Growing Lithops from Seeds ONE YEAR UPDATE

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Also know as STONE Plants, Lithops are easy to grow from seeds. It's keeping them alive is the tricky part. They have been exposed to frost and rain and are growing happily in a Zone 9 area.

Oh wow look at all those gorgeous little lithops you've grown from seed, so many. I just love them. The new ones you purchased have such a glorious colour. I adore these plants especially when they flower. I too was amazed at how hardy they actually are. Mine were outside over winter with some protection , as in sitting on a shelf against the side of the house. Happy gardening

I love all of your videos by the way. You deserve many more views than you get. I love succulents and grow quite a few myself, not nearly as many as you do tho I hope to one day, and your videos are the only videos about succulents I watch. You have such a charismatic personality and your enthusiasm and passion for succulents is infectious. Please show off your Echeveria more! They are my favorite plants and I got into them because my fiancé’s last name is Echeverria and she bought my first one for me years ago!

Love this video as I am a new mummy to Lithops. I was too scared by all the over complicating that ppl make to own sooner. I have seeds I wish to try planting now that I feel more confident! I especially love your pot of adult ones, it is displayed beautifully!

In the wild, Lithops hold on to their seed pods until the rainy season. That's when they open up to release them from the pods. This is why when they're still young, they need plenty of water to grow fast and store up enough water for the coming dry season. A deep enough pot is necessary to give room for the roots to grow where water is stored.

South East Asia has two seasons. Wet and dry. During the wet season, water the dry lithops. Let the soil dry between watering. During the dry season, do not water the lithops. They already have enough water stored in their fat bodies to last the whole dry season, unless they become wrinkled, which means they need water. Then give a good soak and drain. But if temperature is high (above 25°C | 77°F), do not water. Wait till temperature go below these temperatures or water at night to give plenty of time to dry. They need a lot of light. Morning sun is best and avoid direct afternoon sun. If they start getting leggy, that means they don't get enough light.

You should not water them during summer unless the temp at night is below 70f, sorry not sure what that is in Celsius if that’s what you use.

The only time I water my lithops just like my other succulents is when I see wrinkly leaves. I really believe it's the soil mix that makes the difference. Rocks that contain a lot of holes like decomposed granite, scoria, basalt, which can hold some organic matter is suitable for lithops. My cat litter soil mix doesn't have any of these rocks, but it has a lot of coconut coir which keeps the moisture in, but the outside is dry for the lithops roots not to rot on contact.

People always say they only water lithops 3 times a year or something ridiculous like that but they are doing it wrong. I water mine every 7-10 days during the growing season and have probably 80 or so. They love water, just like any plant. They just don’t like to stay wet.

Agreed. The overcomplication of lithop and mesemb care in general is bit of a psyop in my opinion. I come from a different type of agriculture that ppl are notorious for overcomplicating just so they can pretend like they're some type of master grower. It's silly and turns ppl off of collecting them which is a real shame

Depends on your climate. Humidity temperature and overall weather will matter when growing them. I'm from Europe and you cannot water them during their growth until they shed the leafs.

Exactly! I even water mine (just a few drops of water) even when they are spliting and I discovered that the new leaves get a bigger size than the old ones. In nature, even in dry areas, you dont get scheduled waterings. As long a we have a well draining soil (mineral) should be okay
