this got Derek another notch of respect. love the way he approaches his priorities.
When I was watching Derek doing his blast beats in a dream theater song, I was just thinking....HELL YEAH!!
I smiled when Derek roddy swore. I honestly have never heard/expected him to swear haha. He has that dorky bible thumping dad vibe about him. One of my biggest influences in drumming! Love this guy!
Wow! Loads of comments, a few negative... All I can say is Derek is one of the nicest men I have had to fortune to talk to. Really sincere and great to have a conversation with. He chose to do the audition, didn't necessarily want the gig, but we should respect his decision. If you ever get the chance to meet Derek, say Hi from me! Ha! Thanks for listening! CT

alexsdrums11 you had a BLAST? I see what you did there.
He's keeping it real I like this interview a lot.
I don't hear anything here badmouthing the guys in Dream Theater. He DOES seem to find the media portion of it laughable, and it is. That has nothing to do with the dudes in the band. Derek's honest, direct and polite here, and he did what any professional musician would do in taking the audition, regardless of whether or not he wanted the gig.
Such an honest, cool and down to earth guy. That stuff really makes sense, really it was done in an unnecessarily cheesy soap opera way, they could have just played it cool and quiet and gone with Mangini straight away.
Dude chose his business over Dream Theater. That's fucking legit. He doesn't sound butthurt at all, He sounds confident, and he was very straight forward with the band. Some people don't give a hot fuck about Dream Theater. I wouldn't lower myself and fellate their egos just to be in the band, and neither should this Derek.
I like how Derek is straight up here and tells it how it is but also gives respect at the same time 😊👍👏
I listened to the Minnemann interview and this one. I appreciate hearing the feedback.
I hadn't heard of many of these drummers before the DT auditions, but I gotta say I have a lot of respect for all of them now. Monster players, very professional, and sound like great guys.
Man, this is a completely honest interview and it gives a fair view on Derek's and the other drummers' situations going to the audition. With all respect to Dream Theater and us, their fans - I just don't get it why people think that everyone who is a good enough musician to be part of Dream Theater is obligated to anyone to be part of the band. Derek and some of the other drummers had their own things going on or just settled down, happy as they are, that's why they didn't care so much nor they needed to become part of the band. I believe all the stuff and the audition comes down to give the musicians a different experience, but mostly as Derek mentioned - to please Dream Theater's record company and it makes most sense for things to be that way.
Would love it if you interview Aquilies Priester, Virgil Donati, and Peter Wildoer as well :) It would be interesting to hear their insights about the auditions :)

Was at Wildoers drum clinic here in sweden, everyone only asked questions about the DT auditions. He didn’t really have anything negative to say or a strong oppinion on the whole thing. If anyone was going to spur up some drama about the auditions, it’s not him.
had never heard him till dt audition. seems like a nice guy and a helluva drummer!
I think Derek's being brutally honest here. Given his position, I don't blame him for declining some gigs. If you aren't a pro musician, you can't really fully appreciate why Derek went on the path that he did with the auditions. That being said, I wish Derek would get his s**t together with his own band and start touring with that! It's not bad watching him as a clinician, but seeing all the old videos of him performing with Hate Eternal has me pining to actually see him live with a 'proper' death metal band. Yes, I know he's taken other gigs in other styles of music, but I haven't seen him live in a metal setting. He'd better hurry up on that... I ain't no spring chicken, and my b@11Z IZ ITCHEN fo' some live Derek Roddy!!!
You wanna be in Dream Theater? "Naw, I've got a lot of snakes that take up my time."

Whatever floats his boat.
What a refreshing, candid explanation. And a lot of us have been in a situation where the gig *seems* like a great idea, but does it disrupt my lifestyle? Derek is a really smart guy and knows himself enough to know where and what to pritorize. Some people never get to that point in life, sadly. I agree that Mangini was the best guy for the job. He wanted it, and it showed. He's been doing a stellar job!
I think his reasons and arguments are pretty good...
I will say this: the band is very smart, in that the audition videos and the subsequent reactions to them have gotten the band more buzz than any of their music ever has proceeding this. They really embraced internet social media early as a way to grow their following, much like Paul Gilbert and some others. I like the band, I hear so many other bands that I grew up listening to in short phrases and aspects of any particular song of theirs, but they just don't have any hooks and tunes to carry them forward to the kind of popularity that musicians of this caliber you would think would have by now. Adding a different kind of drummer/musician might just have been the thing to stir things up and challenge their musical writing style, so that they can grow and not write the same monotonous stuff. But, they like their status quo and are not willing to change.
I've hung out with this guy before and he is the nicest, most humble guy. A truly amazing talent. He's right when he said that "anyone of us could have walked all over this gig." Once you get to a certain level of talent behind the kit, there is no such thing as better or worse. All of the drummers were amazing. Roddy knew from the start that he wasn't a fit. Nothing wrong with accepting the invitation. I'm sure the exposure has done everyone quite a bit of good. Any negative talk about Roddy's talent is a load of trash. The guy's footwork is apex. On top of that, he is just a really, really nice fellow in person. I think he's given us an honest appraisal here.
we all love this guy
I've heard Thomas, Peter W and Marco talk about the DT audition, Id love to hear the rest of teh guys experiences, esp AP!
Derek Roddy in Fear Factory! daaang!
I think the guy is being honest. Why insult the man for his being honest?
derek speaks the truth here, yes he sounds a teensy bit bitter, but who wouldn't be in the circumstances.. good dude (Y)

DT was sketchy. Minnemann asked them not to use any of his footage and they told him not to worry and then did it anyway.
Learning tunes for an audition is a pretty lengthy process in terms of prepping songs (particularly DT's catalog) I don't understand why anyone would invest that much time into it if they didn't want the gig? Makes little sense

Nice stuff !!!
I get where he's coming from, but if he doesn't want it, why would he do it? Just because DT wanted 7 guys to pick from. If one guy doesn't want it, imo he should say no so they can find another guy who actually wants it. It's just doing a disservice to their audition process as a whole.

If you listen to Marco's reaction interview to the auditions, he says as well that he did not really know Dream Theater or know the guys, except Jordan, and did have misgivings about auditioning, and what would he tell them if they actually picked him, because he didn't know if he really wanted to be a member of the band. He was only in town to audition for Dream Theater in the first place because he was at the same time recording a project with Jordan, and Jordan was like hey, 'You want to come audition for Dream Theater while your here?' So, I think it's the case with a few of the drummers there that day.
@VikramShankarMusic

Crank Bait Oh yeah I'm familiar with Marco's take on things. I think both of them should have avoided the audition, just in the interest of being fair to the band. Marco may have done it because it'd be fun to jam w/ DT, but that's not what they had in mind. I remember reading that shortly before the decision, Jordan contacted Marco asking if he would really be able to commit, and Marco replied no - and that that was one of the biggest reasons why Mangini beat him out.

As a professional musician it wouldn't make sense to not do the audition, even if you never had the intention of taking the job in the first place. The experience, exposure and connections are invaluable to any pro musician.

Derek's wife said it best (5:38): "LOOK, WHEN DREAM THEATER CALLS YOU TO GO AUDITION, YOU FUCKING GO AUDITION!"
if you see his drumhead issue you would get the idea. he doesn't want to be known as a guy who doesn't show to audition.
I personally feel the band had nothing to do with the "reality show" portion of this. Sounds like Roadrunner was all over this trying to sell records. With how humble the DT guys seem to be, I highly doubt anyone of them were into this that much outside of trying out phenomenal drummers.

Very cool to hear his comments about writing the drumparts on K.O.A.K and I Monarch. I love the first, but the drumparts on I Monarch are way more detailed and "in" the music. Now I understand why. Put your foot down!
Don't blame Derek, he never wanted to go audition, the entire thing was a drama to justify Mangini's entrance.
Personally I believe everything that Derek said. He has always been an honest and gentle man. On the other hand, Dream Theater is just a bunch of egoistic assholes. They are just like Metallica at this point. What Derek said about the "reality show" kind of thing makes so much sense coming from these guys.

Some actually know how to have fun in their industry and further their career in the meantime. They went just because they could. Better to have tried than to wonder "what if...?" Listen to Marco's interview as well, where his audition has certainly created other opportunities from it. Just because you know where the gig is going doesn't mean there won't be other things that could arise from it too.

larzblast Marco didn't need the publicity, dude is already known to musicians and managers as a beast behind the kit. This was not about fun for any of these guys but the publicity involved and publicity generates money. But even I knew before it was announced Mangini was going to be the guy, and I didn't need DT to tell me that. And the reason is not that I feel he was the best option, but because they already knew him and he had the connections. And I have to give props for Derek with keeping his class and not giving any of that soundbytes and sounding like a total kiss ass.

To make Mangini's pick look like a process when they actually always had him in mind. Plus Road Runner thought it would be great marketing for the next album. In my view, it wasn't a good decision to go with that whole thing.
Why they didn't ask Zonder, Gavin, and Dicenso as well is beyond me.
This makes so much sense now. Awesome Derek good job bro 👍 sticking to your guns is always the way to go
Derek Roddy is an awesome guy and great drummer. Problem is his style wasn't really fit for DT. DT nowadays is now leaning more into the "metal" side. DR was more on the "extreme" and experimental stuff.

+Badassvidsz he is, still trying to fig out where a blast would fit in anywhere on any dt song or jam
That’s how I felt to the way the video played out you knew mangini was getting it right from the start it was just how the whole thing played out for one he had most of the footage through the whole thing that right there told me he’s getting it cause when I saw Marco do the aristocats show he is far batter a drummer than mangini but he go no attention in the video it was just too obvious who the winner was and don’t get me wrong he has done great but I know for sure Marco would of totally changed the feel in all the records to come

I wanna see Marco play live with DT, boy that would be super fun!! Also he has similar persona to Portnoy which gives flavor and balance to some other members who are more in serious and kinda stiff vibe. But I genuinely dont want to see Marco be a band member of DT, because being diversed knowledge kind of musician like him, doing so could limit his creative expression and the fact that I heard there was an exclusivity clause in the contract makes it worse. So yeah... good for Marco and DT to not join forces.
Derek its a Real musician , not a robot like those folks , you never gonna see Derek in that kind of shit , see ya
It does seem bizarre that they turned a drummer selection into a show. I really enjoyed the show to be honest but I didn't think about the ethics of getting these drummers to come in and shove a camera in their face during the audition. I think they where just trying to keep people interested in the band because loosing the drummer was almost catastrophic
He was fine until the end then he sounded very strange. I guess bitter is the right word unforunately
his dream is play traditional grip hahahahahoho

It woulda been a waste of Derek’s time. DT are all amazing players, just not Derek’s type shit.
He was so right about that shit with fast execution test ,it doesn't really mean shit and it's so pretentious and arrogant to throw that shit at drummers like Virgil or Lang who play much more complicated music than that of Dream Theater.
Playing in a band like DT needs real passion which Mangini showed he has and it seems Derek knew he is more interesred in reptiles. Well, Mangini now plays with DT and Derek can raise reptiles ...
Hummm... For some reason he sound upset for not getting the gig. He is using as an excuse his snakes!!! He would have make 10 times or more playing with DT!!! I could understand been away from his family because of touring. But why bother to go for the auditions if he knew he couldn't do it. Derek, you are an awesome drummer bro, but you should not been talking trash about DT for no give you the gig. Got to be humble bro and thankful that they know that your one of the best drummer out there. Don't let it get over your head bro. Don't mean no disrespect bro just an advise for the future.

robert madueno you are correct, the guys in dream theater are awesome musicians but their material is very predictable and tends to be on the korny side of metal with endless arpeggios that doesnt hold a candle to bands like Opeth or even older prog like ELP and early Genesis Dream Theater is to Yes and King Crimson like what Nickel Back is to Pearl Jam and Nirvana

It wasn’t at the hand of Dream Theater in my opinion. Roadrunner was desperate to sell units, and they feared low sales without some drama attached. You can hear Derek talk about that towards the last few minutes of the interview. Sadly, that commercial attitude is still present in Dream Theater’s marketing to this day.
Does not make sense at all. Man, is he angry or something? Sounds a bit like sour grapes

He does sound a bit upset about 2 things. 1°) the reality show vibe of the documentary. 2°) Obviously JP had chosen his "pick" ( hence Mangini's cap at the end of the film and the obvious NFL draft comparaison ) and he wasn't going to change his mind no matter what happened after ( Donati, Minnemann , Priester ).

I lost most of my respect for DT, when I saw Mike Mangini with black, long hair. I mean, how old are they, 15 ? As if they sell 1 CD less with Mangini looking normal..... DT is a little overrated, imho. A guy like Mike Portnoy leaving the band, says something too.
Great drummer. Sounds as pretentious as Dream Theater has become. Would have been a great fit.
