    I am impressed! I bet that your home-grown pineapples are far more aromatic compared to those which have been shipped thousands of miles to reach the UK. The supermarket pineapples were grown in ideal climatic conditions, but they lose so much flavour and aroma en-route to our shores and when sitting on the supermarket shelves.

    yes it was a very good tasting pineapple! The plants are pretty versatile... and will grow in quite a range of climatic conditions. the only really main requirement is frost free, (which is why they are generally confined to tropical climates), and well draining soil.👍🏻

    Hi, I'm a first year polytunnel, fruit and veg grower in Chester Cheshire area, I'm loving growing my first watermelons, melons, and now I see you can grow pineapples. I have a question, at the end of the video you cut the top off the first pineapple, if you wanted to grow from that top, do you have to put it as it is in water, or do you need to twist the cut fruit part off first? or do you plant that straight in the soil, I wondered if you did whether you risk the fruit part going mouldy? You demonstrated almost everything except this part, if you can help advise I'd be grateful thanks.

    Generally they are moved outside around May time. Sometimes earlier depending on the weather. Then moved back to the Greenhouse by the end of October. You could keep them inside the greenhouse the whole time, but I find they take up quite a bit of space when i’m sowing summer crops in there, and so am quite happy to get them out of the way.👍🏻

    Hi, wondering if you can give some tips? I’ve tried many times to root a top, and it always goes mouldy, I clean the fruit off, I’ve tried the water method to grow roots and then plant, I’ve tried just putting them in the soil and every time the leaves all come loose turn brown and grow mould. What am I doing wrong? What’s your soul composition?

  • @gotropicaluk8362

    @gotropicaluk8362

    2 жыл бұрын

    i can’t really say that there’s anything technical to it. Make sure you root them during the summer, with plenty of warmth, light and ventilation. A Greenhouse is ideal for that or a sunny window sill. The soil needs to be acidic and very well draining. So mix potting grit into it. Keep it just damp, not soaking wet. Don’t use a pineapple top from a fruit that is too ripe. You can also let the top dry out a few days before planting… think that’s pretty much it. 🤔 All the best!👍🏻

  • @garycard1456
    @garycard14563 жыл бұрын

    Are pineapples adaptable to the lower humidity levels of the typical UK summer without experiencing leaf scorch? The Victorian-era 'pineapple pits' maintained high humidity levels. I have found that humidity-loving tropicals fare better under a shadecloth in the summer to lower UV. Otherwise, new leaf buds dry out and fail. This is what I have found, anyway. High humidity sort of acts like a 'moisturiser' for humidity-loving tropicals, and it mitigates against high solar UV when tropicals have been indoors throughout the colder months with minimal UV exposure. Even better, an extra large clear polythene bag works wonders, I have found, to encourage new vegetative growth for humidity-loving tropicals. Temperatures inside the clear polythene bag get very comfy (it acts in the same way as a proper glass greenhouse), and the evaporation and evapotranspiration is trapped, raising the humidity to sauna-like levels. My Nam Doc Mai mango is loving its polythene 'greenhouse', as are my Mediterranean citrus plants, which have since put out lots of new leaf growth. Because my plants have been indoors for much of the year, I find that the strong solar UV, combined with our lower humidity levels of summer (UK summers rarely see rainforest-like humidity levels) slows down the rates of delicate new leaf bud formation. To prevent the temperatures inside the polythene bags from rising to insanely high levels (40+ degrees C), I ensure that my 'bagged up' plants are under a 40% UV-blocking shadecloth.

    any plant that has spent most of its life under class with suffer sunburn when brought straight out in the summer. i always have tried to keep my plants outside as much a physically possible... the growth will of course be slower than in a greenhouse, but it will be stronger. to keep the humidity up on pineapples, make sure there is always water among the leaves. this is how they naturally collect it... even tho the soil it self can be on the dry side. 👍🏻

    @@edark94 The seeds aren’t sold as named varieties, only as seedlings of a variety. Because the seed i got was from mexican avocado plants, the plants will show similar cold hardiness.
