Jason, great idea to put the brooders in the smaller building. It would be fun to name the new hatchery and maybe Penelope can paint a sign. How about The Hatchery House or The Hatchery Hut. Your followers would send in a lot of fun name suggestions. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

A good job, those chicks will like it. I remember ordering 200 chicks as a 12 year old, I was listening to my crystal radio one night, and heard an ad for baby chicks at a penny each, I miss those days, and those prices.

Man, I just built a brooder VERY similar to yours with the same, drop down wall feature for easy clean out! You did a nice job! Predators are the reason you don't use a big stall as a brooder. It's way too hard to rat/raccoon/mink proof it. The other issue is mess. Chicks create an enormous amount of dust/dander that gets all over EVERYTHING. Your barn would be covered in the stuff and it gets all over your equipment/wood/tools, etc. The best solution is a dedicated, outdoor set up for brooding. I haven't gotten there yet because it's a big commitment to do. Also, I just got one of those milwaukee narrow crown staplers too! I used it to put up insulation in a workshop, but I found it's awesome for hardware cloth like you mentioned. Very happy with it.

Excellent job! The small part of the top that wasn't screened would have been great for it to be hinged so that when you feed and pull the waterer in and out you wouldn't have to take the entire roof off. Those chicken babies like to jump!

Wow, I really like the way you designed the brooder for the meat balls! I like that draw latch and how simple it will be to clean it out. Nice job Jason! It was fun to watch you build it. It should work well for you in the shed where you want to raise the meat birds. They will be protected from the rats. I had mice chew through the OSB I had for my chicken brooder so I had to put plywood up to cover the holes they had chewed in it.

I had my chicks in a stable for a few years with no problems but last year rats found them and took every one of them. I made a temporary brooder to put in the stall for the replacement chicks last year. This year, I'm working on another that I'm building on an old trailer bed. The plan is to use it as a mobile coop for some of my egg layers in the back field after the chicks are out of it. That's the plan anyway...time will tell. 😊

Jason, love how you build things, great info for a 58 year old homesteader who misses her daddy every day. He could build anything, and I try to remember what he did, but he died in '91. The memory ain't what it used to be baby. And the frogs, oh Lord! No doubt, I had a friend visiting last spring, and as we went into the house they were like, "what is that noise?" I said what noise? Was the frogs, they had never heard it before, cracked me up, I told them they needed a country life.
