Ойын-сауық

What was life like for ordinary working-class children living in the suburbs or on the fringes of Australian cities in the early 1900s? How different or similar was their day to yours?
Step into the shoes of the Youngein children, Jim and Dolly, from Susannah Place, Sydney and find out how they lived.
As soon as it starts to get dark, you probably switch on the lights. We take electricity for granted these days, but over a hundred years ago people relied on gas or candle lights. Electric lights were only just beginning to be used and they were very costly and still a novelty for most people.
In Susannah Place, the Youngeins had gaslights for the downstairs rooms, but used candlelight upstairs. See if you can find out when electric lights in homes became common in Australia.
