GSI Ultra Light Pinnacle Canister Stove & Halulite Minimalist Cup Kit

This is a close look at the GSI Pinnacle Canister Stove including a boil time and run time/efficiency test plus discussion of the size, weight, and dimensions of the stove. I bought the GSI Halulite Minamilist Complete kit including the GSI Minimalist Cup, lid, cozy, pot grabber, pinnacle stove, wind shield, and GSI "foon" (the "foon" is not in this video... for good reason). This kit is marketed to 'ultra-light' backpackers and hikers, but the quality of construction and materials rate right up there as excellent durable outdoor gear.

Love it... To paraphrase you, "I'm not a gram counter kinda guy, I'm a durable gear kinda guy". Here here! Hell, when I backpack, I even bring real food! In fact, this last time, my 40 lbs pack I had for a two-nighter also included two 16 oz cans of a delicious double IPA. Now, that being said, I'm also looking for ways to conserve, but mainly space, so i can make room for a real camera, tripod and lens-filter system for back-country landscape photography. SO... looks like a stove that will help with that goal - thank you! Bob

I'm sure with you on the "real food" and I'm lucky enough to have a son in his 20s who serves the role of pack mule for the beer really well ;)

i would wrap the windscreen around the outside of tthe pot and cozy and use a elastic band to hold it on. that should reduce the risk of scratching the inside.

In some sporting goods stores, the minimalist cup set comes with the stove and windscreen in one kit. Thanks for watching! I'm glad this was useful.

+Outdoor Archives Thanks! I probably should have tried to stick closer to REI's methodology, but I can't duplicate it since they test at sea level, so I was hoping it would still at least make sense.

At 17:47 you state that the windscreen "fits this stove just right," but you don't show it resting on the stove. In fact, the diameter of the assembled windscreen is about 2" wider than the stove arms. The only way I can get it to "fit" is to rest it on the ground, below the flame, where it doesn't do any good.

You must have one. I made the same mistake the first time I deployed it. The stove arms fold out away from the head (vertically) before you flip out the second piece of each arm (horizontally) . They can be deployed folded or unfolded but they have to be folded away from the head to utilize the windscreen.

Good review, and did you recently change the name of your channel? I watch all of your videos, and did not recall any announcement about a name change. So I assume that "betweenfiveandseven" is gone for good? In any event, thanks for the review!

+Msilverhammer I appreciate the loyal viewership, Msliverhammer. You're right, I made no announcement about it and I didn't even know it was possible to change the channel name until a few days ago. As you know, I've been working on some specific things to improve the quality of my content (better cameras, multiple camera angles sometimes, and digital audio recorders... plus I really am making strides to start condensing everything somewhat in an attempt to balance thorough and complete information with the average viewer's willingness to stay tuned in)... I started trying to learn more about youtube and I've been taking the youtube creator studio boot camp courses. One of the things I learned was my channel name just didn't make sense to anyone but me and a couple of people who know my pseudonym from some web forums, usenet, and 3d shooter games. So, I was considering starting a second channel with a different name when I accidentally came across a setting to change my display name in google+. Doing so changed my channel name. It was completely inadvertent and just a product of exploration in the google+ settings. I decided to keep the new name and see if it made any difference to my current viewers and/or helped me gain new subscribers.... It's too early to tell if the name change is helping. I've gotten 40+ new subscribers since the name change, but I've also released a bunch of new content lately and it's relatively diverse stuff... Firearms, a knife, the stove in this video, a couple of tarps, and just to let my saw video viewers know I haven't forgotten them and am still thinking about saws and blades, I did another folding saw comparison a couple of weeks ago. It might be the diversity in content that brought a few new subscribers, but it might be the name change... Time will tell if it was a good idea or not.Anyway, there I go being as long winded as usual ;) Thanks for watching! I do appreciate your time.

Love it. In fact, I used it this morning. I forgot my coffee on the kitchen counter when I left the house. When I got where I was going, I boiled water on my tailgate for one of those "Via" coffee packets even before I had all the tools out of the truck to do my work. ... Not exactly a lightweight backpacking adventure, but I was sure happy to have coffee ;)

The BRS - 3000T Ultra is 1/3rd the weight of this GSI one, for ultra lite backpackers. The GSI is definitely a higher quality, as the BRS claims to be titanium alloy, but only costs $10 USD. So, kind of curious if the BRS is junk. The BRS advertises "Gas consumption is 140g per hour and the combustion power is 2700W", so it wouldn't have gone 73 minutes on that 100g tank.

+Jeremy Madsen I've actually looked at those on amazon a couple of times. I think the complaint I read about the 3000t on backpackinglight several times was the pot supports were 1) too short and 2) uneven ...so the user has to be pretty careful making sure their pot is supported sturdily enough not to have it spill from the motion of boiling water. But at $10-15 it sure is hard to beat as a value plus seriously light weight device. ... At a similar price to the Pinnacle is the Olicamp Ion Micro that weighs 1.5 ounces. Living Survival did a good review of that one not very long ago). You gain almost an ounce of savings with that one compared to the Pinnacle, but lose the very generously sized pot stands the Pinnacle has... Since I made this video, I went back over some stove reviews I've read the last couple of years and done some math. This GSI Pinnacle is punching way above its weight as far as efficiency is concerned. In fact, it stands right up there with a number of $125-$250.00 stoves in efficiency and even beats a few of them by a pretty wide margin. When I began that test, I expected about 40-45 minutes. My jaw almost hit the floor when it got past an hour and then I was really surprised when it just kept cooking along for another 13 minutes. That was a 100 gram / 3.5 ounce can. Some of the best stoves on the market won't get nearly to 2 hours on an 8 ounce can. This one (mathematically speaking) should get past 2 1/2 hours and maybe so far as 2:45 or so. Anyway: Thanks for watching! This was a fun video to do going back to my original format where I'm using only 1 camera and my face is never on camera. I think I'll keep your suggestion of the BRS 3000t in mind and maybe a couple of other stoves I might find on sale, and do a few stove videos like that one this summer. Thanks again!

+Essential Gear & Useful Skills I actually ordered the BRS after watching this and prior to doing so saw the gripes people had with it, despite its high ratings. I ordered it from a site I sometimes go to; That site is in China, so it'll be at a minimum 2 weeks, but probably a month before I actually have it. I'll see how junky the arms are and will probably end up getting higher quality one, like you've reviewed here. I plan on seeing if I can sneak one into my Firebox stove, since the wood fuel I use burns too fast and blocks the oxygen with all the ash/coals (fallen juniper is all that is available at my favorite camp), I'll stage it so it is right under my pot, though the pot will be on Firebox supports instead of resting directly on the arms; But, I'll do some heating on just the arms as well for hiking purposes.
