Growing Tobacco at Home 05-06-2010
This is my second attempt at growing some tobacco at home. This is the tobacco after about 6 weeks from planting the seeds. They were started in trays on a warming pad until they germinated. They have been kept under a light for about 16 hours a day every day since then. This is just an update to show their progress and I will post further videos as time goes by. Thanks --- TMFA

Nice looking plants and very interesting video. Am growing some this year for the first time. Had over a hundred to start with, but have worked the numbers down to about 50 now. They are about 5 inches tall. Friends are more than eager to grab up the extras. Had a little yellow like you were talking about and I used some Epsom Salts. Yellow went way pretty quick. Also helped my tomatillo starts. Will follow your progress. Good Luck this season.
@traffa2 The root systems on tobacco plants are pretty shallow. They do not need a huge pot as they are easily separated and do not grow to the bottom like other plants. Thus there is no root damage to worry about. The nice thing about using these plastic pots is that you can easily remove the plant with soil intact. Then the plant gets planted with the soil which helps reduce shock to the plant in its new home. This is the way we grow our entire garden from seed as well.
@traffa2 Thanks for the comment. I used a fish emulsion to feed the plants. It works really well and is all natural. It does stink pretty bad though. Tobacco is a lot like tomatoes. They are heavy eaters and need feeding just like tomatoes. When they start getting yellow they need nutrients. After a few days they will get green again. Another thing that really helps is giving then a little sprinkle of Epsom salts once in a while.
@thomasbigfoott Epsom Salts eh? I read something about that but wasn't sure. I ended up separating all the plants last night into their own pots. Gave them a good does of organic fertilizer as well. One thing I heard from another grower was to remove them from under the florescent lights for a little bit as that can sometimes cause them to turn yellow and white. Like getting a sun burn I guess. If the fertilizer doesn't do the trick I will try some of the salts.
I use 1/4 cup to 1 gallon of water and then watered them thoroughly one time with the mix.
@nebhazard6 They are pretty easy to transplant. I started mine on those things too. I just carefully loosened the soil and separated them. The roots are very small at that stage so it is not too hard to separate them.
@Ti88bi I am new to this but the way I will do it is with a homemade curing chamber.
@thomasbigfoott Thanks. I am finally getting around to doing it today.
@stpensaw86 I will be selling organic heirloom seeds after these plants have finished seeding. I Will post a video of seeds for sale when they are ready.
I hope mine will grow up that well

If you have two to a pot, why not just plant the pots? Called 'plunge' pots. Or you could use fibre pots and simply plant them. No root damage that way. Cutting the bottom off the plastic pots would help root development. I have previously planted stuff in foam boxes then cut the bottom off before planting in the ground. Though fibre pots are the best choice or even make paper mache pots is you want.
@jefferyrowe1960 That sucks. That is what happened to my first batch. Keep us informed
@thomasbigfoott BTW. How much Epsom Salts did you use per plant? Thanks.
Great vid. What about the fermentation? How can I ferment the leafs at home? Should I make a home made curing chamber? Other way?
@Notagayname12 Never used them. I like to add liquid.
How did you transplant these? I have about 4 little plants on one of those peat pellets so how can i seperate them? Thanks
@PipeFriendCHS Lets us know your progress once they get going.
How do you store tobacco for a couple of years ??
where did you buy less than 200 seeds in one go
