Those above ground roots on the corn are adventitious roots, which stabilize the stalk. You can mound up soil or mulch around them to help them dig into the soil. I've grown corn once before, but I'm trying three sisters for the first time this year with Oaxacan green dent corn.

The music is perfect with your voice and ambient garden sounds, making for a relaxing viewing experience. Once, when squash bugs invaded, I made char directly in garden. Bugs died.

I was just driving around running errands wondering how your three sisters were doing and came home to find a notification you blogged about it! I love that you thought the tassle bits were worms. I panicked the first time I grew corn for the same reason. I was like noooo! You're not getting my corn!!! I cant believe your butternut got attacked by squash bugs. Theyve always been the one squash they woukdnt touch in my garden. Even when there were tens of thousands of bugs out there. Maybe a I grew a resistant variety? Anyway, try planting Nasturtiums with your squash. I usually do about 5 or 6 surrounding each plant and have great luck. I should probably quit telling people that and make a video already. I'm so happy to see things going well in your garden. Let us know what you find to prevent corn worms. They took out a whole crop once. I hate them!

If you plant nastursiums, which are edible flowers, around your squash it is supposed to keep the bugs away. I am trying it myself this year because they always get mine and kill the vines.

Awesome success! My mother used to say if there was a worm on the corn then you knew it was good corn. If you find a worm has nibbled on your corn just cut off the bad spot with a sharp knife.😋

I looked those roots up (as I have them as well on my glass gem corn this year). It’s called rootless corn syndrome. Can be caused by hot, dry surface soils, shallow planting depths, compact soils, and loose or cloddy soil conditions.

Those bugs are a pain, but actually, what probably killed your squash (and all of mine) is a moth that lays eggs which when hatched burrow into the stem and as they grow they kill the vascular system of the plant. Get some Bt to spray! Your corn is beautiful!!!

(I’m always wanting to learn, so I’m asking this in curiosity, not in argument) what do you see that makes you think it’s vine borer instead of squash bug? I do need to get some BT for the corn ear worms too, so I’ll use it on the squash as well.
