GSI Kettle makes lunch

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Took a trip to Blagdon Lake and made lunch.
In my last video I made some modifications to the BCB Cooker and wanted to know if they actually worked in the real world so decided to cook lunch in my new GSI Cooker.

I use my fire dragon stove with a small trangia mess tin. I've made an additional windshield that blocks off one end completely and epoxyed some aluminium from a drinks can to block up the holes on the lid. This only leaves one opening on one side, makes it more windproof. I sit it on a silicone mat to shield the ground from the heat and to stop it slipping around. I made a small method stove that sits inside when it's closed. I find that 10ml of alcohol will boil 100ml of water do I tend to measure the amount of meths and let it burn out. I tend to "haybox" cook, add boiling water to whatever so "cook" in a half litre polypropylene box, the type that is microwave safe. I found one that's about 300ml or so that, after cutting the locking flaps off with scissors, fits inside the trangia. Unfortunately the fire dragon didn't fit inside the box but you can't have everything. Even so the whole setup is very compact and discreet.

In my stove, I made a shield with the sides angled in to allow for a smaller pot/ cup to heat up. As a result, the side is a little higher for better wind protection.

Hi Debbie and Peter, approximate height at top of spout is 12mm and height from the bottom is 17mm. Opening is 18mm in diameter . Mine is the GSI Glacier. Thanks. Have a lovely day.

It looked like you set your kettle right down on top of you alcohol burner covering the holes around the top rim. You want to have the base of the pot you're cooking in to be aprox: 1 1/4" to 1 5/8" above the burner. Perhaps it was just the angle of the camera. Also, windscreens are imperative with alcohol stoves. Best to wrap around entire pot with about 1"to 2" space between pot & screen. It rapidly increases cook/boil time & is far more fuel efficient. Cheers from Canada.

Hi, thanks for the observations. I was having a stove experimental day. The alcohol stove in the video is an Evernew Titanium Stove, it has two sets of burner holes and is designed to work like a Trangia but also with a pot sat directly on top. This is supposed to be more fuel efficient but takes longer to reach a boil, I’m not convinced about the fuel efficiency. You could also use a small pot without the need for a trivit but I find that a little unstable. A piece of aluminium was placed at the rear as a wind block that matched the height of the alcohol stove so the kettle could be placed directly on top. The BCB was modified to take the Evernew. I would usually use a wind shield but for the purposes of the video I chose not to. I guess that should have been explained better in the video. I have an unhealthy interest in stoves and am always trying out new ways to use them. Thank you for taking the time to comment and watch my madness. All the best 👍

@@InfoZhedExplore I have the sickness too. It also applies to my axes & knives as well as all my many stoves. Most people who see all my stoves, axes & knives think I have issues or a problem. I happen to think I have dozens & dozens of solutions to my problems. Cheers.

Hi, it’s the GSI Glacier 1 Quart or 0.94 Litres. Great kettle. I really like the larger lid opening as it’s easy to fit kit inside. The base is slightly rounded compared to the Trangia so does not sit quite as well in the Trangia windshield. However, it’s not too much of an issue for me as I now use the Trangia Trivit with it. Any trivit or any small wire grill plate will work just as well.
