Erst einmal selber besser machen.

Wrong! There are about 500 teams. It is not a traditional and extremely popular sport here, but who cares?

@@florianmeier3186 hmm, ok, didnt know that. Thought it was considered too sexist for our society. Is it mostly in the German American schools and other regions with american diasporas ?

@@dustgreylynx Nee, ganz normale Sache.

@@dustgreylynx No. German Cheerleading is spreading quite far. Most of the teams see it as a competitive sport. A lot of them originated from carnival dancecorps and "Funken"-guards, that wanted to dance all year round and try their dance skills in something that was not carnival related and found cheerleading to be a fun alternative. And as a side note: The German carnival girls dancecorps have been called out as being extremely sexist many a times. So I don't see much of a difference there.

On first glance this is right: Both sports are mostly done by girls and young women in girly outfit and is somehow taken not so serious by many as the "real teams/the Elferrat respectively", which are male dominated and only supported by these women. But that is only half of the story. Today both sports exist on high level with lots of quite tough athletic elements, some cheer teams are independent from male teams and include also boys, as well as Gardetanz, which has its own championship. Further, any tough athletics can improve self and body confidence and finally there is some political aspect behind the Gardetanz: Make fun of soldiers and their robotic movements and celebrating carnevalistic freedom. In that sense there is also some empowering element. It might be true, that both sports originated from a rather sexist view of female body, but they developed their own life. If cheerleaders let their teammates fly who do then crazy somersaults and being safely and easily catch after by a group of strong girls and shouting loud, this can be also seen as an anti-stereotype image.
