️Pink Diamond is my FAV character BUT one of the REAL (albeit unintentional) antagonists. And here's WHY: -Begged for a colony for years only to immediately start a rebellion because running one was “so dull,” as she put it. -Abandoned Spinel on an isolated rock for 6000 years and informed literally no one. Spinel loyally waited for a Diamond who would never return. -Hide behind a fake persona and made lies that caused the deaths of countless gems for a war that started because she was too childish to tell the Diamonds how she actually felt. It would have been more noble to rebel AS A DIAMOND than to shield herself behind a fake identity. -Faked her shattering and ordered Pearl to keep it a secret from her closest friends for 5000 years, causing Pearl to delve into an obsession to keep said secret. -After faking her death, allowed MORE gems to become corrupted after the grieving Diamond Authority enacted vengeance on their "fallen" sister. -Caused innocent Rose Quartz gems to be bubbled for thousands of years, forever frozen in time. -Bubbled Bismuth for wanting to shatter the enemy, but was fine with portraying the lie that she shattered a Diamond. Never told anyone she bubbled Bismuth. -Allowed Greg and Pearl to fight over her. Lead Pearl on, making Pearl MORE obsessive. -She doesn’t see humans as an equal. "I love humans, you're all so funny," and completely disregards Greg's emotions. Everyone who enters her life, is a commodity. -Causes literally, and I mean, literally anyone who comes in contact with her directly or indirectly suffering and heartache of not only losing her, but to have to kill your own and for the freedom that gems fought/died for to be based on lies. -Ran away from all her problems. Never took responsibly. Abandons everyone for them to become Steven problem. I don't hate Pink. Never have. In fact she's been one of favorite characters BECAUSE she's so complex in the way she never intentionally did bad, but MANY decisions had terrible domino effect outcomes. Also, this wasn't meant to dismiss the other diamonds' actions, just my own personal analysis on one character in particular. 🤗 Have a different take on Pink? ok personally I'm more sympathetic towards pink because I think at the end of the day Steven universe is about ending the cycle of abuse and pink never really had a relationship that wasnt inherently kind of toxic besides with Greg, because he was the only one who treated her as an equal. I genuinely dont think shes an inherently cruel person, but the behaviours taught to her by white and blue and yellow made her a toxic one. she kept too many lies and she hurt a lot of people and she did terrible things,( ie, spinel) but I think that all of that was just all result of the unhealthy environment she was raised in, and unconsciously perpetuated. she didnt have ill intentions! And there were things she did that helped people. that obviously doesn't excuse anything though. shes definitely in a solid moral gray, though. idk I just feel like it's really not as black and white as people think.

Well see the thing is when you think about it that way the reason Yellow and Blue were abusive is because of White and I assume that someone did the same to White. At some point you have to stop and say that their actions are their own fault, yes you had a shit environment but you can't blame all of your actions on what other people did to you. Because at the end of the day it's your decision. And you definitely shouldn't justify someones abusive behavior towards you because they were raised in a toxic environment.

Izzy is Neon I don’t understand how people consider her a bad person when she made Steven, saved the earth and also you can make the argument that her having Steve’s saved the galaxy so her good out ways her bad by a lot.

I don't believe Pink Diamond is a villain. Though it isn't clear how gems age, its very clear that they do have different stages of maturity. Just look at amethyst when she was rebooted. She looked and acted like a toddler trying to understand the world but grew over time. Pink diamond was childish because she was the embodiment of a CHILD. We saw when she acted like a brat. We saw when she got bored of responsibilities. We saw her excitement over new things. But after all the abuse and starting to understand new things outside of the diamonds' teachings, she grew up. She saw how gems and organic life had feelings. I'll try to tackle all the points in the pinned comment - She again was seen more as a child at this point. This is like getting upset at a child that begs for a new playset for months and then when they finally get it, they get bored of it and never touch it after a few times. - If she remembered how she left spinel, she probably wouldn't have been able to get back or was too scared to. Before she grew out of being a "child", spinel would have been seen as a toy or similar to a dog. Yes we see that she wasn't. But if you're a kid and your "parents" tell you something is lower than you or isn't even comparable to you, then you see it as such. Spinel was the family dog you leave behind when you leave home. It still waits for you at the door but you're too busy now to come home. I do agree though, she should've informed someone about Spinel on homeworld and that was a mess up on her part. - Pretty sure Pink did try to talk to the diamonds but they didn't listen to her. We see how they disregarded anything she'd try to say with Steven whether it be in his dreams or with actual dialogue/actions between them. I haven't see the episode in awhile but I'm pretty sure there was a flat color animation sequence of pink trying to talk to them and getting shut down too but I might be wrong. She was most likely scared of being seen as less of a threat as the diamonds know her as being rebellious and different than them. She'd be scared of being thrown back into the dungeon. A gem lower than them would have caught them more by surprise and fellow rebellious gems would have seen her as an equal. Something she wanted to feel. Other rebel may have not trusted her as a diamond either. - Look at rebooted pearl. She was made to be obsessive and wanting to please. No matter how much Greg tried to push her away or stop her, she continued to serve. The only way to break that was if Greg became something else. Rose quartz/Pink diamond did not tell pearl what to do, her 'master' did. Pearl wasn't obsessing to keep the secret after so long but the function of her gem was. When she failed to keep the secret by having Steven find out himself, she was happy. Pink should have been more thoughtful with what she did but I don't see how it would make her a villain. - The diamonds' vengeance seemed instantaneous and out of the blue. Even if Pink could somehow bubble the whole world to protect all the gems, I doubt she would have had the time. No way she would've know known that they'd do that unless garnet warned her. - She probably didn't know about the bubbled rose quartz. It would've happened after the shattering. We don't know the time span between the shattering and the mass corruption so its hard to tell if they're from earth or ones that would've been transported else where. - Portraying a death and wanting to actually kill another is two different things. Pink didn't want to shatter anyone unless it was absolutely necessary. She shattered herself to stop living two lives, to focus on earth and the gems that wanted to be free from homeworld, and to probably keep the diamonds from searching for her. Bismuth was not as kind-hearted and only wanted to protect her side of the war. Pink should have released Bismuth after the war and told the truth but was most likely scared of conflict. A very human thing to do and not instant villain. - From what I remember, Rose/Pink never lead Pearl on? We never saw Rose do this and only have Pearl's word on how they were. If she were truly obsessive then she would take friendly gestures differently from a typical friend. I think Pearl was in love and saw Rose's actions as love towards her. I might be wrong but every interaction between Rose and Pearl seemed platonic on Rose's side. Pearl often initiated any conflict as well with Greg. - This is a glaring negative trait on Pink. I'll admit she didn't understand humans or their emotions very well and would be insensitive with her words. She wasn't taught how to interact with others not like her however and can't be expected to be perfect when she finally finds someone she believes she loves. A lot of gems have this mindset however. Pearl was like this at the start and so are other homeworld gems. - She did hurt a lot of characters emotionally and physically. I'm not going to compare her to the other diamonds however but I'll compare her to Pearl. We don't see Pearl as a villain but a broken character. She has hurt or upset every character she's come in contact with in some shape or form. She also was given time to redeem herself and fix the problems she caused. I believe if Pink had been shown trying to fix her problems we would be less harsh. We aren't given that however so we just have to assume she didn't which isn't all that fair. She lied about who she was to all the gems that fought along side her but that's all she lied about. The war wasn't based off lies, just their leader was. She truly wanted to liberate earth and her fellow rebels and wasn't lying to the others about that. - Having a human/gem child has never been done before. Pink wanted to have a baby because she found them so fascinating and wanted to give another life to the world. Unless Gartnet told her before Greg and Pink decided to do the deed to have Steven, I don't think she knew she'd disappear when Steven was born until she was pregnant. Also we have to assume that earth life was rather peaceful between the war and the wanting of a baby. There's no signs of any problems from homeworld or her past issues other than the corrupt gems. How would she know all her problems would get thrown onto her child in the span of a few years? Basically, Pink is not a villain but just a catalyst. The two are similar but not the same thing. ALSO I REALLY LOVE YOUR ANIMATION AND IM SORRY FOR WRITING A WHOLE ASS NOVEL. If you feel I was off about anything, I'd love to hear it mm

Rose is still my favourite character. Such a compassionate being, even if her past stemmed from not such a great place. I love her, and all her faults. Love the grey area

@@sanvee6843 seriously , because pink/rose was good at the start of the series , we slowly started to see her past and we forgot the things she has been through and went looking at the bad things she did as a diamond , she was influenced by her other diamonds and did things like them because there was no one there to stop them . But still there are people hating on her and saying she's evil , forgetting every other good thing she did , and the fact she thought the diamonds were right at some points because that's how gems simply are , before she realised how wrong they were and decided to change . *Conclusion :* We thought she was "the most perfect character" , We found out she wasn't at the start , but she wanted to be better so she slowly changed , We started hating on her because she wasn't born perfect as we thought . Yellow diamond clearly told Steven while fixing a shattered gem _"i'm just fixing one of my horrible, horrible experiments , and i should start working on the cluster !"_ Yellow diamond is the one who made the cluster and the idea was originally made from Garnet , when she first fused , it gave the diamonds the idea of shattering gems , then putting them all together as one , which actually created the cluster .

my favorite parts: 0:03 this is just fun to look at. 0:06 i love how she snaps back into line. also can we appreciate the hair bounce- 0:11 the face she makes looks like she's getting sick of this. i love it. 0:16 she looks like she's mocking someone and i think that fits her personality well. it's pleasing to watch. i love the copies' faces, too. :> 0:26 that's a smooth transition! it's also pleasing to watch. i love the lingering eyes afterwards as well.

What people don’t realise is that Pink Diamond isn’t a bad person, she sacrificed everything in order to save earth. Even if that meant hurting the ones she loved.

Just over here laughing at the people who think asking for a colony, and then not wanting to complete it when you find out “HEY, the lives of other living beings aren’t ours to take, that’s fucked up!” is a sign that pink was immature and selfish. She saw value in life that is neither her own nor belongs to her, damn, how evil. Like, yeah she was an entitled brat who acted out of self interest a lot. The OTHER DIAMONDS didn’t care what she thought, so they tried to destroy it anyways. But yes it’s VERY SELFISH OF PINK TO WANT THE HUMANS TO LIVE!!

The diamonds Ignorant of what they were doing? No. Even now, they don’t understand the true value of Earth and their wrong doings. It was suppose to be a joke, but White still refers to others as ‘lower lifeforms’ until Steven corrects her. At this point, it feels like they’re trying to appease Steven vs actually believe. Look, I’ve just up and abandoned friends in the past. I just wanted them out of my life. And I’m not proud of that. But it doesn’t make me a villain. Granted, I can’t abandon someone for 6,000 years; but my point is, this big mistake doesn’t make her a villain. Everyone’s ‘reasonings’ for her being a villain are taken so out of context and honestly don’t do it for me. They really don’t. Know what this all sounds like to me? Mistakes made by someone who had no lead on how to live a better life or lead a revolt but did her best anyways. Rose/Pink has a medley of mistakes and accomplishments that just make her... HUMAN. And I think that makes her a wonderful character. The Diamonds, however? Murderers with full belief they are the strongest lifeforms and that their way of society is right. Up until one episode and a movie where they’ve ‘turned a new leaf and are so cute with the progress they made!’ It’s so dumb that Rose/Pink leaving Spinel behind was this catalyst to her being a villain. It really is.

I was surprised when the other diamonds weren't absolutely furious with pink after finding out she started the rebellion and faked her death , causing grief for the diamonds for thousands of years. I feel like the Steven universe movie totally butchered any character development or anything we learned about Pink to just give redemption to spinel. The hate on Pink is really unnecessary its as if everyone is forgetting Diamond days. What else bugs me is how the diamonds have redemption so easily but peridot's redemption took almost a whole season? They did pink dirty in this movie to introduce a character that should have been brought in earlier. It interrupted the whole progress of the series. Also the relationship between her and spinel sorta makes the complicated relationship between her and pearl look like nothing because she had someone who was special and then hurt. In my opinion, the movie has a lot of faults and I expected a lot more from it.

( Liz with a Smile)I feel like because its the MOVIE and we finally got something from the crewniverse after a hiatus that people just are sorta blind to its mistakes and are just happy they got something. I really don’t get why everyone is saying she is the monster. She is not there is a reason she acted like that As you see the Diamonds treated her horrible They locked her in the tower when she acted bad or did something wrong. It’s not fair that she gets all the hate.

It pisses me off how the fandom just "hates" Pink for her bad actions but ignore the other 3 Diamonds (who did things 1000x worse) and forgave them instantly because "UWU SPACE MOMS"

Why ya’ll saying pink is the villain? Do you all forget what the diamonds have done? Countless life are lost because of them..but because you guys saw them being redeemed means they’re okay now?? Sometrash 1 Nah I hate all the diamonds, they're all trash lol. The other diamonds are way worse but since Pink chose to make her own terrible decisions she's still a terrible person. She may have been abused by the other diamonds but that doesn't excuse her actions. (Also I really didn't want the diamonds to be redeemed, especially White Diamond. Sometrash 1 Pink only saved the earth because she found humans and the rest of the life on it 'entertaining'. She thought the life on earth was below her and just toys to give her amusement like Spinel was to her and also Greg. She literally said way back when that she found humans entertaining and seemed to imply that they didn't actually mean anything to her besides her source of enjoyment. Once she got bored of her "toys" like Spinel, and Pink Pearl, her colony, etc. She moved on to other things to stop her boredom. Honestly, her whole speech about finding the true value of life and how every little thing on the planet is special and amazing came off as superficial and manipulative to me. It just felt like she was only in it for the thrill and that she had a "fetish for humans" as one of commenters in this comment section said.

Why are people hating on Pink? Yeah, she did horrible things (such as beg for a colony later to abandon it and fake her scattering) but the diamonds probably treated her like a child, or like just abused or spoiled her! Before you attack me saying “she left spinel on a rock in the middle of nowhere for over 6,000 years and never came back or told anyone about her!” Well, let’s see an example, a child has a toy, who they loved and played with everyday, but soon as they started to grow up and see the real world they began to slowly ignore the toy, and soon, didn’t even care about the toy like they use to. Then the child moves out into the real world, and leaves the toy behind. It’s the same thing with Pink and Spinel, Pink adored Spinel, and Spinel adored Pink, but soon as Pink started to grow and want her own colony she started to grow tired of Spinel, and soon abandoned Spinel to go to Earth. Also, Pink took form of Rose Quartz, and finally met Greg and the human life form. She found them interesting, especially Greg, someone who treated her equally, and someone who loved her and so on. Then she got “pregnant” with Steven, now Pink/Rose knew that the child she was having will have to face the challenges and consequences. Yet, she still wanted to give Steven a life, like a normal human. Now since she’s gone and Steven is facing the thing’s she did, it kinda makes sense. But the real thing is, Pink isnt the antagonist, she was a child who didn’t know what consequences were or how to act properly. She was raised incorrectly, which is the Diamond’s fault. Pink doesn’t deserve all this hate!

First Nerea is so right and also We can't really blame her, PD finally got her colony so she knew she had to be mature but with Spinel who was so childish she know she couldn't do it with her still there and she couldn't just say that she doesn't want to be her friend bc the purpose of a spinel is to be the best friend to an assignated gem so if PD didn't want to be her friend anymore that would mean that Spinel would be considered defective because she couldn't do her purpose so she would have been shattered so its true that leaving her in a garden alone wasn't the smartest decision but if she would taken her to homeworld to leave her there alone she would have either be shattered or she would have suffered the same fate as Pink Pearl.

Not really cuz if you think about it the Diamonds most likely gave Pink Spinel after they took her original Pearl. I mean think about it Pink Pearl is basically her best friend and they probably had a lot of fun together and now think about like this your parents take away your best friend and then give you two new people who you're supposed to get along with one to to make sure you follow the rules in the other to be forced friend upon you. You don't really like either of them but you tolerate them so that you don't get in trouble and also Pink leaving Spinel in the garden was probably to keep her safe because Spinel''s basically the equivalent to a jester and who wants to bring someone like that to a war zone where they could get shattered or exposed Pink as being Rose Quartz.

As much as I love the animation here, I have to put in my two cents on the whole issue with Pink being “The Real Villain” Pink diamond is a flawed person. This is strongly established. Diamonds are not perfect. She is not perfect. However, people hating her so much for actions that were done in her youth just seems... silly. Pink Diamond, Rose Quartz, became such a good person even with her flaws. After leaning about fusion with different gems, she wanted to fight for them. The gems who were flawed in homeworld’s eyes, she adored. She did anything she could to do right by them. She didn’t LET bad things happen to everyone, I don’t understand why people have come to the conclusion she didn’t give a damn about those around her? Bad things happen whether we want it to or not, it’s up to us to fight it as best we can. That’s what she did, and the diamonds everyone seems to forgive (who have slain countless billions for n o t h i n g) are the ones who LITERALLY CORRUPTED NEARLY EVERY GEM ON EARTH. That was them, not pink, and pink could only save- literally- the closest gems to her. As in the ones she could grab at a moment’s notice to shield. Pink could have just fought for the prettiness and uniqueness of earth for her own peace of mind, but she chose to love gem kind on a level no diamond had before. Before receiving the colony to learn more about what life is really like, what do any of us expect her to be? Perfect? Like White Diamond wanted her to be? Perfect, like we want her to be? Spinel’s story doesn’t really... feel natural, to me. As a writer, I don’t think I could excuse spinel’s willingness to destroy a planet full of life, just because somebody basically told her to stand in a corner for 6000 years because she wasn’t the kind of friend they needed. Like, really. She was betrayed and it was deeply uncool, but pink couldn’t have gone to get spinel even if she wanted to. Destroyed warps, remember? And I don’t think pink would have expected her to stay still for that long either- since he was constantly ignoring Pink’s requests for some distance. And again, she was MADE to be her friend and MADE to be a cheering up tool. She’s just doing what she was made to do, and pink really isn’t into that. If she has issues, spinel didn’t seem inclined to do anything other than entertain given that when Steven was upset she just. Performed. That isn’t what people in distress need, so why wouldn’t pink seek out friendship with others who might be more inclined to understand her issues and let her speak about it... like a pearl? And, if you think back to the old days where rich little white girls could only be friends with rich little white girls... that’s what the relationship between the two makes me think of. “Her cut is perfect and she’s pink, as well.” To me, sounds similar to “her lineage is impeccable and she’s white like us.” Keep in mind the show and movie were taking us BACK in time, farther and farther to see what Used To Be rather than What Became. Pink isn’t perfect, but nobody is. She did her best, and it is what it is. Don’t forget we’re looking at her character arc BACKWARDS.

Exactly. We were seeing how she acted when she got almost whatever she wanted in the flashbacks. If you were so used to getting just about whatever you wanted so that you would be happy and leave somebody alone, wouldn’t you be extremely spoiled and bratty, like how Pink acted in the flashbacks? She had never been taught how to be responsible or mature by the other diamonds, so of course she wouldn’t act the way they wanted her to.

You have a good point, but I see her as more of a post-childish person. Yes, abandoning Spinel was a really-really bad choice, but giving up something is usual for the sake of something else. Like giving up her Rose form to become Steven was a neutral choice, giving up her powers of being a diamond is neutral. She had to grow up and move away from childish things that distracted her from her work. We all have playing moments and we all have working moments and it's all life. I wouldn't say she isn't a villain but I won't say she is a villain. She stands at the neutral place.

Pink is that one toxic friend you had during your middle school or highschool years and one day you meet up after a while and see she genuinely wants to change and be a new, better person.

And because pink/rose was good at the start of the series and we slowly started to see her past we forgot the things she has been through and went looking at the bad things she did as a diamond , she was influenced by her other diamonds and did things like them because there was no one there to stop them . But still there are people hating on her and saying she's evil , forgetting every other good thing she did , and the fact she thought the diamonds were right at some points because that's how gems simply are , before she realised how wrong they were and decided to change .

is anyone gonna talk about the incredible improvement over the year?? like not saying the old version was terrible but you really improved in not only your art style but the proportions, animation and even developed on from the initial idea. the way how PD looks to the other PDs when the singer goes 'i read all the lyrics' is so symbolic and really adds to the meme and also describes Pink's backstory very well just through action. i also love the way how you animated her to mockingly sing 'la la la'. tbh i'm really conflicted on PD (she's a terrible person but i can understand her but not condone her and think she could've done things VERY differently to avoid the bad things she directly and indirectly caused, but she's not solely responsible for everything bad that happened in the show i mean...the other diamonds are literal dictators XD) but anyway this is really good!

There's something so magnetic about Pink's enraged glowing eyes as she stands on that battlefield, plus the diamonds being visible after fading into Rose is just *chef's kiss*

I love her so much, she's such a complex character-

It's sucks most older people in the audience forget that just because one is an antagonist doesn't make them evil. Pink is the perfect example of how someone who went through abuse and neglect, will sometimes hurt others trying to better than their abusers, which just makes their situation so much more complicated, and often sadder because they don't know how to break that cycle on their own. (S/o to SU for portraying me so well in such a pitiable character lmao. I just want to be better than my dad, but I still end up hurting others and it sucks and I need help to analyse my actions)

Spinel wouldn't have screamed no if she hadn't been left behind by Pink. Pink could have had Greg (or Steven after a while) hang out with her, and she could have told SOMEONE about the garden so Spinel wasn't alone. Even if Spinel wasn't the same, she wouldn't be alone.

- Pink Diamond is practically royalty in the gem world and all royals have a purpose, Pink is a diamond that didn’t have a purpose. White, Yellow and Blue didn’t give her a purpose and a colony because they felt she was unfit to rule a colony. It’s like when you beg your parents for a pet and they tell you your not ready for one. Pink wanted to prove herself so they could see she was responsible. Sadly that means leaving your childish persona for a grown up one (I.e Spinel). Spinel is the definition of a toy, an object made for pleasure and entertainment. Pink enjoyed playing and laughing with her, and the other Diamonds enjoyed that Pink had someone to play with instead of bothering them. When Pink found out that Blue and Yellow we’re giving her a colony she was happy they were trusting her and knew she had to be responsible if she wanted to keep it. You can’t stay a child forever the point to life is growing up and that’s what Pink did. I’ve met people like Spinel where if you don’t pay a single attention to them they lash out uncontrollably. Pearl gave Pink every single idea which is was what led to the Gem War, Greg, and later on Steven. When Pink said “I wish I could just be there” Pearl was going to warp with her then told her she shape-shifted into a Rose Quartz When Pearl said let’s head back Pink was going to go back to Moon Base but then Pearl said “Let’s look at Earths others features” Which eventually led to the Gem War once Pink saw the beauty of Earth. Pink loved Pearl but didn’t really know how to show it because of the Diamonds, they gave her a fucked up definition of love. It was only till she met Greg she understood. Pearl’s jealousy of Pink and Greg only brought them closer. If Pearl never had tried to make Greg come up with fusion by fusioning into Rainbow Quartz. The relationship would have continued to be one sided. Pearl screwed up her own relationship. Every idea you think was Pink’s was actually Pearl’s but because this a reverse redemption your piling (not you specifically) everything on Pink which isn’t fair and personally hypocritical since other gems and the diamonds have done worser things then Pink. Your looking at Spinel (not you again) and making fake reasons to why Pink is a “bad person”. Personally I believe Spinel is way more immature then Pink if Pink did take Spinel she would have been A.) Captured by White and made into a puppet B.) [ Lαvender Lovefox ] that’s the thing Rebecca Sugar even said pink isn’t the good guy and she was a horrible person. And pink wasn’t the only diamond to be abused yes she had it the most but blue and yellow was frightened of white which happen in abuses and pink knows what she did was wrong and Steven has to face the fact. Why Is this my favourite animation ever

I am fond of Pink Diamond for what a capricious child they made her after 5/4 season (I don’t remember). If she had been made the way Rose was imagined, she would be a terribly boring character))))

Something I’ve wondered about: the song says I’ll never sing along. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to animate the people beside the main character singing (while looking shocked or angry at the main character) because the main character isn’t singing. So they sing, and the main refuses to sing. Therefore making it more lyrically accurate
