GT Live 2004 - Japan GT racing in the United States!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's a special Christmas treat from 23GT.net - Speed Channel's one-hour special covering GT Live 2004, the only time the Japan GT Championship came to the USA and raced outside of Asia!
Although the event had its share of controversy, it was well-attended and certainly had a lot of appeal for any import enthusiast of the time. Be sure to check out the “East versus West” drift competition between Japan's D1GP pros and the top competitors of America's Formula D as well as the time-attack segment with some cool video of Tarzan Yamada laying siege to the track with some tricked-out R34 GT-Rs. You can also choose between the cultured British accent of former sports car racer Alain de Cadenet as he talks about the basics of GT car construction and drift competition, or the loudmouthed segments of out-of-place hot rod journalist Steve Magnante where he intermittently raves about GIRLS, GIRLS, GIRLS! Pick your poison!
As always, if you're fan of Nissan GT-Rs or import cars in general please check out the blog at 23GT.net and consider hitting the like and subscribe buttons! Happy holidays and as always, drive safe!

This video hits harder knowing Auto Club Speedway (the track where this race was held) will be demolished and converted into a short track. RIP ACS.

Yeah, it sucks. Hopefully a shorter track can still exist and doesn't get ruined by all the NIMBYs in Cali.

This has to be the most all-time special event to ever take place when Japan's Motorsport comes to the US. Most of the GT300 and GT500 cars scene in this special event was in Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport video games.

Yeah, it was definitely a one of a kind event! I wish I could have gone but I was living in the East Coast at the time. I have a friend who said he was able to go and I'm so jelly lol.

Yeah, that rebodied Monaro was a great drift car lol. Too bad about what GM did to both Pontiac and Holden. Always rooted for the Commodores in V8 Supercars :)

The grandstands are pretty empty. It’s a shame that Super GT didn’t take off in the US back then.

Yeah, the grandstands look pretty sad but the event overall drew an attendance of 45,000 - about the same as an IndyCar event at the time - so it could have continued on. Sadly the GT Association couldn't come to an agreement with the promoter for the following year :(

@@23gt17 If that's true, the event could be considered a success. During the Daytona 24 broadcasts of the past decade, the commentators have mentioned that road racing fans don't generally watch races from the grandstands at rovals- they prefer to pack the infield so they can be closer to the action. It's crazy to think that the reasonably good attendance figures of this event weren't enough to get a second event for '05, especially since even in the present day, cars from all these disciplines still appear in racing games that become commercial smash hits like GT and Forza. I wish I could have gone to this thing- I was unfortunately too young at the time.

@@kpegc Yeah, unfortunately the organizer for GT LIve couldn't come to terms with the GT Association (JGTC's organizer) to have their cars come back the next year. I believe the sheer expense of shipping the cars and crews all the way to the States was major sticking point. Another thing that may have affected it was the JGTC's plans to expand outside Japan at the time which were having issues with the FIA. Basically, if they added too many overseas rounds they'd have to give up being sanctioned by the local Japanese Automobile Federation and go under the FIA instead as an international series. That whole rigmarole resulted in the JGTC being renamed to Super GT in 2005 with plans for a maximum of two overseas events per year but only one has been done annually for various reasons. I wish I could have gone to GT Live myself but I was living on the East Coast back then and making small beans lol.

7:44 The M-TEC NSX GT300 was actually a detuned GT500 car, little did he know... Also RIP to the 2 mile Auto Club Speedway.

@@23gt17 I don’t know him… but imagining someone trying to say Japanese names with a heavy British accent sounds entertaining lol… I just like how back then these 4age’s, SR20’s, 13b’s can still compete in pro drift comp… now it’s nothing but V8’s… i pretty much ignore Formula D and only watch D1GP now…

@@VincentS327 Alain de Cadenet was all over the place on Speed Channel back in those days mainly because he was a former racer with a cool British accent lol. And yes, it's disappointing US drifting has defaulted to V8s. So much more variety still in Japan. When I was at the DSport Tour drift event last January the D1GP guys had all sorts of cool motors - 2JZs, SR20s, even a VR38 swapped into Ken Gushi's RC. And the non-pros had even more variety :)
