How to store dahlia tubers over winter
Dahlias
Dahlias start flowering in July and will continue to flower until the first frost, so they have a very long flowering season.
Their flowers come in many sizes from the tiniest pompons to the giant dinner-plate varieties, there are several shapes, including the round ball shaped decorative varieties, the spiky cactus types, the delicately pretty waterlilies and the pin-cushion shaped anemones.
They come in every colour apart from blue, and there are dahlias that reach 9 feet / 3 metres tall, whilst others only reach 18 inches / 40 centimetres.
So there is a dahlia suitable for every garden, and they can even be grown in pots.
Geoff and Heather have been growing dahlias for many years and use the different shapes and sizes to help create a tiered effect in their garden in Cheshire. Together with salvias, fuchsias, and bedding plants they have managed to create a riot of summer colour.
Each September they open their garden to the public as part of the U.K. National Garden Scheme.
In this video, and the other videos in the series, they show you how they manage to do this, providing guidance on how to grow perfect dahlias.

I've just come across your December episode at the end of November 2022 from the Niagara region in southern Ontario. I just grew my first dahlias this summer and what an incredible display of colour and blooms they provided. I didn't even know I could over winter them to use again in the spring until now - so I'm very excited to put mine to bed and follow your diary from the beginning in January 2023. Thanks for making this series - it was a wonderful idea. Something to look forward to for the new year.

Glorious display of dahlias in 2021 :). Thank you for inspiration! I am relatively new to growing dahlias and haven’t had much success as of yet. But I am reluctant to give up and I am finding some great information and tips how I can improve on growing these magnificent plants in my garden ❤️ If you could go through growing dahlias from seed as well in the new season this would be great 👍🏻

Hi Selina. I do them in sessions rather than all in one go, so I don’t get repetitive stress problems. Overall I did them over 10 days this year including a few days off.

Hi Dorothy. A pot tuber is a plant that was grown from a cutting (ie no tuber) and kept in a pot without letting it flower. It will make a small tuber which can be grown in the garden next year.

Geoff, what is the temperature range inside your greenhouse over the winter? I'm going to miss my monthly dahlia fix.

Hi Dolly. The nighttime temperature is usually above zero centigrade, but in some parts of the winter it occasionally dips to minus 4 or 5. It rarely stays below zero in the daytime.
