm (skipping 20nm). pascal to turing are considered as minor jump since 12nm is just an optimized 16nm. plus starting with turing nvidia is going back with full compute architecture.

@@arenzricodexd4409 even with all that, the improvements is nothing to laugh at. The 1080Ti was a $700-$800 card, while a 3060Ti which would be a closer to $300-350 card if the market wasnt screwed is up to 33% faster, has rt and dlss. So half the price and a tier higher performance after in the 2nd generation is normal and considering Turning offered no meaningful improvement at any given price point/

@@imo098765 Ok, but compare that with the improvement from a 980ti to a 1080 and you won't Believe your eyes. and don't just compare them in shire performance but in performance per watt and you see insane results. In some cases over 50% in 1 gen and even going from ti to normal. At the time it finally swayed me to upgrading my gtx 295 to a 1080 (I was a broke student at the time and made my first real money right around the pascal launch). The jump for me was unreal at the time. Going from an 8(?) year old flagship behemoth dual GPU Card to the comparably efficient and monstrously cooled single GPU GTX 1080 game rock was like going to the future for me. Good memories with Pascal.

@@imo098765 That's what I said man. I don't expect increases like this maybe ever again. The headroom in manufacturing just isn't there anymore. We once again are hitting a wall here but this time we run against the boundaries of physics itself. There is just no way to go much smaller hence why they start to stack chips. But then we will run into thermal limitations too. Maybe we get some sort of paradigm shift in form of a new material be it Carbon nanotubes or bismuth or whatever but I don't see silicon improving that much more. Sure the marginal architectural improvement here and there and even a few more node shrinks to maybe sub nm nodes but not much more. We'll see but given that the clocks start rising once again and power consumption at an all time high I don't think they can go much further with current tech. Would love to be proven wrong though.

Very nice comparison. I bought my 1080ti back in early 2018 for $500. One of the best purchases I've ever made. Managed to skip right over all the gpu shortages and its held its own. Thinking a good upgrade for it would be the rtx4070 when that is released. [update 6 months later, will likely wait till 5070 bc honestly its fine at 1440p 75hz]

With how badly Nvidia handled initial supply of the RTX 30 Series, I'd bank on waiting at least 2 more years for any RTX 40 Series to be widely available at non-scalper prices. The only help gamers have now is the crashing cryptocurrency markets, which means less GPU purchases for crypto mining. You may be better off with a 6800XT in the meanwhile and run FSR where you can to get the best performance from it imo as an upgrade to your 1080ti.

I haven't built a PC in years and had to do way too much research for it. I'm happy that it seems to be an upgrade compared to an aging flagship. I know that probably sounds weird, but in the past, I have seen new midrange cards that fail to outperform older (and therefore cheaper) cards. I was really worried that this may have been the case with my new purchase. I am relieved to see that I didn't waste my money on an immediately outdated GPU Very informative video. Thanks again.

I mean, the 3090 is impressive, and I'm sure the 4090 will be even moreso, but they're not on the same level as the 1080ti. It could run everything 5 times over, and it was a hell of a bargain. Personally, if I had a 1080Ti, I wouldn't be upgrading just yet, it seems OK still, and since my monitors only support a maximum of 1080p, playing at that resolution would still be perfectly fine. It's also interesting that the 1080Ti has a higher base and boost clock, as well as more video memory (albeit GDDR5 instead of GDDR6), but the RTX 3060 outperformed the 1080Ti. I was honestly expecting both GPUs to perform at a similar level. In any case, this doesn't really matter to me, since I won't be using a desktop PC anytime soon due to lack of space - my HP OMEN 15 with i7-8750H and GTX 1050Ti will still do the job nicely, assuming the CPU doesn't cook itself. HP were not known for providing adequate cooling to power hungry chips; in fact, I'd say the heatsink is barely suitable for the i5-8300H or the i7-7700HQ, let alone the more power hungry i7-8750H.

I'm still rocking my 1080 (non-Ti). I have yet to play a game it can't handle. Ofcourse pushing God of War or any of the newer games to 4K is...a killer. But other than that, I play every single game in 1440p (probably would play in 1440p even with a better card). My plan was to get a 3070, possibly 3080 back when they were launched. But we all know what happened with the GPU stock around the world lol. Now for the past 6+ months I've given up on 30-series (or amd eq.) My sights have been on the 4070/4080 for quite a while now. Pretty sure a jump from 1080 to 4080 will be a "nice" difference. I'm more the kinda person that waits a couple/several generations. The difference is more noticable. For example, last december I upgraded my CPU(+mobo, ram etc) from a 4790k, to a 12700k. Let's just say, there's been a few 'generations' between I skipped :D Fortunately, cpu's arent all that important in gaming (most of the time) But all in all, I still think the 1080/1080ti are the best cards ever made. Considering what I paid for it (approx $300 2months after release!) and considering it still effing rocks :) If u could fall in love with a GPU, 1080 is the love of my life ;-) I do appreciate vids like this. Even if its the Ti-version. 👍

gr8 comparison, thank you for taking the time to do the reseach. ive been on the fence, but may wait for the 4000 series of the 30 ti's after reapplying better thermal paste, and redoing the thermal pads (both on the chips and on the back of the card under the backplate), ive been able to get my 1080ti mini from Zotac to hover around 55c-65c(at 97% and 99% loads) with your suggestion of underclocking, from another vid. I will, most the time, maintain 1936-1949mhz @993-981v in MSI AB and hover around the mentioned degrees I play a lot of FC3 and FC4, and with mixed high and mid settings i can get it to run 64-90 FPS at 1440p. I was hoping the 3060 ti would power through those games crazy that im still dropping to 45 fps in dense crowds in those games at 1080p and 1440p. Fallout 4 no diff (even modded out for performance) Paired my 1080ti mini with a R7 2700x and slapped a fat Fuma cooler on it with a Carbonaut pad. This was so useful to me! My 1080ti with a i5-11400 plays Baldurs Gate 3 beautifully at native 4k res on my TV (max 60 FPS) so I don’t think I’ll upgrade until DLSS becomes normal requirement :)

Hello nice and kind man. Maybe it might be interesting to see the power draw too? everyone dealing with higher electricity bills and a newer gpu might use less watts for the same framerate. In some countries the power bill makes a big difference depending on old or new gpu hardware! I used to connect a wattmeter to my computer power socket. Thats a small decive to show you how many watts are drawn at any given moment. It can also calculate it into $. Very intersting to see how much more money i pay for a bloom effect or different resolution xD

In the future, try to say the difference between two cards in percentage, instead of just calling a number of frames, which can mean different things. For example, in this case, Cyberpunk runs a huge 31% faster on the RTX card for average and 33% faster at the 1% lows. Which is a subtantial chunk of extra performance. More than the paper specs would imply. Calling it 15 more frames makes it sounds punny, but 15 is a lot when you're in the 40's. This type of uplift was more from 1080TI to a 2080TI when that launched. But Pascal not getting any optimizations for newer games is increasing this margin. If you have a card that outputs 5 frames per second and another does 10, the difference is double between them. Saying that card has 5 more frames doesnt show the actual image

agree, its better to compare cards in percentage or time per frame (1000 / FPS)

Excellent video, I had my eye on a 3060ti for a while but got a Series X instead as I couldn't get hold of one. At least I know how it will perform now with a mid range CPU, it looks like it will exceed Series X performance. What board do you use with the 12400f?

I went from a 1050 ti to a 3060 ti & it is quite a noticeable upgrade. Eg. Going from about 75 fps in Fortnite on mostly Medium settings to over 120 fps on a mix of High & Epic settings. I don't have a 1440p monitor yet but plan on buying one possibly on Black Friday for a nice discount. :) & my friend @ work has a gtx 1080 & he isn't in a huge rush to upgrade either. It's still a decent card for it's age. Neway thanx for sharing. :)

The 1080ti belongs up there with some of the best gpus of all time. It’s had fantastic value over time considering how well it keeps up in modern games. It’s only really worth upgrading to a 3070 or above right now if you can get one at a reasonable price. Otherwise hold on to it and get a 4070 or AMD equivalent when that launches.

Sad part is it's only kept up via brute force. It's been disheartening seeing RX and RTX cards it used to beat before slowly catch up and surpass it with updates and optimizations that Nvidia seem to completely ignore for the 1080ti. It's almost like Nvidia doesn't _want_ us keeping these cards.

You should have listed the number of transistors and the node size in the early specs screen comparison. Some people really dont yet understand things like improving performance through other manes besides wattage, or the absurd number of transistors they stuff in chips these days. Some cards have over 20 billion transistors these days, it's insane. I think more people should talk about that.

I went from 1070Ti to 3070 and I'm very impressed. The 1070Ti held its own still, especially since I was using it on a 1080p monitor. I think the 1070ti up to 1080ti can run pretty good at 1080p maybe for another coupe years

That made me feel a bit better about my purchase of an 1080 ti when I paid £520 for it a year ago, but like you say it was during the height of the graphics card shortage and I needed an upgrade on my aging GTX 960. The other thing I am pleased about the 1080 ti is how it doesn't give off too much hot air and is pretty silent even under heavy load, unlike the 960, although it is paired up with an i9 9900k and 32 gb of 2600 mhz DDR4 ram but only have a 24 ins 1080p monitor. I've no desire to play anything on 4K yet.

Hard lesson learned for me. I bought a 3090TI and realized you can’t get smooth FPS on ultra in 98% of titles because games are optimized for medium or high settings and not ultra. So now I run medium or high with a beast cart. I could have just saved my money and kept my old card (2080) that I had. Be smart and save your money.

I'm also pretty surprised how my rig is holding up even with a weaker card than I had before. Went from the 1070 ti to the 1070 then to the rx 590 fatboy oc. Gotta say with balanced/quality fsr and medium settings Cyberpunk is awesome at 1080p. Been enjoying Cyberpunk a bit more as of late. Still get the occasional crash when changing settings but thats like it.

I've been doing 4k gaming since launch with that card. only with more recent games have I had to settle with 1440 or even 1080. My friends usually think I'm lying until I show them, it's even more of a dream with sli games. plays like a modern setup with games that were designed for 2. too bad not many games support sli.
