In this video I visit the allotment to discuss how use environmesh and pheromone traps to avoid Leek Moth damage.

Hi Rachel - just enjoyed watching your video on the leek moth. We have just had to lift our leeks a couple of weeks ago, as they started to deteriorate and found what we call is the allium leek miner (in Berkshire UK). I thought this was the same as your moth, but looking at the great pictures you posted now realise that they are different. Thank you for posting this video.

I got leek moth last year. I cleaned the caterpillars out on individual plants with a small brush and then soil drenched with neem oil. I got some produce out of it. Whereas my near neighbour lost the lot. However. I use molasses to kill codling moths on my 2 apple trees, and I noticed that a lot of different species of moths are attracted by this 'trap'. So maybe it works on leek moths because I grew onions over Winter from October last year and had no trouble with insects at all. And, this was in an adjacent bed. Also I have grown spring onions this year in another bed, and have had no trouble at all with anything. Apart from them growing too big to fast! Maybe worth a try?

There are quite a few environmesh sellers listed. How much do you pay per meter? Can you name your supplier, please?

Hi there, I have bought from a few different supplies - environmesh is a brand try looking at 'veggie mesh' as that is a more generic term. Our videos are not endorsed by anyone. I have bought a few different types. Hope that helps!

Thanks for replying. I’ve tried a couple of types. I bought one from Amazon for about £20 for 30m, if I recall. Also bought from a garden centre at about £1.50 a metre. Totally different quality, as you’d expect for the price. The cheaper one has sort of done the job for three years but I’m wondering if it’s worth going for the stronger stuff for longevity. Just wondered if you used the better quality. It’s bound to get damaged one way or the other.

@@cameltrain100 They normally have a density - g/sqm written on the package. Where I have used the netting attached to a frame it has been in place for about 6-7 years before looking tatty. Stuff that is put over hoops not quite so long as it is moved much more. Using a lighter to seal any areas you cut does work well and you can hand sew small tears or holes back together with string. I have many bought the environmesh brand and some called 'veggie mesh' from amazon and they have been slightly different so worth looking at the density.

Good point. Thanks. Mine have degraded far sooner than 6 years on a frame. Perhaps that’s why it was so cheap. Out of interest, how do you fix them? I’ve been using staples which also does not now seem like a good idea.
