I say do a third bowl of "chewed & spit-out" beans too. Enzyme treatment. I bet it would have a remarkable difference in taste like the old pooped ones from the past. *shrug* scientific basis of inquiry. Great stuff, love the work and your sharing.

If you mix in some crushed volcanic rock dust, it should take care of the iron deficiency. Heavy volcanic regions usually produce the best coffee.

Wow congratulations! Your berries were so much darker red than mine. Mine were a little sweet but mostly a little bitter and grassy. The coffee was awesome though! I was impressed with your yield though! Nice job Rob!

The botanic gardens in Rockhampton (the original gardens) have a number of coffee bushes growing as understory plants. When I lived there, I never thought to try the berries. I'd go up there whenever particular fruits were in season and feast. Loquats, Mangosteens, chocolate pudding trees, ice cream beans. It was great fun.

How exciting!! Looking forward to the next instalment in the series!

Yes, my garlic is up, I planted some onions, snow peas, kale, lettuce and brassicas. The fruits on my young mandarin tree and orange are ripening up nicely. I forgot to harvest my sweet potatoes so I will do that when that rain stop teasing us lol. btw, I love your Tahitian lime tree. I am going to add that to my list for future purchase. I know, gardening is addictive. I am building my food forest :)

Have you ever tried Cascara, also called Coffee Tea? It's made from the dried husk/fruit of the coffee berry. It has that cherry/plumb, sweet pepper flavor you mentioned when you tasted the berry. I know you like to experiment so dry some out and give it a try. I think you'll find it a pleasant and very different than coffee taste.

It's the new thing at Starbucks. Just nice to see the pulp is no longer considered waste and it's good for growers. Love all your vids. Came for the papaya and ginger and stayed for EVERYTHING else. Very inspiring.

Trying to grow coffee in Auckland for seven years. Finally sited it under some taro which is under macadamias/bananas... And voila! It took off. Hoping to see some fruit this coming summer now it's started growing. The site is also a warmer than typical microclimate (next to brick house, close to kitchen, close to greenhouse, banana compost/mulching). Thanks for the clip. Verified things, learnt new things. Excellent.

Not that I know of (North Island). I saw a news article years ago someone grew their own coffee in Christchurch! That sure raised my brows so I thought I'd try up here. I wish I knew the source of that article the man obviously has lessons for us all. Yes it's a special wee spot allright. I have macadamias already after a few years, 100 bananas on a stem first year I tried them. Taro corms filling out well, guavas - I even have feijoas there for some local flavor... But global warming y'know. Crops are gonna change, I'm trying to stay ahead of the bell curve by testing all kinds of things and replicating what works. Taro would make an excellent commercial crop here lots of island mates to help eat it. Consistency is what I'm seeking now, we had an unusually warm year from the warm oceans start of spring, will I get results next year? If I do, it's on! Also testing sugar here, so far so good, not as fast as it grows in queensland that's for sure. I think it's a brilliant permaculture plant you can rend it down with various fruits to make preserves. How good would that be!

I've seen some folks grow them as house plants & bring them out when it's warm. They may not produce enough berries for a cup of coffee but they do make a nice house plant.

For iron deficiency, you can drive few iron nails directly into the trunk, you will never have the issue with iron again.

Bought a coffee plant 2 weeks ago at the supermarket, unaware that it is an actual coffee plant. I just wanted some plants inside the house, but I was always reluctant to put plants inside my house because I do not get a lot of sunlight inside. So after a closer inspection when I got home, and after a little research on the web, I found out that it can actually produce the fruits that hold the coffee seeds. I am not going to let it grow big, and I can't put it outside due to our climate, but I am thinking about turning it into a bonsai-ish tree once it starts growing a bit larger. That it is if it is going to survive the conditions inside my house. Anyway, as always a big 👍 for sharing your knowledge !

Growing in the root pouches is a good idea, that should avoid problems with nematodes attacking roots. My kids grew a row of coffee trees from seed and we lost a few, they just started "flagging" and nothing we did could save them. The variation in the survivors suggests that we should try growing from cuttings off the toughest trees, so we look forward to you doing that video. Another pest we saw, and we are in SE QLD too, is the leaf cutter bee, they cut out almost perfect circles from the leaves with surgical precision. Fortunately they distribute their harvesting over all of the plants in an area and the damage was tolerable. With regard to the waste pulp, in the middle east they dry it and make a tea from it.

I have roasted a small number of whole berries from the original plant, their taste was very promising, but it will be a few years before we see a crop of the ones the kids planted. We are "over" seeing a few of them die like that and are now focused on the idea of cloning via cuttings from the best performers from the survivors. A lesson in natural and unnatural selection for the kids. :-)

The generally start to flower towards the end of winter/start of spring for us Arlene. As for pruning, they can take a light prune but must admit I haven't touched ours yet. Hope you got a great harvest on the ginger. Am looking at removing most of ours from the beds down the back very soon. Happy growing.

Was able to go to sleep just fine after de seeding them. I think there is a small amount of caffeine in there Robin but not as much as the bean. I'm surprised I didn't find more folks using them as well in my searches as they are tasty. Hope all's going well with your summer patch.

You know a lot about growing coffee…my interest is on the peel of the coffee pod not the bean itself…after all here in California we have access to the best coffees of the planet at such low prices….now back to the peel when I was a kid we would buy it by the pound and make the best tasting tea brew supposedly the peel has more caffeine than the coffee itself….it is said around the place where I was born that the best coffee is grown in the same place cocca plants are grown…like Colombia, Bolivia, Peru and so on….my hope is that I can grow coffee and be able to taste the coffee peel one more time…

Our friends that we gave this plant to found that fermenting the flesh off the berries then sowing them gave them the best germination rates if that helps at all Alma.

I would love to grow coffee but I’m in 6b zone and as we’ve talk I’m a backyard grower like you. Though most probably wouldn’t classify it as much of a yard. LOL It works or I make it work anyway. Hahaha I would have to drag it in and out for sure and space in my condo is also at a premium. Needless to say...no coffee tree for me. BOO! LOL 😆 I did watch, well rewatch, a couple of your self watering grow bag videos last night. I’m going to start some potatoes in some large grow bags I have and needed a refresher on the waterer. I was going to run today and get the stuff I need to build it but we’re getting some nasty storms today so it’ll wait till tomorrow. ((ALWAYS “TOMORROW” WHEN IM EXCITED 😜 LOL)) I did get some new grow beds for this year and am going to build another one “tomorrow”

Hey Neighbour. We're lucky in that we don't get frosts here due to fences & the shed in the neighbours yard. Do you have a sheltered position near a tall solid fence where you could plant them out David?

I'm on a rural 2.5 acre block, it's open and gets frost every year. I'll try the shelter of our roundabout. It's about 15m2 surrounded by a hedge of Lilly Pilly about 2m tall. Thanks for the reply. Learning a lot from your posts. Hope to catch up for a chat in person one day. Cheers

You would need to get fresh seeds WTAP. Apparently they don't have a great germination rate if kept in storage too long. It might be easier to buy a seedling in tube stock like we did from an online retailer.

How easy is it to sprout coffee seeds? I’ll have to throw some in the system soon! Definitely try hops in your aquaponics system! I’m haveing great success even in texas where the sun doesnt quite hit them right like it does in oregon or hallertau germany...

I haven't tried any myself AGW but have seen others have great success from seeds that were less than a year old. Will be saving a few of these to try out after the reno's are done here. I have a mate that brews on the north side that had a few plants growing in his system before he remodelled it. I think his dogs kept "dismantling" the bucket section he had the hops in while he was at work. Cheers & happy growing mate.

I planted an Arabica plant in my raised bed around 6 months ago. Was fairly root bound in the pot, and approximately 1 metre tall. It's not doing so well, as its leaves are yellowing and dropping. I've given it plenty of water and top dress with compost and npk. Could the lack of growth and leaves dropping be due to it being root bound, or is there something that I'm not doing?

What Climate are you in Aden? Is the plant in full sun now? Over watering can sometimes cause plants to drop leaves as well.

The jade perch rejected the mature larvae but have been told by a bloke that he harvests them when they're a bit smaller & the jade will take them then. Other species of fish will take them from what I've seen on forums though. Cheers.

My plant is an year old, around 2 feet tall. When can I expect the fruits? my plant had some flowers but they just dried out. I live in India, under tropical conditions.

Ours set flowers in it's second year when it was about the same height as yours but we only got a couple of fruit set. I hope your plant does better next season mate.

Rob, do you have any recommendations for dealing with ants as they are running up and down my coffee bushes. It looks like they are causing the branches to dry out and brown up?

My guess is that they are farming some sort of sap sucker like they are on our bush here digitalhustle. I have seen a few folks get them under control using Borax based DIY ant baiting stations. boraxantkiller.com/step-by-step-instructions/ I think it can be toxic to some animals as be careful if you have cats or dogs as pets. Hope that helps you out some.

My plant got attacked by lace bugs and thrips, and for some reason no more ladybugs come to my balcony after I moved plants there. I used to have a lot of laybugs a couple of moths ago. What do you recommend to get rid of lace bugs? I used garlic solution to kill fruitfly infestation on some of my decorative plants long time ago, you think it will work and wont hurt the tree?

I haven't had to deal with the lace bugs sorry mate. From what I've read horticultural soap or oils might be the go. Neem oil sprays are fairly affective against many plant eating/sucking insects as well if it's available there. Hope that helps some.

@@RobsAquaponics I took a better look and I dont think its lace bugs, it looks like cohinilhas. Im using watered-down alcohol, and the wash down anyone who is left

I find that they generally self regulate William. As long as the structure is loose & has a decent amount of organic matter they don't over hydrate. I have had some beds they ended up with very heavy soils that stayed too wet so added in some perlite in an attempt to loosen it up a bit. Cheers.

I just watched your entire video. Congratulations on your harvest. I'm going to be following you and your advice on harvesting and growing coffee. I'm from Northern California, and I am very slowly growing a coffee plant on my back patio. Have a series of grow lights helping with the photosynthesis process, and I've been using fertilizer meant for fruiting trees a slow-release compound of manure, minerals and the plant seems to be growing a little more rapidly.

You can buy tea camellias as well. Their botanical name is Camellia sinensis & is fairly easy to grow from what I've heard. Is not something I've tried myself. Cheers.

I gave the bush away to some friends. It's also best to use seeds straight from the ripe berries so is probably best to looks for a friend/local with a tree.

I have a coffee plant when should I change the pot it's getting it's 3d set of leafs ?

How large a pot is it in now & will you be growing it in the ground eventually? If you're in a warmer climate you could probably get away with popping it into the pot you want to grow it in now. That way you won't be stressing it out every time you go up a size. If you're in a cooler area & need to bring it indoors, it might pay to move it up in pot sizes gradually so it's easier to work with. Cheers.

I've tried some myself years ago Gilda but wasn't that impressed. Might of been because it was from a packet. I can imagine freshly dried root would probably taste better. Cheers. ☕☕

It was gifted to some friends with acreage. Last I saw it was still doing well and they had started a number of seedlings from beans they've collected.

Rob Bob: I plan to grow arabica in a container at my house in Zone 10 Gulf Coast-Florida USA. However, what can I expect (in coffee quantity) when harvesting 2 plants? Also, can the plants be a little more in the Sun than usual?

Hi Louis. I wish I could give you a decent answer but as this was out one & only harvest so far I'm not sure mate. This plant is also a dwarf variety so won't grow anywhere near as tall as the commercial varieties. This seasons crop (the plants 2nd) is looking to be a lot larger than this one so am hoping to get more than enough to share with visitors. The plants can tolerate the sun but need to be slowly acclimatised so as to not shock them. You'll see many plantains in South America grown in full sun. 👍 Sorry I'm not much help there Mate but hope yours grow well for you.

What soil mix is best? I heard regular potting mix is not good for them. What do you use?

They do best in a lightly acidic soil Janine. Other than that, just make sure that it's rich in organic matter & free draining. Fairly mush the same as most veggies folks would grow in their yard. Cheers & happy growing.
